SOBB 2011

Morrie Williams - 24-12-2010 at 01:33 PM

There was some talk about shortening SOBB for 2011. Are the dates Sept 3 - 11 or something else?

jellis - 24-12-2010 at 02:28 PM

Labor Day is Sept 5. and SOBB will start Sept 3rd and run through Sept 11th. That gives everyone a chance to enjoy the event if their schedules make it impossible to attend the first part of the event. The attendance is greater at the beginning and by mid week there are the core group that finishes the event leaving Sept 11th.
Once again we will have pot luck dinners all throughout the event, Buggy Camp, and hopefully a beach cook out as well. Lots of fun at SOBB with lots of new gear to try from any shop that wants to demo their gear. I am sure Richardo will get us racing or a group ride down to the Airedale shipwreck.
Duck farts will be available.

ripsessionkites - 24-12-2010 at 11:52 PM

i missed this year due to work, however the previous year was great doing trips to the shipwreck.

i've marked this on the calendar and we normally attend the beginning half. canadian long weekend.

kiteboyza - 25-3-2011 at 06:39 AM

looking at this one with Macboy, any more info?

Bladerunner - 25-3-2011 at 06:53 AM

Sobb is a lot of fun and the Oregon coast is a MUST visit ! Your Spouses shouldn't mind coming along. Tons of history , scenery and shopping to keep them happy.

You can stay in everything from a hotel to campground + dry camp at buggy / party town .

macboy - 25-3-2011 at 11:38 AM

There's a smattering of stuff at sobb.us as well. NABX or not, I've got the wife's head nod on SOBB solo. We'll see if we can convince RevPaul and deezPanshes to roll out with us. Maybe drag Canuck and Kitedelight out too? Hell, we get PrairieWind out and Alberta will be shaming the BC crew! ; )

(Sorry for the excitement....with no discernible seat sales coming anytime soon and NABX fast approaching I'm finding myself trying to find SOME solace here  )

I'll NEVER forget clipping the Phantom to the back of the RV last year and it just sitting RIGHT where I left it. No bobbing to and fro, swaying one way or another....the wind is SOOOOOO clean there......

ripsessionkites - 20-4-2011 at 12:52 AM

yes, more Kanada at SOBB would be great

arkay - 20-4-2011 at 03:05 PM

I'll bring the hibachi!

csa_deadon - 21-4-2011 at 03:07 AM

arkay, I really don't think it's a good idea to follow the directions given by google maps!

arkay - 21-4-2011 at 07:33 AM

the street is two lanes.. plenty of room!

vwbrian - 5-5-2011 at 05:49 AM

I call the spot on the west side of the tree.

Morrie Williams - 5-5-2011 at 07:42 AM

Are you talking about my camper's spot?

arkay - 5-5-2011 at 02:23 PM

no, his buggy parking spot. It 5ft off the ground

vwbrian - 6-5-2011 at 05:07 AM

Just right next to you Morrie. I will be under the hanging tree.

acartier1981 - 13-5-2011 at 12:11 PM

I gotta find a buggy already..... At least I have my ATB though :-D I'll bring my weber too, can never too much grill space.

sand flea - 13-5-2011 at 06:08 PM

If you bring your weber and your FlySurfers you can be my friend.

I believe you will make a lot of friends.

SOBB was a blast last year, I can hardly wait for this year! YEAH!
Lets talk!

Chris

Morrie Williams - 28-5-2011 at 07:01 AM

no, but i figured you wanted to stay in a hotel than pitch a tent.

option #1 : hotel / motel
option #2 : KOA
option #3 : buggytown / tent

macboy - 30-5-2011 at 07:00 PM

How many tents in Buggytown? Seems the easiest nightly stumble........

kiteboyza - 30-5-2011 at 07:28 PM

I can tent or drag my trailer down :duh:

kiteboyza - 30-5-2011 at 07:50 PM

Is it a full on campsite or rough/wild camping? Doing some sums here :dunno:

macboy - 30-5-2011 at 08:51 PM

We should see if RevPaul and DeezPanshes are even toying with the idea of the trip......Paul? I'm still trying to figure out how I'm gonna bail on the annual "Boys Weekend at the Cabin"....funny how priorities change......

jellis - 30-5-2011 at 09:16 PM

Buggy camp has water and power (110, 30 amp) for campers. Motel 6 is the same price as microtel but bigger rooms and nicer people.
I just got home from the trip after nabx and will work on the itenerary for pot luck times and locations. We also post times to meet at the beach with tides and winds in mind.
Now I will tell you jimmy and I have buggied our ass off the last two days at Sunset Beach. It is going to be a great summer at Sunset Beach.

Buggycamp is the no frills site as far as amenities.
However it is the central meet location after a day at the beach.

Yes it is convenient to stumble back to the tent!
We have toned it down some though. The deer, and the bears were complaining.

We typically cook a communal breakfast each morning.
When there isn't a potluck scheduled we (those at buggycamp) chip in for dinner.

Great group of people on the beach, and back in camp.
If you are on the fence about coming, just do it.
The memories will last forever.

You gonna eat that? :o

csa_deadon - 31-5-2011 at 12:26 AM

Oh did I mention we have a "Hanging Tree" meeting spot also?

Anything to drop a pound or 2...

macboy - 31-5-2011 at 09:59 AM

What are the temps like on the coast that time of year? Up here we're either in a heatwave or we're dodging snow already.

sunset-Jim - 31-5-2011 at 10:08 AM

Typically in the 60's, same as most of the summer. Out heatwave will put us up into the high 70's...lol Too cool for some, but ayeee like it.

canuck - 2-7-2011 at 03:28 PM

I have the vacation time booked off, just have to build up some good behaviour points with my wife. I would really like to get some long runs in on Sunset Beach.

arkay - 3-7-2011 at 09:15 AM

expect mid to hi 60's for the air and mid 50's for the water.

Also, if the wind now is any indication, it should be a good year for wind!

sand flea - 3-7-2011 at 12:52 PM

It was a fantastic day at Sunset yesterday! Yeeehaaawww

Bison, CSA, John and me were making sure the beach is nice and smooth for SOBB,
except where CSA got his truck stuck in the sand!

Thanks again for the great day!
Chris

arkay - 3-7-2011 at 09:27 PM

Wish I could have made it... I was down in Manzo with the family. They wanted to just hang out locally. Got out on he beach for a bit of buggying while the wind was blowing. Shot a great video that I need to post :D Hope you had good wind up there.

ripsessionkites - 4-7-2011 at 01:47 AM

stop typing ... so jealous, only 2 months to go

Morrie Williams - 26-8-2011 at 07:08 PM

Who all's coming to SOBB 2011 and when?

I'll be there 9/2-9/11. Kelci will be there 9/2-9/5 and 9/9-9/11.

Anyone else?????

csa_deadon - 26-8-2011 at 10:04 PM

I just don't know. Do I really want to do this? What the hell, why not! 9/1-9/11

sunset-Jim - 27-8-2011 at 08:59 AM

hmmm, not sure I can make the drive. Any donations for travel cost??? :P

Bladerunner - 27-8-2011 at 09:12 AM

Airin and I may stroll by and see what's going on?
Should we bring kites?

buggeyed - 27-8-2011 at 09:20 AM

Donna and I will be there 9-1 to 9-5,Looking forward to some good riding on the beach.

arkay - 27-8-2011 at 07:10 PM

I'll be there on Saturday... wind has been howling albeit very gusty down south. Today was crazy 8/21/27 was the sort of it today :o Someone do a wind dance!!! or maybe sacrifice a kite...

sunset-Jim - 27-8-2011 at 08:02 PM

It was actually pretty nice here today. Wind was right around 12-15 NW (stuck with only 1 kite for over 3 hrs:) and sections of the beach have improved since last week. Although the entrance is still a challenge. Hopefully the county will do some work on it this week in anticipation of the 3-day holiday.

stetson05 - 27-8-2011 at 10:14 PM

I bet cool breeze has a plow. I hope to be there from 9/2-9/5. I have a truck to help get on the beach but I am sure there will be others. That is if a truck will even make it out onto the beach.

bigkid - 28-8-2011 at 12:32 PM

I will be there the second half. Hope to get Todd there also.

I will be bringing a couple of Flexboardz if anyone cares to try them out, also got some new Kites for anyone to Demo.

sand flea - 28-8-2011 at 06:39 PM

I will be there Sept. 3 and am looking very forward to meeting all of you guys I've chatted with over time, and seeing all my good old friends.
Conditions have been very good, I just got back from 3 days of incredible buggying in Lincoln City and it was nukin like Arkay said. I can hardly wait to get back in the saddle at Sunset with you guys!
Drive safely,

Chris

macboy - 28-8-2011 at 06:43 PM

Bigkid - when's "halfway" for you? Would hate to leave early and miss you and your toys!

bigkid - 28-8-2011 at 07:05 PM

Macboy, I got to see the doc thursday AM, then its Beach bound for the rest of the week.

arkay - 28-8-2011 at 10:07 PM

Today was probably the best buggy day of the summer., 15/20 WNW all day... that is so far... next week will be even better!

stetson05 - 28-8-2011 at 10:09 PM

too bad, I was hoping to try the flexboards out on the beach.

Leojim - 30-8-2011 at 02:36 PM

Two questions on SOBB.

1. There are two nearby windalert wind sensors, Clatsop Spit and Gearhart. Are either any good? Which one best represents Sunset Beach?
2. Is the beach buggyable at high tide assuming bigfoot tires?

arkay - 30-8-2011 at 06:07 PM

1. no good wind alert sensors... if you look at the region "or - coast" you'll see manzanita (paid) which is usually +5-15 of sunset, gerhardt sensor is flakey and reports which junk, then the spit and astoria sensors typically report about +8-10 more. I pretty much assume that if the Astoria sensor is 12-14 then there's plenty of wind to kite.

someone used to have a sunset beach sensor web page but I haven't seen it up in a while.

2. depends on wind direction... the more due west the better. If the wind is north then you're either going for a long downwinder or you are riding from the dunes to the water and back which is ~50yrds.

Leojim - 30-8-2011 at 10:01 PM

Thanks for the info arkay. I guess we'll just wait and see what happens. Gabe (stetson05) and I will be there some time Friday mid afternoon. Not great timing with the tide, but hopefully some good wind on Sat or Sun.

WIllardTheGrey - 31-8-2011 at 01:46 AM

I have a couple of questions concerning buggy camp.
Will there be room the 8th to morning of 12th? Or the afternoon of the 11th if we need to be out by then.
Dogs? Is my people/dog/kid/cat loving, separation anxiety pron brindle welcome or do I need to arrange babysitting.
Suggestions of what to bring for potlucks? I will be bringing a few growlers of the local brew, anything else?

csa_deadon - 31-8-2011 at 06:49 AM

There should be plenty of room to set up camp.

As far as the potlucks go. Bring what ever you want to eat/share.

The dogs. Dogs have been welcomed at camp in the past, we who walk just ask that you pick up after them, and yourself.

You bringing beer! Hehehe.

Drive safe KB!

sunset-Jim - 1-9-2011 at 07:58 AM

WOW, what a difference this past week has made. Some nice high tides and some turbulent seas has smoothed out the beach nicely. The approach is still a bit dicey but even that is better than just a few days ago.

arkay - 1-9-2011 at 08:45 AM

There are some good 1-3ft dunes in the middle of manzanita in some section... it's way fun. none of those up a sunset?

sunset-Jim - 1-9-2011 at 08:53 AM

ya there are, unfortunately with the car traffic though they are among the first areas to soften up and of course rutted.

macboy - 1-9-2011 at 03:12 PM

4:11pm MST. Two hours behind schedule but it doesn't really matter 'cuz I don't cross the border till tomorrow morning. Sleep on the roadside tonight

See y'all tomorrow! HOORAY!!!!

kiteboyza - 1-9-2011 at 03:34 PM

I just made Spokane....customs dont like British passports...they took me apart and my car too....lol...then they pushed each other around in my bugyy....pmsl

Hit Oregon late afternoon early evening Friday:evil:

lamrith - 1-9-2011 at 03:39 PM

drive safe Macboy!

Is there a normal meet/park location once we hit the beach? Turn north and park, turn south and park?

Bladerunner - 1-9-2011 at 07:09 PM

If the beach is good folks should be to the right of the Sunset enterance at the 1st or 2nd poles.
If it is poor access they may be just to the left so you can walk in.

macboy - 2-9-2011 at 05:36 AM

5:30 AM - closing my eyes for a wee nap just outside Abbotsford at the last rest stop before the turnoff to the border at Aldergrove. My little secret beer cabin in Nordegg was terribly understocked with only the mainstream bevvies so I'm PRAYING the duty free has some selection. Don't worry...we WILL have Canadian beer!

arkay - 2-9-2011 at 08:07 AM

lol! :bigok: I'm headed to HR...

macboy - 2-9-2011 at 04:25 PM

.......so really though. What is it that grinds these magnificent freeways to a halt? I'm sitting still enough to fire up the laptop, score some free WiFi off a tour bus and post on PKF!

See you guys soon. On the last stretch, just leaving Issaqua (little detour).

(Okay to be fair, the laptop is open with my maps displayed - I didn't actually have to fire it up  )

kiteboyza - 2-9-2011 at 05:52 PM

just got in, passed through the Gorge and plenty out kiting today

Time for some seafood then find the buggy camp

vwbrian - 2-9-2011 at 06:24 PM

Save my Spot on the west side of the hanging tree next to Morrie.
See Ya All Sunday Morning
Thanks
Brian

lamrith - 2-9-2011 at 06:41 PM

WOW! Should be a great evening to fly/buggy!! seaside is showing 15-20mph out of the NW! Enjoy all!

arkay - 2-9-2011 at 10:24 PM

yup! and the forecast sucked for tomorrow but change to favorable!

lamrith - 3-9-2011 at 06:34 AM

Long as it is ok for sunday!:bigok:

arkay - 3-9-2011 at 08:11 AM

Forecast turned east.. and it'a howling in manzanita, bu that's an off shore wind, and the dune make it pretty swirly on the beach. Looks like we're in for east wind til monday, then it'll be very light wind. Good news is that we can buggy on and E wind, it's just not ideal. It's blowing about 15/20 here on the beach which means that up at kite level the wind is probably 25. And an sunset there's one flat water spot I know of, which is really only good on an east wind... which is usually winter, however it might be crowded today because I know a bunch of folks were headed for a downinder.

any on site weather report?

macboy - 3-9-2011 at 10:37 AM

Where'd all the SOBBs go?

On the hunt, caravan is off to the beach - just don't know which.

macboy - 3-9-2011 at 10:39 AM

In case anyone looks here I'm heading as far as I can head out to Fort Stevens Park. Seems the most logical place to start looking. I'll come back here (Mini Mart) to steal the Wifi and see if anyone's reported in.

arkay - 3-9-2011 at 11:01 AM

I'm passing canOn beach... 20m out... Setup between the first and second poles north of the sunset beach entrance

macboy - 3-9-2011 at 11:32 AM

Search & Rescue Thread

arkay - 3-9-2011 at 03:43 PM

High tide.. We're off the beach!

lamrith - 3-9-2011 at 04:29 PM

doh! off the beach! You guys just retreat back to buggy camp till it goes back out, or hang out on beach, but no room to buggy?
