Kite Leash??

NJLandboarder - 2-1-2011 at 01:12 PM

I just got a new kite its Peter Lynn Venom 10m
im new to the whole depower thing will i need a kite leash?

also what are the differences in leashes?

Which is the best for me?

Thank you

Feyd - 2-1-2011 at 01:28 PM

What bar are you using with it? A PL bar or something else? The way that kite flags out in an emergency relies on the use of a leash or some way of keeping attached to either one front or one back line.

You definately should have a leash on that thing. Different leashes have different release methods but all tend to perform thge same function which is absorbing impact when you cut it loose and keeping it under some control while you get sorted out.

Keep in mind that an Arc is considerably different than the open cells you've been using. The worst part about them is launching and landing. With practice it becomes no problem.

Some people use flagging as a method for landing. Some of us do it differently. But you should always have some way to wrangle the kite if you need to let it go. One that doesn't try to kill you or let a kite complete loose and able to hurt someone downwind.

NJLandboarder - 2-1-2011 at 01:47 PM

it has an airush bar i am not sure what model

do you recommended any leashes?

Seanny - 2-1-2011 at 02:52 PM

Yes, a leash is necessary. It allows the kite to flag out, and also keeps it connected to you if you release. Types of leashes include a standard leash, suicide leash, and handlepass leash. DO NOT USE A SUICIDE LEASH! If you don't know what it is, you're not ready for one! A suicide leash allows you to do handlepasses, but if you bail and drop the bar, the kite WILL NOT DEPOWER! It will stay powered, and drag you downwind. This is not recommended for use with an ATB. A handlepass leash is similar to a suicide leash in that it will allow you to do handlepasses, but if you drop the bar, the kite will depower.

A standard leash is needed for all depower control systems, and will suit you just fine.

NJLandboarder - 2-1-2011 at 02:59 PM

is this one okay http://powerkiteshop.com/accessories/mauimagichandlepassleas...

Seanny - 2-1-2011 at 09:53 PM

Yep! :) That should do it!

Kamikuza - 2-1-2011 at 10:00 PM

Any modern leash should work ... some of the older ones didn't have a Dyneema line inside - Wipika for example :D but that's ancient history by now! - and would break under load.
Next question will be - where on your harness can you attach it? Either the handle pass line around the back or you'll need a loop & D-ring on your spreader bar ...

Check out eastcoastkitesports.com, ripsessionkiteboarding.com, coastalwindsports.com, dakitez.com, or awindofchange.com. All are great shops with leashes that will work for most if not all control bars that are out there

PHREERIDER - 3-1-2011 at 06:30 AM

it will depower, it won't flag and it will still be flying depowered through the bar. beside flying unhooked the rig is extremely depowered at the trim as well

the leashes are really the same, an extra rotary element lessens the twist both allow depower through the bar, but no flagout.

no , DEPOWER LEASHLESS SYSTEMS HAVE THE FLAG OUT MADE INTO THE LOOP RELEASE AND DO NOT REQUIRE A LEASH. ONLY FOR ATTACHMENT ON UNHOOKED IF SO DESIRED.

LEASH KEEPS YOUR KITE ATTACHED TO YOU SO YOU CAN CONTROL IT. you don't want your junk hitting anyone.

V10 ...front line slide ring attaches to the fixed end of the leash and the release end of the leash attaches to you. leash will pass over or under the bar.

careful. very quick kite in 15+

Not a fan of leashless as any kite that I have flown can come unhooked even with what appears to be an impossibly long donkey dong. Always a surprise to find yourself holding on to a bar un-hooked and fully powered when you are not expecting it. In fact I toss in a free leash with every HQ"Leashless" de-power kite.

PHREERIDER - 3-1-2011 at 09:05 AM

i think the term integrated leash system would have been better. the leash is there just not how we usually see them.

Seanny - 3-1-2011 at 09:56 AM

Maybe I worded it wrong. If you have a depower kite, and you release from it via the CL, a leash will keep you connected to the kite, although the kite will depower/flag out. Unless of course you have a suicide leash. But I don't know much about them.

PHREERIDER - 3-1-2011 at 10:54 AM

with leashless

the chicken loop is both primary and secondary attachment points to you. on some the loop is just a loop, the release mech. has the flag line built in so when you punch out the loop is still attached to you and the kite flags.

it is the same, the attachment point is combined , the secondary has a release further up the flag line if you need to release the kite totally.

for them to work properly a standard leash will foul the system in a suicide setup on the main , they typically have specific unhooked tether spots.

not all chicken loops open and not all leashes attach to you separately.

this needs a new thread with PICS!

Seanny - 3-1-2011 at 02:36 PM

Yeah, I need some pics or examples of leashless systems; I'm not quite sure I understand... I always just used a regular leash, it didn't bother me if I wasn't doing anything too crazy. The simpler, the better.

doneski - 3-1-2011 at 03:06 PM

look in the ARCsetup_FAQ.htm for the section titled "Control Bars - Non Peter Lynn" and for the sections on leashes.

There's a link to the document in the recent "a great resource" posting.

Venoms can handle a huge wind range but to do that you need a lot of depower. Since you don't have a peter lynn bar I'm betting that you don't have a lot of depower in the trim strap. The ARC set up document shows how to make a long throw bar and/or add a clam cleat.

If the wind gets too much for you, pull the chickenloop safety and the kite will float downwind to the ground. If you want to land at the end of a session, walk upwind of where you want the kite to land and pull the safety.

Feyd - 3-1-2011 at 03:21 PM

Setting up that Airush bar with a leash will be super easy.

Just attach the leash to the adjuster ball on the steering line leader.

Works slick with that bar and an Arc.

Work on getting used to riding and building your skills on that kite THEN work on messing with leashless set up and suicide stuff.

Practice flagging it out. Does the line set have a stopper ball on it NJ?

NJLandboarder - 3-1-2011 at 03:31 PM

okay well this alot of information which is exactly what i was looking for and i am 100% sure i will not be using a suicide leash

and im not really sure about a stopper ball or not i am waiting for my kite to arive in the mail

and do i want an emergency release on my leash? i cant really decide on one because i dont want to spend more money then i have to

acampbell - 3-1-2011 at 04:05 PM

don't worry about the stopper ball- it just controls how far you have to walk to get to your bar after you dump the safety. You mount it to the line you are going to flag the kite on and you make sure it is one wingspan or more away from the bar. that way when you dump the kite and the bar flies up the line, the kite is fully flagged when when the bar hits the stopper. And they are like $7-9 but you could likely get something like it at the fishing tackle store for less.

Yeah you gotta have a safety on the leash- it's you last chance to cut-away. Regular good leashes are $43 - $52.

There is a good basic and affordable leash from Peter Lynn meant as a replacement for the Twinskib Bar/ 07 Bar leash and is just $19.

http://www.coastalwindsports.com/servlet/the-572/Peter-Lynn-...

but it does not have a clip for the kite-end because it is larks-headed to the ring on the end of the rear lines near the OS handles. If the Airush does not have such an arrangement, then you have to find a proper clip that will not snag a line, so you might as well go with the regular ones. Like this...

Feyd - 3-1-2011 at 06:33 PM

ac's right NJ. The stopper isn't critical but it's handy. If it has one on the line it has to be as far from your bar as your biggest wing. So since you have a 10m the stopper would be about 15' up the line.

It just makes reseting and relaunch a little easier.

I've set up the Airush bars with a spinning leash and the leash for the PL '07 bar works well for that but I like the HQ leash package than ac showed us. It will be easy to attach to the adjuster ball on the bar and is long enough to spin a few times.

You want a way to cut loose from the leash if things go really bad. Th HQ has that on it already.

This will all make a bit more sense when you get your hands on the bar. You can make a loop (if it isn't still there from when I had it) that you can clip or larks into on the adjuster ball.

ripsessionkites - 3-1-2011 at 06:48 PM

I have a few PL Pro Leashes left. The one that has the passing line for the harness.

doneski - 4-1-2011 at 10:42 AM

Once you get your kite set up you should watch the training DVD. If it didn't come with a DVD there's a copy on Youtube: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2752930869302000363# The quality's not as good as the DVD but it shows how to setup/launch/fly/land the kite. I learned on my own which was a real pain and impossible without the DVD. The DVD shows how a helper can assist you in launching so have friends and your parents look at it to see how they can help you.

NEVER SELL that V10 even if you get discouraged while learning. It'll last forever and give years of fun.

ripsessionkites - 4-1-2011 at 07:09 PM

note to self, make new instruction video for the CH II

Kamikuza - 4-1-2011 at 08:02 PM

Charger2? OMG you are such a stirrer

There is Charger instructional video on the PL page on YouTube ...

Feyd - 5-1-2011 at 06:05 AM

LOL no kidding!

Feyd - 5-1-2011 at 06:11 AM

Btw Doneski is right, hang onto that kite.

And you have a DVD inbound. It should be there today or tomorrow.

PHREERIDER - 5-1-2011 at 06:52 AM

the videos are a great reference.

arcs are really simple and very predictable.

learn the solo, i personally do not like involving anyone for launch or land.

it doubles the possibly for errors AND could get them injured, including yourself .

experienced help is nice but rare. even kiters i've kited with for years are clueless as how to approach arcs.

i think the assisted launch takes much more skill on BOTH ENDS.

go solo and demonstrate absolute control of your junk. start to finish

your safety comes from practiced reflex development. EVERYONE's safety around you is your obligation and responsibility. getting help sometimes can cripple your learning.

oh yeah that V10 ..a champion unit, that thing rocks a monster in 30.

van - 5-1-2011 at 07:48 AM

Seems like alot of information but could be information overload. I hope NJLandboarder is not confused by the different type of leash. All of them are just a rope with a clip on each end. The type of leash is defined by how you attach it. A suicide leash is just shorter so you can hook it on your chicken loop or chicken loop ring. If you hook it onto a flag out ring, then it's no longer a suicide leash. Just buy a leash that has the right length and has the type of quick release that you like. I like the push away type release on my leash like on the Cabrinha leash because it seems more intuitive. Whatever you do , just don't buy the type that doesn't have a release ( clips on both end with no release)

Feyd - 5-1-2011 at 03:15 PM

I second Phree's last post. I'm a strong believer in being completely self reliant when kiting. There isn't always going to be someone there to hold your hand and if there is and they aren't familiar then it's not any better than landing or launching solo.

Follow the instructions in the vid and you'll be in good shape.

NJLandboarder - 6-1-2011 at 03:55 PM

okay well can somone pick a leash for me? because i dont know what im doing

This is what I personally use. Nice bright RED release. Easy to grab and push away. Hope this helps you make your decision.
