I've got the G9, it's not specifically designed for water, but the pads are removable to dry so I don't think it would hurt it. Probably rinse it
when you're done if it isn't in fresh water. I guess it depends on how often you want to use it on water, if it's more than occasionally I'd get a
water specific helmet.
It's a great helmet though, adjustable for an exact fit, and it's one of the few I've been able to find that comfortable fits my rather gigantic head.
It has removable insulation (not padding) for different seasons.

I've got a ProTec bucket but doesn't have a strap for the goggles for skiing ... and I have to wear a beanie with it which means the helmet perches on
top of my head 
I can actually buy some kind of Giro here at a ski shop - hence
the question.
Why not all the time, do you say?

I guess the only reason for "not all the time" is you need to take the padding out to dry, and while it's quick to remove, it takes a little time to
get it back in correctly, it would just be a pain to have to do that every time you use it in the water. And air drying the padding takes a while,
unless you throw it in the dryer like I do.

Hey one more question about the G9 ... re. fitting.
Tried them on at the local ski shop ... the M fit snug like I like helmets to fit, the L was loose. But if I needed to wear a beanie, the M would be
too small I reckon so - do you need a beanie if skiing in a G9 etc?

only on super cold days. I rarely wear anything under the helmet, so I wouldn't size it based on that. Unless you can try on a large, and tighten it
up to where it's comfortable.

I thought the rule was if a beanie fit under the helmet it's too big....?
(this does not apply to Bern helmets and their attached beanie)
And you shouldn't need a beanie in any winter-spec helmet, they should already be plenty warm.

in giro ATB helmets, I wear a med. in Giro Ski, a large. Strange.
First time you've been a M instead of a XL in a bit? So proud.

So aside from having to dry out the helmet, is there any real reason not to use a land helmet on water??? Can it absorb to much water and make it too
heavy?? Does a water helmet add to buoyancy while floating around??? Wanting a GoPro for the summer, if I can get away from it, I'll just use my
snowboard helmet.

Dunno, if the polystyrene foam stuff is treated it may be ok ... would it absorb water at all?
I hummed and harred in front of the shelves last night ... they didn't have a colour I liked in my size - M - so I passed fuggin' prices here! US$200 for the Omen or Y40,000 which NOW is about US$500 ...!!!
