ASSATEAGUE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE VA/MD

I found this place while looking on google earth, they allow OSV (OVER SAND VEHICLES).So I'm thinkin a kitebuggy would be no problem. Here's my Question... Should I contact them first or just go do it? I have always been one Who would rather "beg forgiveness" than "ask permission".

Todd ,what do you know about the MD side of it?

Here is a link http://www.nps.gov/asis/planyourvisit/osv.htm

Donnie I know they are very protective there. But I guess only two ways to find out. Ask or do.

If you are responsible enough to find the osv comment, then you are justified to proceed with a ride. Check for contradictory signs when you get there.

I go to Assateague on the VA side (from Chincoteague) during the summer and was told I could not use my buggy on the main beach, the ORV section is usually closed when I go. I can fly static on the beach, but no buggy. The ranger was a kiteboarder and very nice about it. Although, this was during mid summer and her concern was about other beach goers (understandable), I didn't get a chance to ask if it would be alright during the off season though, so you might have a shot. I know the ORV section does get shut down for shore bird protection at various times. I don't know about the MD side.

Thanks Rian , it's worth calling em' and inquiring about the off season.

When I spoke with a Ranger on the MD side about 2 years ago they said no due to a bad situation with another rider. Seems a kite apparently spooked a horse :smug: I was going to let it sit for a while and approach them again with the idea of a trash removal day. Give each rider a bag take a pass on the beach picking up trash and removing it. Put gear away and call it a day hoping the good deed would not be forgotton. Sort of build a relation before hand with them.

Also I HIGHLY recommend that we not discuss this in a open forumn, thats how we lost a sod farm
