I had one during a "pass the dirtsurfer" several years ago. My son got the hang of it real quick but I was never smooth on the starts. Once up and riding, its awesome. The faster you go, the easier and more fluid the ride. Again, the most difficult part is just getting rolling with it. Depower kites with steady constant winds would really help so you can depend on being able to lean back against the kite. These things would be a blast on the dry lakebed, where you could get going and just go for miles without lots of transitions. And transitions would be smooth with room to ride and speed.

Thanks for the info beamerbob thats what i was hoping to hear about the kite aspect of it. I will have to check out the unbalanced starts you were talking about i played with it in my backyard and i see what you mean by unstable until you get rolling.

I bought a used one about a year ago. My first starts were leaning against a railing and pushing myself along. After about 10mins, I decided to try self starting and did pretty good. Riding switch stance was a little harder but I picked up that pretty well.
When I tried it with a kite, the starts like BB mentioned, were a little difficult but once you get going, I really liked it.
You'll need a lot of room for these bad boys because you can get going really fast and quickly burn up room. Get good with your switch stance so you can transition back instead of having to stop and turn the board around.
Have fun....let us know how you like it.

Yep run out of room. Fast 20 sec ride = 5 min walk back. Ride down walk back, ride down walk back. The dirt surfer works great really stable the faster you go the easier it is to ride. I did the same thing lunchbox started from a park bench until i could self start. spent hours having fun yesterday and it seemed like minutes. I would halucinate if you were to go down wind with a kite it might take 2 days to walk back. Cant wait to try it with a kite but i have to find a place with enough room, and a cross wind.

I'm trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on one ... should be rocking for the Kitewing too. Mmm ...

Ya im thinking of the kitewing as well, the person i bought the dirtsurfer from has a kitewing he bought to use with it. I can pick it up for half price its still new in the box its a 5m
which seems a little big when looking at it. but i think it would work well since the dirtsurfer favors higher speeds.
