csa_deadon - 11-3-2011 at 01:14 AM

And now the National Weather Service has issued a Tsunami Watch for the Coast of South Washington extending down to the Central Oregon Coast. They are expecting the wave to hit at 07:15 local. (if there is one at all). Guess there is a chance of me getting wet.

Kami hope all is well and you and your family are safe tonight

WIllardTheGrey - 11-3-2011 at 02:23 AM

Hope you and yours are ok Kami:shocked2:.

Checking my bug out bag now.
Thanks CSA I had my NOAA radio turned off.

Praying for you and your family Kami...

csa_deadon - 11-3-2011 at 04:43 AM

City Police here just came by the hospital where I work. They say it's crazy!!! Only one 24hr gas station in town. Now granted they have 8 pumps. They only have one cashier, and one person pumping gas, (no you can not pump your own in Oregon) They Road out of town is bumper to bumper.

Glad they hospital sits up high. Told the other nurses that in the morning I'm gonna grab a cup of Dutch Bros Coffee and watch the wave from the light house (sits about 100' above the beach)

Kamikuza - 11-3-2011 at 05:09 AM

Thanks all!

We're fine - we're about 700km away from the mess up north and well inland ... and 100m above sea level. Did feel it though - I suddenly felt like I was really drunk or stoned or something ... weird feeling, weird quake!

This should centered on where we are - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Japan,+Shi...
Zoom out and look north east for Sendai where the tsunami have made a mess.

Fingers crossed for the rest of the Pacific Basin :o

shehatesmyhobbies - 11-3-2011 at 05:15 AM

Glad you are well!

indigo_wolf - 11-3-2011 at 05:16 AM

Was getting a little worried to see all the posts but no reply. Glad to hear you are alright.

ATB,
Sam

rocfighter - 11-3-2011 at 05:17 AM

Glad to hear your all ok Kami. I hope the west coast and Hawii are spared as well. Very scarey stuff.

acampbell - 11-3-2011 at 05:17 AM

Set to Hit Hawaii in just under 1 hour. maybe 2 meters there. 3 hours west coast US mainland.
Glad to hear you are OK, Kami. What a mess.

nocando - 11-3-2011 at 05:22 AM

Hey CSA the footage I saw of the Tsunami coming in with foam in middle and lovely lefts and rights was pretty wicked with others lining up.

no tubes that I could see.

Surfs would have been chomping at the bit.

tridude - 11-3-2011 at 05:26 AM

glad to hear you and the family are well..................................

Kamikuza - 11-3-2011 at 05:30 AM

Sorry, have been glued to the TV :)

rocfighter - 11-3-2011 at 05:40 AM

The trouble with surfing a tsunami wave is all the debri. (just saying) Best to stay as far away as possible. I hope the estimates are overkill.

labrat - 11-3-2011 at 05:43 AM

Kami - glad you were out of harms way

To all in the Pacific: Praying for those affected and that few more will be...

WELDNGOD - 11-3-2011 at 06:28 AM

:thumbup:glad you and yours are safe Bro'

Bladerunner - 11-3-2011 at 07:36 AM

WOW, I started to worry for a minute. Felt I had a brother over there.

Glad you touched in with your PKF Family Kami !

:bigok:

tactix - 11-3-2011 at 07:44 AM

Glad to hear you're well Kami!!!!!!

Kamikuza - 11-3-2011 at 08:17 AM

Seems the tsunami was real localized - everywhere else seems to have gotten off with nothing but a mountain of hyperbole and paranoia from CNN ... seriously, WTF is with blowing it all out of proportion?

Seanny - 11-3-2011 at 08:36 AM

I'm no expert, but is it seriously necessary to evacuate California...

Kamikuza - 11-3-2011 at 08:37 AM

Short answer - nope (probably)

Seanny - 11-3-2011 at 08:42 AM

I heard something on TV about 8 ft. waves. Big deal. Everyone's in a panic about Hawaii also.

BeamerBob - 11-3-2011 at 08:44 AM

Crescent City Oregon is at high risk because of the shape of its shoreline. It will tend to focus the wave energy into a concentrated area. They are calling for a 3 foot wall of water to hit the west coast soon. I'm sure live cams will show all as it happens. However significant or insignificant.

I think an 8' tsunami is much different than an 8' wave. instead of breaker, think sea level suddenly rising by 8'

Seanny - 11-3-2011 at 08:52 AM

That's a very good way to look at it. It's more of a wall than a wave. I can see how that would cause a good bit of damage, especially depending on the geography of the affected areas... Still doubtful about the scale of the evacuation, though.

csa_deadon - 11-3-2011 at 10:59 AM

Tide elevated maybe 6-10 inches here in Newport. Still no "All Clear". Probably won't hear that till closer to 11:00 am PST. The Coastal Towns here on the Oregon coast take this thing rather serious. Fire Depts were out in areas with no Tsunami sirens waking people up at 4am this morning alerting them. I would rather have people overly prepared then not at all.

Was still kind of fun watching the lines at the gas stations this morning, and watching the Wal-mart parking lot turn in to a RV park. 100's of motor homes!

Kami, again glad to hear you and yours are ok.

stetson05 - 11-3-2011 at 12:44 PM

Vacationing in Seaside. First day off and still got woken up at 0400. I am with CSA on this though. Better to be woken up by an alarm than a wall of water busting through the glass. Turned out to be a non-event here in Seaside. The tsunami almost made it to the high tide line from last night. Would have made a good boogie boarding wave. It was weird to watch the ocean go out waiting for a big one to come in. One guy was just standing there for a while. Once the water went out so far he got the idea and left the beach lately. Weird feeling to be standing at the top of a resort waiting for the big wave/surge to come in like the news has shown in the past. I am happy to report that everything looks good in Seaside. Now to do some buggying!!

TRP - 11-3-2011 at 01:01 PM

Santa Cruz Harbor took a bit of a beating because of the shape of the harbor inlet. Several boats broke free. Nothing I'd consider *major* damage. I think I've seen worse damage from a thunderstorm. Crescent City took a hard set. Their harbor lost a wood on most docks. Again, nothing major. Still no all clear.

The Nuclear reactor in Japan has issued an emergency over the core overheating and the cooling rod system failed to deploy. That could get real interesting.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan.

erratic winds - 11-3-2011 at 01:40 PM

Hoping for continued "OK" ness after that last massive aftershock.

Best hopes for the entire country.

Seanny - 11-3-2011 at 02:03 PM

Albatross Mark, how are things Hawaii side??

TRP - 11-3-2011 at 04:58 PM

So, to report back about Santa Cruz

The surges got much worse after I reported earlier. The damage grew to about 40 boats, mostly small craft destroyed or sunk.

One complete doc pretty much imploded under the pressure from the water entering the harbor. Santa Cruz harbor usually has very calm water. Sometimes it's hard to detect movement in the water. At the height of some of the surges, it would go from 'high tide' to the lowest of low tides the locals had ever seen, in a span of 10 minutes.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/mediaManager/?controllerName=ima...

Pretty impressive.

Again - this is all just a minor scrape compared to the devastation in Japan.

SlasherQuan - 11-3-2011 at 05:18 PM

Good to hear your alright Kami....hope they can get power back to the reactors soon, so they don't go three mile island on everybody

Kamikuza - 11-3-2011 at 06:34 PM

Thanks all!

Don't think of a tsunami as a wave, the peak of which passes and is gone, but think of it as a fricken' freight train ploughing head-first into the beach and it just doesn't stop, all that mass behind the engine just keeps driving it forwards.

The chaos is very localized here, that one spot in Sendai is messed up ...

Kamikuza - 11-3-2011 at 06:35 PM

I think Mark is on holiday in the US - he asked me to send the Syn19 to Fort Bragg ...

Seanny - 11-3-2011 at 06:59 PM

There is unspeakable devastation in Japan. My dad's company's main fabricator is in the heart of Sendai, and he's good friends with many of the people who work there. My heart goes out to them. The footage is incredible... Obama made a pretty lame speech about all of this, but I sincerely hope the government of the United States uses any resources available to aid the people of Japan. This isn't Pakistan, it's our closest ally. From what I can see, it looks like the Navy is doing a great job of providing relief there. Keep it up!

WIllardTheGrey - 11-3-2011 at 11:31 PM

Very glad to hear your OK Kami :singing: now just don't start glowing.

I owe a big thank you to this forum. We ended up getting evacuated at 3:30 this morning but because I checked PKF we were ready to go. Turned what could have been a panicked rush into "Ok the cops are outside, lets go." We stayed in the Bi-mart parking lot (one of the assembly areas) BSing on the CB radio until we finely got the all-clear to return to our house at about 11:00.

On a side note Florence also only has one 24HR gas station, the vampires decided to raise gas to $5 a gallon until the next station opened up at 7:00. Needless to say I'm going to remember that next time they are 2 cents cheaper.

csa_deadon - 12-3-2011 at 12:11 AM

Willard, turn them in to the Oregon AG. Price gouging during an Emergency is ILLEGAL! in Oregon. They will get nailed with criminal charges, and possibly with civil suits. If you know of anyone who bought gas there and paid with a debit/credit card there's your proof!

Kamikuza - 12-3-2011 at 05:00 AM

Yeah, the nuclear genie is making my sphincter twitch but we should be good - offshore breezes predicted for a while yet ... oh watch out Seattle :o

And now for the lolz ... Auntie Janet who I haven't seen or heard from in like 25 years - I don't even know her last name - got a reporter to track me down on Facebook

Funny, I don't there are any holidays at Fort Bragg. I hope he isn't going to try to use it to jump out of a plane.

Glad you are ok over there!

canuck - 12-3-2011 at 11:20 AM

Glad you are OK Kami. Hope those power plant reactors cool down and there are no radiation leaks.

Kamikuza - 12-3-2011 at 05:55 PM

Mark does as Mark pleases

Taper123 - 12-3-2011 at 07:23 PM

If seanny really wanted to know the power of a 'wave.... look at crystal beach during hurricane Ike. It was not the wind that cleared the land on the Texas coast... but the waves.

Taper123 - 12-3-2011 at 07:26 PM

... not that a hundred mile s inland a hurricand affected me any.... You do not have to be at ground zero to have your world turned upside down.. but if you do, it sucks.

Kamikuza - 12-3-2011 at 07:30 PM

I'm beginning to think that the old name of 'tidal wave' that fell out of disuse when I was a kid is more appropriate than tsunami - strong wave ... say the tsunami is 1m tall - that's not a wave of 1m tall that passes like on the beach but it's more like the tide rising by 1m ...
The 'wave' that hit Sendai coast up there was 10m ... so a 10m rise in tide and the weight of the ocean behind it, pushing it over the land. Fcuk me.

Taper123 - 12-3-2011 at 07:35 PM

Exactly!

Taper123 - 12-3-2011 at 07:40 PM

Hurricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis suck when they affect you personally. I say this from personal experience on at least one of the three.

Taper123 - 12-3-2011 at 08:05 PM

Seanny, look what a couple meter wave did to the town of Crystal Beach , Tx. It was not he hurricane force winds.. but the water that did the bulk of the damage. Water is like a bulldozer...... there is no stopping it.

I wonder why they do it. News... media... I guess there is a reason for it...

Taper123 - 12-3-2011 at 08:47 PM

Hurricame Rita caused huge unwarranted grid lock to Houston...yet to the residents of Holly Beach Luoiisanna.... Devastation is sure to occur. If you get advanced notice, count yourself lucky.... even if it is off by a few hundred miles. natural disaststers suck... but if your in a area and get a notice... it's better to to take notice than get slammed. i live a hundred miles inland and had my house cut in pieces by a huricane. A tsunami would do even more damage. I feel for these people. Natural disasters suck.

Money - people will tune in if they're scared.

rocfighter - 13-3-2011 at 05:04 AM

Fear runs our news companies and our government. We are afraid of anything they tell us to be afraid of. Oil shortages, Earthquakes, floods, other countries, We are all created equal unless you look or sound differant than us. It's all Bull #@%$#!. Lend a hand, be a friend, overcome fear. It's our world to barrow. Lets do it right.

Cheddarhead - 14-3-2011 at 10:50 AM

I second that Roc, gas prices come to mind every time I'm at the pump. Unfortunately Fear and speculation rule the oil prices rather than reality.

Kamikuza - 14-3-2011 at 05:52 PM

Speculation only, I think ...
"Someone in the middle east was sad today - oil prices jump $10 a barrel to cheer him up"

NJLandboarder - 16-3-2011 at 04:23 PM

i guess im a little late
but tonight i was sitting eating dinner watching tv and all the things on the news and i was telling my parents about the Japanese exchange student and her family then i shouted (mentally) KAMI!! i also remember hearing on NPR talk about shiga japan and i kept thinking why does that sound soo familiar and i just couldnt think of it but now i know why i kept thinking about why i recognized it

anyways i hope everything is all right with you and your family.... and your kites

Kamikuza - 16-3-2011 at 06:15 PM

Better late than never  just ... don't believe everything you see on CNN :o
