I really only had the one early in the 360 and kite got behind and powered up for a nice toss - got off lucky. Then maybe you are thinking of when Ziggy came into the pit area and kites were all close and I tripped backwards over a bugggy?
Anyway - just in the door - saturday was a good day - got light later afternoon and then a really nice evening wind but we were already packed getting ready for the airport - hit 92.4 kmh with a synergy 8 mid afternoon when most people had stopped and a nice trough of wind down the middle of the playa that I got some sweet little runs. Earlier there were some big power gusts coming through as the race was on and one time in the pits when a few of us had to scramble to land a couple of the Dutch team that were caught with big Chargers up as big gusts rolled through.
....more little updates later, waiting to hear who won the prizes at the raffle last night after we left.

Lots of the usual days + winds. Our group found Freeman mid-out and back in trouble and dehydrated. Poppeye and Buggeyed turned around and came in with him. He rang his bell good but recovered without any injury. (I had already bailed )

Record heat combined with kiting so many days in a row got the best of me. Time to start acting my age and ride a buggy more next year !

Beat B'Bob again this year ( in a buggy ! .......... Job DONE !!! :tumble:

I'm afraid this will my last year to Beat Bob. He now has an Apexx + Poppeye buggy for Wex' to push Him!:cool2:

and I told him a couple of small things to up the speed on his synergy for next time, Wexler is definitely coming on strong out there riding a lot. Had a great time riding with the other arcusers out there. I might even have to switch some of my dusty playa dedicated twinskins over to some of those new purple and blue ones I was trying out :-)

Funny I can still hear my lines whistling their happy speed tune when I shut my eyes

YES you got me again. I can only blame my loss on kite selection. Last year, I went out with kites too big, and this year my kites lots of times were too small. With months to practice on the playa, me listening to advice like Mark gave me, along with what should become proper kite selection every time out, maybe next year I can take the crown from you Blade! And yes, with Wexler having one of the nicest buggies in the world now, I'm sure he will be pushing me to stay on top at least at my own house.

markite - 4-4-2011 at 09:11 AM

Always hard to gauge what size kite to use out there because you never know how extreme the variance is between gusts and average windspeed or lulls during mid day.
It's getting a feel for lot's of small things on how the kite reacts, where it sits in the window, what the tips look like if they are too tight getting power but not speed etc.

I was a size down from you with the Synergy and then when I was running the Scorpion I was down a size from what Ken (Bladerunner) was using and could accelerate faster when fully powered with the thinner lines etc.

(also noted to correct my spelling for Wexler)

Bladerunner - 4-4-2011 at 10:02 AM

It was fun being played with out there Mark ! I think I could / should have had you take a look at that new 10m I was running. It offers that slowed down character I wanted but with the 15 I can simply dive and pull in the bar for a major speed boost. Just like you had with the Scorpian? I left it as sent. All loose, I think? I run the 15 with a bit of tension on the back strap?

I KNOW it has a LOT to do with Markites abilaty but he wiped my butt with a 9m " purple kite " when I was on the 10m Syn as well!

Even I can hear those singing lines still! :singing:

Once Bob gets on the playa regularly, you all are going to have a tough time keeping up with him. It's not just about kite size but also about knowing where the rivers of wind flow through - which he will learn the more he gets out there. :)

BeamerBob - 4-4-2011 at 01:00 PM

Thanks Kent. That home field advantage is something I'll cherish to gain over time. I did notice a river of more intense wind on Saturday. I had fun dropping into it for the rush. I wish the one I found had another mile before the power lines. When I'd feel the kite pulling hard, I could see them up ahead and it kept me from completely putting the hammer down. As my skills and confidence grow, I'll not be so worried I'm sure.

Also, I must say I really enjoyed having a buggy as nice and steady as the Ivanpah this year. Never once did any fears or nervousness I had come from feeling insecure in the buggy. My new limitation was my kite skills and learning what a real buggy is capable of. I never lifted a wheel and was rock steady every mile. I took a ribbed barrow tire on the front of the buggy down to the fabric in about 70 miles of riding so you know that spells fun and excitement. Thanks Kent.
