Should I buy a Hobie?

I've been buggying for almost 4 years now and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I also LOVE to landsail. I have 2 Blokarts that come out on high wind gusty days when I'm too chicken to kite.

So...I've always wanted a Hobie and I'm on the fence. I camp at a nearby lake alot and can beach the thing up to the camp site. The kids would have a blast with it. I found a great deal on a nice Hobie 16, I won't need to sell any gear to get it, and it gets my kids off the couch.

This is all my justifying rhetoric you see...

Is wanting a Hobie because my buggying and landsailing turned out to be a gateway drug for sailing? I feel kind of dirty... Sort of like I'm cheating on my other toys...

(I can quit whenever I want....:ticking: )

Do I need some kind of wind powered sports intervention?

Im crying out here....

Get the Hobie, they're great boats and great fun. Sure there's better boats out there, but if the price is right, you can't beat the ease of use of a Hobie. When you're ready to go nutz, drop the mast and instead of sails use a Venom 19 (or larger). Just don't tell your wife that's part of your plan...

A friend of mine has a Hobie Island adv enture kayak with the sail and outriggers. When I was in SoCal a few weeks ago we took it for a sail from Marian Del Rey to Santa Monica Pier. Goodtimes!

I've heard rumor that the maintenance on a Hobie is quite a bit more user friendly too. The sailing club up here just bought a new Hobie Wave for me to play with this summer (yes....they bought it just for ME......hehehhe)

I'm totally looking forward to sailing this summer. I think it'll actually be an instant way to get my couch-ridden dad off his duff and back sailing - he's had his boat wrapped up in storage for over ten years.

Go for any fast cat. Get trapezes and let the kids join in the fun. You can't kill a Hobie and they're wicked fast.

Having gone from 7 boats to 5 , I can tell you it is'nt easy to say no but if the price is right and you can get at least one kid to hang with you its pretty easy to say yes.

That's what I'm talking about. Since moving here I've been offered 3 boats for free. Unfortunately none of them have been small cats / hobies. But if someone were to offer one of them, I'd have a real hard time saying no.

Chris the biggest reason you need for this is that it will get you and the kids out on the water together having fun. Life vests and sun screen Bro. You guys will have a blast.

My wife thinks its purely selfish. but I see the kids sitting on the couch or texting. They dont have crap for life experience yet at 13 & 15. We did so much more with our free time 30 years ago.

Heading to Wilmington, NC Thursday to pick it up. Camping at the lake this weekend so if its ready and I get my gear on time (PFD's & Harnesses) were gonna play with it.

Hey Phree, I looked at some Prindles too but the used ones seem to hold their value alot more than the Hobies. I didnt find too many in my price range. They do look sweet though. Read good things about them. Im just excited to fly a hull again. Its been years since I played with one.

Prindles are great boats, much more performance oriented IMO, but a Hobie 16 is a classic do anything go anywhere boat. If you've never sailed a cat before, be sure to at least watch a few videos before taking it out. There are some tricks to launching and tacking that you'll want to know about that will save you hours of embarrassment.

PS - If that picture is of pokitetrash's boat, tell him his jib is over-trimmed. :P

That's the one's I'm buying, the seller sent me the pictures. I've done some sailing years ago, including a Hobie, but it was only the main sail so I def have some learning. I've been watching vids like crazy. Thats how I taught myself to buggy. You Tube Vids and CWS tutorials.

bigkahuna, any advice would be welcome. Feel free to U2U me if you feel like getting hammered with dumb questions...

Oops, sorry pokitetrash.

Advice? Watch some videos to get the concept on how to tack and beach launch the boat (that's what most people seem to have problems with). Wear vests and bring a paddle. Don't come back until you've had fun.

check for soft spots forward of the pylons...can be expensive to fix. we just sold our h16 a couple months ago. it was a good boat but my least favorite of the cats. my G Cat 15 was the best. with the front tramp, i could step the mast by myself, the big hulls made it a semi dry ride. my 18sq meter was the most fun. flying the hull on that thing got me higher than a h18 with wings. man i love cats! my son says that cat sailing at 10 was the best thing i ever did for him.
