on a 4 line power kite what are the brakes for and how do you use them?

The "brakes" are the lines that are attached to the bottom of the handles and also attached to the trailing edge leaders from your kite. The "brakes" when applied heavily will help to power down your kite to help you land the kite easier . When applied a little on one line or the other, the brakes can help you turn faster.

That being said, to apply the brakes in a way to assist with landing, just point the top of you handles at the kite, this will push the bottom of your handles toward your body applying the brakes to make your kite drop from the sky.

To use the brakes to assist with turns just apply a little brake to the handle in which you want the kite to go. So if you are flying the kite to the left and want to redirect to the right, just leave the left handle at power, and use the bottom fingers on your right hand to push on the bottom of the handle to add tension to the right brake lead. This will help make the kite turn a little faster. It would be so much easier if someone was right there to help describe or show you. Very hard to type it out!
Found this little video, shows a little at the end about using the brakes to land the kite.

adding a little bit of brake tension at speed gives you a little boost too.

Not too much... By applying a small pressure because I have a disc breaks at front and rare tires so it is really effective for my bike.
