*Video* The Devil Went Down to Georgia...I went to Southwick!

bobalooie57 - 13-6-2011 at 12:09 AM

So I spent my Sunday at Southwick Beach. The water is higher/beach narrower than I've ever seen it! Wind was SW at 15ish, I used the 2.4M NPW5 as it is on 30' or so lines. The upwind slog (to the South) was like work, with lots of corrections to keep the kite out of the trees. Not a lot of people out with the mid-60's temps, so at least I didn't have to dodge them as well, on the narrow beach. Here's some vid (dedicated to those who didn't get to ride today)of the fun!

Very nice BOB. I went out to Hamonasset yesterday but the wind had a high of about 5mph. I did some static flying and the 4.0 and 5.5 almost pulled me!! I'm glad you got to ride. Looks like you had a fun time.
How long are the lines on that? They look about 10 yards at most.

Good job Bob keep up the good work!

What the hell? Polar ice melt? Record rain fall? Shifting tides? That really narrowed the beach. So who has right of way now , the buggies or the naked sunbathers.

bobalooie57 - 13-6-2011 at 06:49 AM

Thanks, guys. Yeah, Dave, that kite is on about 30 foot lines. I did try the 4.8M for a while, which is on 45' lines, and was able to get upwind somewhat easier, but the sidepull on that kite in those winds is very strong, and the downwind speed was a little too fast to avoid the driftwood scattered all over, making for a very bumpy, scary ride, with the kite really close to the trees!

Oh, when I got there, there was a guy out on the lake with a 15M Wainman. Here's a pic.

:o I will never complain about my "narrow" (80ft) beach again.:wow: Well done!

rocfighter - 14-6-2011 at 04:05 AM

SS I think I would defanetly stop for the right naked sunbather!
Last summer we took one of the grandkids with us kyaking in Vermont. We were triing to point out the otters playing in the water but the 3yr old was way more interested in the sun bathers and saying " hey they gots no cloths on"!!

bobalooie57 - 14-6-2011 at 08:51 AM

That beach is usually at least twice as wide as that. I can normally stand at waters edge with onshore wind, and hot launch with 20M lines, and the kite would still be on sand. If I tried that Sunday, I would have been standing in waist deep water! I think, roc, that you would try to fly by most of the sunbathers without stopping, or even slowing down :o ...I'll tell you about it sometime!

PHREERIDER - 14-6-2011 at 12:25 PM

tight spot! all the stakes and trees wow, you're getting all of that spot for sure

popeyethewelder - 14-6-2011 at 12:45 PM

At least you got on with it and made the best out of the situation you faced when you arrived...well done

bobalooie57 - 16-6-2011 at 09:59 AM

Sat. 6/18 is looking pretty good for Southwick with winds predicted around 10mph from the west, sunny with temps in the mid 70's.

snowspider - 16-6-2011 at 06:41 PM

Spider I hope your Mom isn't a member here. If so you just ruined the suprise!!

snowspider - 17-6-2011 at 08:01 AM

Wet suit check , rain suit check , west wind I'm there. Tried to u2u , possible operator error issue.

snowspider - 20-6-2011 at 08:17 AM

I was there Sat. morning , beautiful smooth south west winds. Not quite the direction I needed and I believe the beach is even narrower now. I dont think I could have turned arround without being in the grass on the dunes. Used the time to change some lines and handles arround. Got the Panch flying much better see report in "kite review"

bobalooie57 - 20-6-2011 at 08:32 AM

How early? I got there around 11:00, and the wind was maybe 7-10 from the SW. I tried a few feeble runs with the 7M NPW on the short lines, but ended up flying it mostly static all afternoon. Had fun, anyway! Sorry I missed you. Derek, from Syr. was there again with his 15M Wainman, but didn't get it launched in the light wind.

snowspider - 20-6-2011 at 09:36 AM

Pulled out right at 10:30 left a bunch of short scudd marks on the swim beach at the waters edge. When the water warms up we can try my board with my 7m sling shot or your 11m neo , even without the beach you cant beat that location for lake winds.
