19m Charger! HOOOOJ!

Drewculous - 20-6-2011 at 09:28 AM

Just unwrapped a new to me charger 19! W00t!

any tips or tricks for tuning this kite? Sould I use extensions? General behavior I should expect?

To summarize: this is now a charger info thread

flyguy0101 - 20-6-2011 at 10:26 AM

Drew-
So jealous- i am going to be ordering one soon as well- did you get the nav bar also? And the Girl question- What color did you get?

Scott

flyjump - 20-6-2011 at 10:28 AM

put the vpc to the bottom knot for most direct/fast steering....straps all loose. fly on at least one extension...and the dutch say use two extensions to get more power....shes a sweet wing

its gonna be more direct and lifty when you send it hard...you will get the most incredible hangtime from this kite!

ripsessionkites - 20-6-2011 at 11:06 AM

lose the pink skirt

Drewculous - 20-6-2011 at 11:29 AM

:dunno:

Ol scotty has the skirt rip!

Yes on nav bar, its green :singing:

Plus... Hard to have a skirt on a 19m..... :smug:

PHREERIDER - 20-6-2011 at 11:57 AM

i liked all the arcs at about 27m.

with out the extension it will be a little quicker, the ext. add to the power stroke and slow things down a fraction.

use them.

Drewculous - 20-6-2011 at 04:26 PM

@ 1:47 it says tighten straps for quicker turning, more power.....

Adam, this is what i was talking about.... but anyway, if the dutchies sayeth, i will obey

Kamikuza - 20-6-2011 at 05:22 PM

Tightening the wing tip straps will cause tip clap and issues ... apparently. All straps loose, then IMHO tighten the center strap for more power. I think many people have had problems with launches too so don't a bucket of patience to the launch site with you, just in case ...

Seriously, if the 15 turns like a 12 Syn then the 19 is going to be fast too - and you don't need any more steering input

Mine's red, btw. I got a green 15 though.

I forget - what are the OEM line lengths with the Nav bar?

BeamerBob - 20-6-2011 at 06:01 PM

Drew, you and your kite and then watching that video, have me wanting one of those 19s for my very own. The need for it is way down the priority list as well. I'll restock the quiver for water duty this winter and a 19 will be right up there with getting a board again.

flyjump - 20-6-2011 at 06:16 PM

Drew those guys are on water so they need more grunt plus they can edge harder. Remember you are on a Hard surface. You'll be flying that kite higher in the window compared to the water guys. Ask Feyd, pepijn designed the charger to fly with straps all loose. Krug back me up on this. He works directly with the designer

Drewculous - 20-6-2011 at 06:24 PM

lol, i'll take your word, you yoda, me luke.... just letting you know where i got it... i just want to go fly!

Drewculous - 20-6-2011 at 08:21 PM

meh, super super light winds, but i gave it a shot................. Ohhhhhhhhh, my god..............

that kite is SO much faster than the phantom, even in no nothing winds, its nimble as hell

the only issue i had, was that the kite pulled to the right pretty badly... i wouldve ran my lines over to see if they were even, but it was getting dark and the Apocalypse came in the form of 10k mosquitoes! so i packed up asap! but id let it try to auto, and it would pull to the right.... maybe it was the lack of wind?

The other thing i noticed was the kite didnt seem to inflate all the way... kinda looked wrinkly up in the air... if it can take off, i gotta believe it can intake air... inflate on the ground was good, filled up nicely, seemed to hold the air well, took off easily... but never looked fully puffed in the sky.

hmmmm need daylight to work it all out

but wow that kite is fun

mougl - 20-6-2011 at 09:02 PM

Congrats bro!!!

Sounds like you are going to need a new ATB

Kamikuza - 20-6-2011 at 09:39 PM

Yeah I've noticed that too, Drew ... the LE looks like it isn't all fluffed out nicely. May just be our paranoia though
I found the Synergy's to have iffy auto-zenith too - they TENDED to A.Z. but drifted a lot and seemed sensitive to turbulence eg. the side with the trees was where they wobbled over to ...

acampbell - 21-6-2011 at 04:23 AM

Yeah none of the Chargers will auto zenith quite like other arcs. They tend to stay active and wander a bit. As stated loose straps all around will calm it down. I've not had trouble with inflation or launching but find that over sheeting on the trim strap (too tight) can result in tip clap (saw that with the new HQ Matrixx too, FWIW). I've heard others say that underinflation on launch can cause this but I have not sorted that from the sheeting issue.

Drewculous - 21-6-2011 at 06:24 AM

I really think my issues were mainly due to the low wind... It was like 5-8 gusting to 0 lol!

But I feel like something was set funny that was making it pull right... Ill check my lines and vpc more closely today in the daylight... Wont be flying today, winds are forecasted 28 gusting to 58.... Lmao, Nebraska, wow!

ripsessionkites - 21-6-2011 at 08:32 AM

Keep in mind that different tuning is for different applications. What works for water may feel different for when you're on land. De Dutch plus Adam (mr. #3) have theirs set for max boost flyboarding. Follow their advice.

Drewculous - 21-6-2011 at 10:31 AM

Any guess what my top end should be for now on this bad boy... Im thinking 15 - 20ish (im 225 lbs)

flyjump - 21-6-2011 at 10:54 AM

Drew in good clean wind you could take it up to 23 I bet. That would be in you were using a sea breeze. I had a session on mine today and had it up to 23mph. FLOATY jumps :D

Drewculous - 21-6-2011 at 11:07 AM

U at home, or on the road?

flyjump - 21-6-2011 at 11:18 AM

I'm at my home field today. I hope it's windy 4th of julyweekend. I'm going to my parents in IL and my favorite inland field is there

Feyd - 21-6-2011 at 05:20 PM

I dunno if it's too late but I'm with Adam. I've always prefered the straps loose and while discussing it with Pep he agreed that all loose is the best setting to get the most out of the Arc. He also stated that the kite is designed around flying in it's "stock" state without the adjustment of shoulder and back straps.

The straps are good for enhancing certain qualities of the kite for sure. But while you enhance some you will deminish other qualities. For the gusty inland winds we fly in all loose has been the best way for us to fly.

The 19m is a great kite. I don't fly mine often enough but when I do I'm always astounded by how much damn fun it is.

Kamikuza - 21-6-2011 at 05:27 PM

Angus, you mean trimmer is pulled in is bad? You think launching fully sheeted in is better?

I put the 15 up in mad winds (cos I used to be able to with the Syn 15!) and on launch it went CLAP-CLAP-zooooom ... wind was probably 25 knots - the others were on 7m kites :o so I'm sure it was full enough
Other times, it's come up, clapped a bunch and done other mad things and then by a combination of pulling on the front lines or the bar, it's finally gotten into the air. Black magic I reckon :o

your two questions mean opposite things but I mean the same. In this context, sheeting in means trimmer pulled in too much and in this case not a good thing. Launching sheeted in - with the center trimmer pulled tight - caused tip clap. Sheeting out - letting the center strap out - improved things and reduced tip clap.

Kamikuza - 21-6-2011 at 08:38 PM

Yes, I'm asking if you think one condition is bad and the opposite is good
Pulling the trimmer in shortens the front lines which is the same as sheeting the bar out ...? My convention is to use "trim in" to mean pulling the trim strap and "sheeting" to refer to the bar action ... and straps are the things inside the kite  we need to align our jargon :)

So, trimmed out for smooth launch. Bar in too?

So forget this sheet for now. Trim strap out more, depending on wind, and yeah pull the bar in as needed.

PHREERIDER - 22-6-2011 at 06:05 AM

the straps inside the kite all loose. to tighten things up you need more breeze and smooth CONTINOUS movement(kite and YOU). kite is stall prone when it is light air and tightened up.

all loose gives more range esp. on lower end. and will accelerate faster=power.

"grunt" at low wing speed (but in higher wind ) is the point where tighten the center strap comes in. like in 20+ for water. This situation on landboard just isn't going to arrive ....unless you're pulling a plow.

the most relative point for a good quick responsive kite is the front length and main line trim. if anything trim to depower the kite. there will be a point where depower turns are quick and snappy and plenty of power in the window.

and KK on the launch "bar in all the way " with a little pull/pump on the main thats it. around 10seconds to really fill nicely , any turns prior to complete fill it will collapse

Drewculous - 22-6-2011 at 03:38 PM

man, this is such a different arc... Could not park this guy at all... Above at the zenith, loft.... To either side, overfly, luff, power up downwind, and slide or loft... Tried figure 8ing at the zenith... Lol up I go!

My only explanation is too much wind / too many/strong gusts... Ive just never had an arc luff that bad... Hmmm looking for some more clean winds I guess

It is super floaty tho!

:::edit:::
Finally got some gust numbers (internet sux)
Wind is 11 gusting to 30mph

"well there's your problem right there"

Kite is still a winner, my wind just sux

Feyd - 23-6-2011 at 04:57 AM

Won't auto zenith for beans if the wind is punchy. At least not to the point where you can anchor it and go eat a sandwich.

I don't trim when I launch, I just give a tug to the center lines and up she goes.

Yeah that 19m gets some wicked float.

Kamikuza - 23-6-2011 at 05:02 AM

Thanks Phree and Angus! Will try again :)
