Really, honestly, neither. I would not be buying a 3m kite to jump with. You'll manage little hops but if you take em out in enough wind to really jump you will stand a good chance of being injured. I have the 3m Hornet which I think is a very, very good powerkite and I believe the twister is even better. Buy it, learn how to handle it, learn to fly it blindfolded. THEN buy a jumping kite - a big kite in light to moderate winds will be much more suited to that than a small (3-4m) kite in higher winds.

Read and take heed of some of the recent threads where people have been injured with small kites - there are a few. When you do try to jump, don't try it in gusty winds. Onshore seabreeze and a nice big sand dune will be safest. Good footware and helmet are highly recommended.

My 3m kites have an enormous amount of pull compared to my prism snapshot 2 line foil.

Don't be trying to learn how to jump on a 3m kite !

Don't ever expect to be able to float out a jump on a 3m . Unless you are very skilled and it is very windy you will drop hard. Nobody thinks of a 3m kite and jumping if they know what they are doing.

Practice going through the motions of a PROPER PENDULAM jump on your rainbow. ( that means not standing in one place ! ) Including redirecting. Set those reflexes in such a way you can do it without looking at the kite.

If jumping is your goal and you have put enough time in on the rainbow then you should buy a proper sized kite for jumping. That means more than 5m . I like the 5.6 Twister II as a choice. Respect the heck out of this kite and it will take you where you want to go. Make a foolhardy choice and it will make you pay but you will grow into it. Obviously a 5.6 is going to be much slower and more powerful so you must start learning all over + avoid strong winds at 1st.

Search " pendulam jump " on this site + others to get the proper method and work on it ! Keep Saving and learning !

this video was my insperation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sNGaiaA-Mg&feature=feedf

Your heros need HELMETS!

That is not a 3m kite , very windy, a perfect bluff and that fellow has learned how to properly redirect BEFORE he jumped!

Good inspiration though.

Any jumping requires a 5m or bigger BUT before that I would suggest a getting a 3m to learn with if flying is new to you

You could get away with just the 5m but choose your wind carefully when learning

KYTE SLINGER - 25-6-2011 at 07:51 AM

yup! in the video that's more like a 10m.

Ross:

the sensations of "power" in smaller kite is from speed..
speed of the kite moving through the middle of the wind window.. nothing at the beginning ..... then power, then not much to nothing exiting out the other side

all too quickly... this happen when you try to use a small wing for more like a jerk...than jumping

as bladerunner stated ...pratice and pratice some more.. save your hard earned money for the right kite to jump with or you'll just end up hurt and/or you'll just be saving up again for the kite you should have bought in the first place

check in the for sale section LOT'S of great deals

and keep us posted on your progress..

That guy is really good he has other videos that are much better
Learn to fly the crap out of that three meter and then go bigger
Personally a five and jumping is still not enough for me to jump safely but I am a big guy if your kite is not big enough when you go to jump the redirect won't help much and you will drop just as fast as u went up I have had a couple of sprained ankles because the winds were strong so I decided to jump with my 5m kite and I got air but during the redirect I was just dropped out of the sky but when jumping riding or flying in high wind I wear a dot approved brain bucket it bears battle scars and I can think of several times I was glad to have it on

itl most likley be the peter lynn hornet 3m sick of silly 2 liners whick are border line impossible to relaunch ive had days when i spend more time on the ground resetting the kite than flying

When my son wanted to start jumping I had him go through many of the posts and how to's and all the nice xray pics on the forum and then I started him on a 5m Crossfire II. Before I handed him this kite he had a lot of flying time on my other smaller 4 lines to get the flying skills. I still wish he would read more on the forum and watch the DVD's I bought him instead of just checking out a 2 minute youtube video that has no instruction and the people in it are not wearing safety gear. When we go out to fly I think my toughest fight is getting him to put it all on. When he jumps or is on his ATB with the crossfire or an arc he has helmet, pads, knee pads and upper body armor. He's not to happy that dad makes him put it all on but some day he may be happy I did.

One other kite you might want to consider is the peter lynn 2.6m Viper S. This kite is a blast to fly and it will really train your reflexes. Or the 3.8m if your a person on the large side. This kite is also perfectly fine to learn 4 line on.

You contradict yourself again!

If you have gotten so good at flying the rainbow you are bored then why are you crashing it all the time ?

The message has been sent to you in a few ways. Small kites are needed for learning. Big kites for jumping and the 2 don't mix.

I am not trying to discourage you from jumping just trying to make sure you understand how to do it right BEFORE you do it.

rossb63 - 25-6-2011 at 11:39 AM

oh sorry i should have sprcified when i crash its not because i cant fly its because the wind suddenly drops and the thing just collapses then crashes then i have to run over re set then the process repeats its self

Bladerunner - 25-6-2011 at 06:20 PM

Knowing how to fly means knowing the right location and how to fly in those winds. If this is the case then you have a bad location. Flying a different kite isn't going to fix that.

You either still need to learn a lot about flying or choosing your spot?

It all takes time !
