Power Kite Forum

A very lucky guy.

I let my wife plan the vacation this year. I was sure we were off to California again. Don't get me wrong I love it out there but this would have been 4 years in a row and we always go to the same spot.

This year she surprised me with this list of things we are going to do at the other ocean.....

Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Horton House ruins, the Wanderer Exhibit, Tidelands Nature Center with a guided kayak tour to name a few. Yes, she announced we are going to Brunswick, GA and Jekyll Island. Woop Woop..... I about crapped my pants when she told me.

Should I tell her there may be a bit of kite flying in the area????

Should I tell her I am packing kites or sneak them with??? Bring my buggy???

What will it be like to fly in clean coastal wind instead of these ballistic gusty inland winds of Wisconsin?

Should I contact Angus for a quick buggy lesson and where to fly while there????

How much trouble will I get into if I turn this into a kiting vacation?????

Hmmmmm........ to many questions........

Call Angus. Bring kites. Sea turtle center is awesome, an the friendly laid back attitude in that area is amazing! Scenery is almost zen like. Prepare to fall in love.

Your a lucky man- when are you going to be there? and Definetly bring some kites and talk with angus.

g00fba11 - 28-6-2011 at 06:50 AM

We are going to arrive in Brunswick on July 24th and leaving on the 29th to go spend a couple of days up in the Smokey mountains before heading home.

So hoping to meet Angus and anyone else that is in the area. I am hoping to fly in the evenings when we get back from taking care of my wife's itinerary and site seeing. Don't want to rock the boat but if I am there I got to fly.

If you see a big maroon denali.... no it's not beamerbob..... we just happen to drive the exact same vehicle..... except mine will have Wisconsin plates on it......

Will have some kites, my son's ATB and if it fits, my radbuggy....unless my wife says no.....

check tides! sunday high tide is around 3:30-4pm. this advances an hour a day for the week.

not so great but mid tide rides will be doable. once high tide starts to push back you can get on when room/crowds permits . sunday like 6, monday 7, tuesday 8, ..then go early afternoon BEFORE hightide if wind is up on WED, thurs. fri.

thats for riding , ...plenty of space to fly a kite during high tides for sure, some high tide spots get tight so for launch you could get wet.

enjoy

Thanks for the heads up PHREE.... So are early morning rides better for crowds and tides????

Cheddarhead - 28-6-2011 at 10:15 AM

That sounds fantastic Goof! Your a lucky guy. I think my wife really needs to meet yours, if you know what I mean. Ever since we went to the "wings on strings" event in Oshkosh she's been overly interested in the Rev's. I think theres hope for her yet. Have fun down there, your gonna be in kiting paradise.

PHREERIDER - 28-6-2011 at 11:10 AM

early mornings rides ? no wind! i have logged zero morning rides

sunrise wind shuts off ...well except for hurricanes

predawn rides yes ...typically the earliest daytime is 1-2pm if you got any breeze its usually just HOT and still.

wind comes up 3-4pm

goofball, check out driftwood beach while you are there, its an awesome place to take the family and walk around exploring. riding out there is awesome, just watch out for beach spectators...there's a lot of them there. i'm jealous you are gonna be there lol

As you head down the lane to the picnic/parking area that leads to Wanderer exibit you will find a path on the right that leads over an old dune into the woods. As you crest the top of the dune with trees all around , you will gaze out upon the longest highest rope swing I have ever seen. We found it while looking for the "wander around the swamp " exibit , I was following my little guys interpretation of what he thought the exibit was , lucky us!

Pack the kites. All you gotta do is contact the tourism centres in these spots to send you some "literature" At the same time have Angus send you some "literature" that you can slip into the mix and say "Wow honey, look at this! I had no idea! Wait a second....did you plan this? Awww....sweetie.........come here so I can give you a little smooch."

I've been sworn off lessons for future travels (she found out how much it costs and did the math on how many lessons I've had). Luckily she didn't veto kiting....and I'm about done with lessons other than for gear rental purposes.

g00fba11 - 28-6-2011 at 02:16 PM

So where does the rope swing drop you? nice big pond? river? close enough to the ocean???? or just a really big swing??? I know my boys will be in for that one...... I think I will bring the GPS and mark our favorite spots.....

Driftwood beach sounds cool..... My wife and kids love to hike...... My arc flying will give the spectators a good chuckle when I lay out one of my superman moves or head off to the drag races....... I probably should leave the arcs in the car..... I don't quite have those things down yet..... trying to learn those in the on again off again swirly gusty crap we have had so far this spring has been interesting to say the least. One minute they are falling out of the sky.... next minute they jelly fishing....... and then flag 'er fast before that gust takes you to the drag races.....

when you fly my field you will ask what direction is the wind coming from? north, east, south, or west. My answer will be yes.

I won't know what to do in clean wind...... I will just stand there in awe.....

I am just so pumped to get these old bones out there and give it a go.

As for the crowds.... I will have my teenager take off his shoes upwind of everyone. That should clear things out pretty quick......

flyguy0101 - 28-6-2011 at 07:09 PM

Goof. Bring the arcs in the clean wind you will be amazed how easy they are to fly. I think I am going to be heading down there as well but looks like arriving on the Friday you are leaving :( but to give you a better idea about the arcs my 11yr old 90lb son will mostly likely be flying his 10m vortex. He flew it at jibe for a little while in 10-12 mph winds no problem. They really are gently giants until you get them moving

I plan on stuffing all the kiting gear I can get a way with in with the luggage. The foils will pack down nicely and probably share pack space with the arcs. I think if I bring an 8m VII, 10m Scorpion, 13m Scorpion and 15m Synergy I should have things covers as far as the arcs go. Foils will be 2, 2.8, 3, 3.8, 4, 5.5, and 6.8 hopefully out of this bunch I will have something that will get me going. Don't know if I will have the 10.8 RII by vacation time.

snowspider - 29-6-2011 at 07:24 AM

The rope swing cuts an arc thru a hollow in the dunes and you better hang on for dear life 'cause it surely depends on it. There is no dropping off into water; if you cant hang on you will go skidding across the forest floor. This one requires years of foolishness or HOOJ kahoonas. My 11 year old and I were able to do it from the base of the tree but chose not to climb the tree to a higher launch point that would take us near horizontal to where the rope attaches to the tree.

g00fba11 - 29-6-2011 at 07:41 PM

That sounds like a blast...... I know my boys will be up for the low level take off....... Definitely gotta get an extra battery and SDHC card for the GoPro before we leave...... That swing sounds like awesome video material......

tridude - 29-6-2011 at 08:47 PM

Ill shoot you my cell and can try to make it down there but I may be back to work by then...........am winds are rare in these parts as Phree mentioned........afternoon sea breezes are almost automatic.....ask LostFox he found this out Monday here in Charleston..........
