Saturday 5AM departure to Jekyll Island

g00fba11 - 22-7-2011 at 02:11 PM

Just thought I would throw out a last minute shout and get some feedback on my abbreviated quiver for the trip.

Those that have flown Jekyll what is your opinion on the following?

2.8 and 3.8m Reactor II's, 5m Crossfire II, 6.8m Viper, 10m Venom, 13m Venom II?

I will have my rad buggy with and my 15 year old will have his GI Flight.

My 2 young ones will have a couple of Pansh Flux 2m.

I can't believe I was able to get the wife's Okee Dokee on this much stuff.

I am so pumped to get to some clean coastal winds for the 1st time. It will be like learning to fly all over again.

Thanks in advance for your opinions...../advice

Sounds like a decent quiver to take. When I was there for JIBE, I only used my 18 phanny and a 5.6 viper. Not sure what the winds are like right now, I am sure Angus or Phree may be able to speak of that better. If I am not mistaken I think Scott AKA flyguy will also be down there with his son Andrew this weekend. Great couple of Dudes to hang with. Totally enjoy yourselves and be safe!

quiv looks good.................if you have a lightwind engine take that as well.................if not ACampbell would prob let you fly one of his lightwind demos....................tides are bass ackwards this weeklend but will improve throughout the week.....................how long are you staying and have you contacted Angus.....................

g00fba11 - 22-7-2011 at 03:23 PM

I will be down for a week. Scott had already pinged me but we are going to miss. I don't have a bar yet for my 19m Venom and I don't know about trying it on my 53cm bar otherwise I would sneak that one in also. I am planning on picking up my low wind foil from beamerbob when I get back from vacation. Was going to grab it before but my wife put the brakes on that one until we return.

Angus told me to give him a call when I got into town. We will see what unfolds. If there is no wind, hopefully there will be some beer. I will have to find out what his schedule looks like.

Tridude how is your status? I know you had said you might consider dropping down.... anyway shoot me your contact and maybe we can meet on the way through or back.

Drewculous - 22-7-2011 at 03:29 PM

g00fba11 - 22-7-2011 at 04:00 PM

I will sneak one in the car..... That would be cool. I haven't flown one of these yet.

tridude - 22-7-2011 at 04:33 PM

plenty to see and do on JI...................Sea Turtle Center is a must do...........................enjoy and I hope I can make a day trip...................

g00fba11 - 22-7-2011 at 04:39 PM

very nice................each afternoob the winds kick in around 1/2ish..............forecast on ikitesurf looks fairly decent and will update and improve.........

nice water park on the island, mini golf, bike rentals.............so much to do so little time.............

g00fba11 - 22-7-2011 at 05:58 PM

No doubt about that. The basic itinerary my wife put together is:

Monday: Timucaun Ecological and Historic Park in Florida....
Tuesday: Cumberland National Seashore
Wednesday: Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Center and Kiting
Thursday: More Jekyll Island Touring and Kiting
Friday: Finish off a couple of hours locally and head to Asheville, NC to spend a couple days in the Smokey Mts before heading home.

I have to find the post with the directions to the rope swing.......

As always the vacation will be way to short......

shehatesmyhobbies - 22-7-2011 at 07:24 PM

Just watch out for the deer! They are everywhere! You will definitely have a great time! Might see some Coyotes if you do any night time travel. Saw two on our way home from JI!

g00fba11 - 22-7-2011 at 08:06 PM

Coming around the corner tonight after a last second Walmart run I almost took out a doe and her 2 fawns...... Looks like I won't get a break from the deer down there either.......

I made sure we are all carrying a camera this trip. So hopefully one of us will come up with some great wildlife shots......

+ 1, check the tides! generally no breeze till peak heat at 3pm. last week was nice every evening . hightide is moving into the late afternoon , usually weak air with that combo here. there can be some breeze but no beach.

next weekend? with FLY-n-son and TRI right? def want to make it to JI, ... Asheville festival same weekend! actually sch'd to go ...but things can change.

flyguy0101 - 23-7-2011 at 05:28 PM

Phree Andrew and I will be arriving Friday around 2 if drive goes well and plan to kite then and every afternoon til Wednesday. I am really hoping you and don make it. I know angus will be joining some as well. But I want to be selfish and pick your brain and skills to learn some more.

Just completed 785 miles from home to Clarksville,TN.

Hope to arrive in Brunswick around 4 or 5pm local time.

Also hoping to get an education on these arcs I recently got myself into. It will be great to watch some experts fly and hopefully get some pointers.

Gotta get out to eat and back to get sack time for tomorrows drive.

I was supposed to be throwing sod next Saturday but I'm starting to think I should go flying at Jekyll instead. It's been toooo long.

Like Rich said, watch out for coyotes. I took one out on my way back from JI. Got tooth marks in my bumper to show for it.

Phree,
Totally understand. Time with the bride is always a great time. If you are able, maybe Tuesday if your back.

Goof, sorry for the hijack. Look forward to hearing your thrills at Jekyll

Phil, kiting sure beats laying sod

Purse.... we are hitting Asheville on the way out..... have a great time.... hope to finally get that cult phannyin the air......

flyguy0101 - 24-7-2011 at 06:38 PM

Goof kite beach is where the fins restaurant is. Park in that parking lot cross boardwalk bty the restaurant and you are there. Angus mentioned to me if facing ocean go towards the left. You will see the wind gauge by that lot. Have fun. "purse". Gotta love the auto spell check

g00fba11 - 24-7-2011 at 07:44 PM

Hey Scott, Well, We must have been close to the right spot.... saw some buggy tracks. Went over the big suspension bridge and took the left into the park. Went in through the gate after paying the parking fee. Went straight to the T in the road. road closed to the left for construction so we went right and pulled into the first lot. Don't know how close we were to the "right" spot.

We were able to get the 6.8m Viper airborne this evening and my oldest boy "Chips" and me had some fun. Got some video and will shoot it up soon.

Off to Florida tomorrow AM. Hopefully get back in time to find Fins and the wind gauge.
