Wow, first Earthquake experience!

shehatesmyhobbies - 23-8-2011 at 12:42 PM

While some of you are familiar with earthquakes. Being from the East Coast, I am not familiar with them at all. I have lived in the same town my entire 40 years on the planet. I have never experienced anything quite like it.

Today (about an hour ago) there was a 5.9 earthquake in Virginia, about 100 miles or so from me. I was sitting on the couch and felt it start to shake. Being from DE, I looked for the Xbox controller to make sure the batteries were not warning me they were about to die. Then the entire house started shaking, walls shifting around, lamps shaking pretty violent, kids running to me trying to figure out what was going on. We all headed for the front door.

Being from a little town, and on the East Coast where we just don't usually get any trembles we can feel, it was quite an experience. The house shook for about a minute, (40 seconds of it we were on the outside looking in). Now I can say I have felt the power of the Earth moving below me. It was an experience I will never forget, nor will my wife and kids!

Wow! The end is nigh! :wee: I'm like Burt Reynolds in Deliverance. I can't wait for Armageddon, I have the bow and arrows and everything. NO MORE WORK! :wee:

Of course I'll have to defend myself from man rape, but that's just a consequence of having good looks and desperation on their part....and maybe mine.

I had a small earthquake experience, on lake Malawi, East Africa. Not as exciting as yours but enough to wake me up and go outside. My mate slept through it. His loss. Hark at me in Africa. lol

You should break a few things and then claim on your house insurance. :D

Same here Rich,

That's the first one I could actually feel. (My father, who has lived in this area all of his life, said the same thing.)
It rattled the windows and I could see the walls moving in and out. That's when I started moving toward the door.

I'm glad it was just an interesting experiance.

All i can say is that was wierd- was sitting in my office and ,y desk and computer screens started shaking. Definitely a new experience and not one i want to feel again anytime soon. Lasted about 30-40 seconds here, and we are about 80 miles from the epicenter- i guess the blue ridge mountains mellowed it out some on our side:D. Sounds like all is okay now- have a great rest of the day

I was on a nuclear aircraft carrier in drydock. It shook the heck out of it like it was a toy. Really creepy to feel it move on land!

Movies to cue up on Netflix/Hulu

No evidence of the day's events up in NE, and the early warning staff spent most of the day lounging in front of windows, fans, and watching the branchs on the trees swaying.

Hope no one had anything worse than a few disconcerting moments.

Sam

That's weird because we had a 5.7 last night about 11:30 in Southern Colorado and it was the first time in 40 years!

Eventually, but hopefully we'll all have a chance to run through a fountain in a crowded mall and walk with Mickey in the Disney parade, first.

I was on the 6th floor of the GSA building in downtown DC when it struck. I was actually sitting in a conference room reading when the first tremor came through. I stopped reading, stood up and walked over to my office to see what was going on, then the real thing came through. To be honest I stood just inside a door way, like an idiot holding the door open. The floor bucks, the cabinets slid around, some of the cubicle walls fell over, some ceiling tiles fell down, and lots of stuff shook. Not really a big deal.

I grew up in California and I've seen a few earthquakes in my time. I felt the 1989 quake, but was far enough from the epicenter that it didn't really feel like much. I do not really remember being scared, more confused. "This isn't supposed to happen here..." My wife on the other hand, freaked out pretty good. The cats didnt really appreciate it either.

The actual quake itself wasn't all that bad. Trying to get home afterwards was the real nightmare. Traffic was locked up and the metro trains were packed like sardine cans. Not fun.

Hope everyone came through that okay. Sounds like it. :)

My comment to my wife last night on the phone... "The world is coming to an end, but not today... ;)"

A 5.8 really isnt that big...
The one in 89 was much larger...

i got such a huge adrenaline rush from it and my rush didnt go ahay for atleast 30 minutes
it was awesome

Drewculous - 24-8-2011 at 10:20 AM

Glad everyone is ok... Always kinda wanted to feel that kind of power... Lol... Id rather keep my house and life tho!

shehatesmyhobbies - 24-8-2011 at 02:42 PM

Yeah it wasn't real bad, but for being the first time experiencing it, was a shocker for sure! Kids know what to expect now and we also cleared things up on what to do next time it happens if it happens! Always nice to get a wake up call and discuss what to do in an emergency!

Yup, that's a fact....the only way to avoid it is not be born!! Looks like that's to late for all of us!

The weird thing about the quake is how wide spread it was. Actually a massive quake of a smaller magnitude.

My understanding is it came from a major fault on the east coast.....if I recall, it's the Bush Fault. ;-):o
