cheezycheese - 25-8-2011 at 11:03 PM

You're a freaking nut !!! What size foils are those/brand ?

macboy - 25-8-2011 at 11:06 PM

Looked as Ozone orange as Ozone orange can be, no?

Me kinda want......

This summer the family and I stayed at a great little camp site near Golden BC. Lo and behold it was the landing zone for these guys:
Atitude Adventures

She even said to me "You should do that."

.......me kinda really want now.

You felt totally safe the whole time? I've seen so many extreme vids of tips folding or canopies collapsing t's enough to scare me but then again I don't think I'd be trying to loop myself or stall for the fun of it....

cheezycheese - 25-8-2011 at 11:09 PM

@MB- yeah, that's what I was thinkin when I saw the graphic. I just wasn't sure Ozone produced gliders as well...

macboy - 25-8-2011 at 11:23 PM

Just rewatched. I don't know. I certainly can't say for sure but DAMN does that ever look like my Access' big BIG brother.....

Todd - 25-8-2011 at 11:31 PM

Thanks Marc, I resemble that remark

Yes Ozone is a major player in paraglide and Gin. I did feel safe the entire time however did happen to catch a near catastrophic take off from the pilot wearing the red helmet and shirt. I cut the clip because I didn't want his mistake being in my video. The launch instructor was screaming at him at the top of his lungs and then yelled at me that he wanted a copy of the video

hvkmike - 25-8-2011 at 11:31 PM

Ozone made paragliders before kites. Many paraglider companies have extended their product range to include kites now.Advance,Gin,Airea,Uturn.... but Ozone is most likely the most recognized by kiters.

John Holgate - 26-8-2011 at 12:22 AM

Cool, Todd. Not sure if I'm brave enough to try that.....

Todd - 26-8-2011 at 12:36 AM

Thank you John, I wasn't too sure if I would either hiking up that mountain. Sure was a lot of time to think before reaching the top.

cheezycheese - 26-8-2011 at 01:17 AM

Yeah, I saw that dude about to leap and his wing wasn't inflated...:Ange09::Ange09:
That could have been messy, what a great first experience that would have been...:D
How long was the ride down...?

Todd - 26-8-2011 at 01:46 AM

10 minutes max. We were the last to come off the mountain but have plans to do a dual tandem jump on a good day for thermals. I will be shooting Jesse with his passenger for the promotional video from another pilot.

snowspider - 26-8-2011 at 05:03 AM

That was a beautiful ride. Could your smile have been any bigger.

greasehopper - 26-8-2011 at 05:45 AM

Perfect home field , beautiful mountains ..........nice

Good vid ..... waiting for more

bobalooie57 - 26-8-2011 at 07:42 AM

:o I don't know if when the pilot said : now run as fast as you can toward the edge, and I'll handle it after that,(or whatever he said to you) if I could have made my legs move! Another awesome video of a great time. BTW, does Tomie have any sisters? 1st she introduces you to your new home spot, then takes you to jump off a mountain!

thanson2001ok - 26-8-2011 at 07:50 AM

Epic ride... and video!:bigok:

Wonder what that sport would do to my life insurance rates.:shocked2:

Todd - 26-8-2011 at 07:58 AM

Thank you Kober, house for sale two houses down... come on!
Thanks Bob, she has a brother so I was the one who lucked out and got the good stuff
Thank you Todd, I was wondering about the insurance part as well.

WELDNGOD - 26-8-2011 at 08:25 AM

AWESOME!!:thumbup::wee:

flyguy0101 - 26-8-2011 at 08:46 AM

I wanna do it- seems like the perfect activity for me.
scott

bigkid - 26-8-2011 at 08:52 AM

Todd, you got to keep this stuff to yourself.... It rains all the time in Seattle, we only drink coffee and work at Microsoft here,:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Nice ride huh? Sorry it was only 10 minutes, should have been much longer. And sorry you had to walk to the top and not ride on the truck, next time.
One of the local hot spots, used to hang glide there years ago, lots still do. Kind of unnerving, can't see the landing area until well after you leave the launch site.
Cheezy, The size for a tandem ride is 40m, singles are from 20m up to 28m depending on your weight.

OH, by the way, WELCOME TO WASHINGTON, Todd. Let me know the next time you go up, I'll film ya from the landing area, it's only 10 minutes from the house.

Todd - 26-8-2011 at 11:03 AM

Thank you Donnie, Scott and Jeff!

They had a 6:30 shuttle Jeff be I though... how bad could it be? I firmly believe that I blew out a kidney a 1/4 of the way in and ready to request a Defibrillator by midway. I'll let you know when the next tandem jump is and when I'll be filming, to have landing footage would be great! Thanks.

bigkid - 26-8-2011 at 11:20 AM

They had a 6:30 shuttle Jeff be I though... how bad could it be?
It's only a mile from the parking lot to the launch site, guess you need to get out more.:D:D:D:D:D:D

Cost

skimtwashington - 26-8-2011 at 03:25 PM

How expensive are they?

erratic winds - 26-8-2011 at 03:48 PM

Paragliders can retail 4-8,000+ for base models, so my googlin tells me. I have no idea of the used market.

Todd - 26-8-2011 at 05:13 PM

Jesse had picked up his tandem rig for 5k if I remember correctly, not something to mess around with for sure.

mougl - 26-8-2011 at 05:13 PM

Todd, that was one of your best videos to date! I would see paragliders before and think, "looks cool, but meh...I have my kites"

After seeing that I'm thinking, I NEED to try that!!! Freaking awesome!

B-Roc - 26-8-2011 at 06:22 PM

Cool. Soon you'll be just like this guy...

rocfighter - 26-8-2011 at 09:31 PM

OK So I'm lost here. Todd are you out there on vacation or did you move?
Anyway, Very cool video and I'm glad you did the walk up. Now put on a 40lb pack and come through the mountains with us for 15 days. Although we have to walk back down too:smilegrin: I'm glad you had a blast. And I'm glad you shared it with us.

g00fba11 - 26-8-2011 at 09:32 PM

Todd this is awesome..... thanks for sharing..... wow....

I found this doing some searches..... Paragliding Montana

I think I will have to look up some family along I90 from Billings to Bozeman and get signed up for a one day lesson and more if I can handle it.....

It maybe time to move back to where my roots are from.....

Powerws - 29-8-2011 at 05:13 AM

B-roc,............Thats sick! I want to do it!

ragden - 29-8-2011 at 07:05 AM

Sadly Mathias Rothen perished doing what he loved the most... Paragliding. What an accomplished pilot and will be missed by the sport.

Thank everyone for the kind compliments! Waiting patiently for a break in the weather to get up there and do some real filming.

Kamikuza - 29-8-2011 at 05:02 PM

Great movie Todd! Good score on the ride!

There's as big if not bigger scene here for powered-paragliding and a really good mountain an hours drive away ... great, just what I need - another hobby  though surely I won't need more than ONE paraglider ...???

Todd - 29-8-2011 at 05:32 PM

Thanks Kevin, that's just what I was thinking... another hobby

Just look at this site

http://www.paragliders.com/cgi/commerce.cgi?display=home

This goes into a bit more on what type of pilot Mathias was.

John Holgate - 30-8-2011 at 03:44 AM

What Is Paragliding? Paragliding is a fun, safe way to experience flight in its simplest form. You simply lay out a wing on a hillside or mountain, inflate it over your head like a kite, then walk to the edge of the hill and step off into the sky! Once in the air, a pilot is able to maintain and even gain altitude using lifting air currents and thermals. The entire paragliding set up weighs less than forty pounds and easily fits into a backpack.

Geez, sounds easy!! I'll bet it aint that simple. Todd, if you get into this, I'd like to hear all about it

Last October I was down the beach with the Manta 8m Demo and a couple of guys set up their paragliders and soared the main dune - up and down for several km's. They weren't very high and with a softish dune underneath them, it did look quite safe.

One day......

Todd - 30-8-2011 at 06:22 AM

I agree John... one day. Start up cost is high so it will be a while to round up some gear of my own. If I do take to the sky I'm sure it will be solo, I wouldn't want to take out someone’s life due to my lack of judgment or mishap.

Drewculous - 30-8-2011 at 06:43 AM

Looked like a blast todd!

I still havent been able to hook up with the gliding intructor here.... It sounds like $3.5-4k will get you up and running with new gear thatll last you a long time.... I priced out a mid level ozone wing and harness... But yeah.... When I get going, itll just be me, no one attatched to me... Unless she's cute

herc - 30-8-2011 at 02:38 PM

why buy a new wing ? just buy a used, safe beginner wing (DHV1 / EN-A) in good condition. you can even get complete equipment (wing, harness, helmet, rescue chute) for less than 1600 dollar on ebay and similiar sites. just make sure the wing is regularly checked, look at the check protocol - if it says at least "good condition" then its safe to buy and fly.
btw - i can just repeat myself: paragliding is incredibly fantastic! might look boring from the distance, but heck if you are up there in the sky - adrenaline rush guaranteed! "dont fly a kite.. fly yourself" (of course kiting is also fun, if it blows enough. but paragliding in a soft summer breeze with thermals that lift you up above to the birds - priceless!)

Todd - 31-8-2011 at 11:00 AM

Great information Herc thank you!

herc - 31-8-2011 at 11:31 AM

an even cheaper and more direct step into paragliding is groundhandling !
three easy steps:
* buy a used paraglider in your weight range with a build date at least 1998 (you can get such gliders for 100-200 dollar)
* buy a cheap old harness - 50 dollar and up (but preferably with foam airbag protector)
* buy a groundhandling dvd - for example: http://www.learnparagliding.com/learn_to_fly/paragliding_gro...
* practice glider control on a flat meadow - its very very similiar to kiting ! only important thing is to watch the wind - should not be above 12 knots in the gusts. so 5-12 knots is perfect. best would be smooth coastal winds

if you master groundhandling - and i am sure you will because it is so similiar to kiting - you are almost 95% ready to fly. canopy ground control and launching is the key component for a successful paragliding start. if you did groundhandling before, you will be the best student in the paragliding school and progress lightningly fast. because then the wing is already a part of your body scheme.

you can even do groundhandling with your kite:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taiW7TC5ZJo

but its nod the perfect training, because kites dont have separate risers and the smaller kites are much more "wriggly". the big paraglider wings are slower and damped and more well-behaved. and you can make small but floaty jumps with them :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9xt5pbfW78&hd=1 (btw, in the video you can see my advance alpha 3 paraglider that i got for 100 dollar - perfect beginner groundhandling wing)

John Holgate - 31-8-2011 at 02:39 PM

Todd's next gopro mount......

Wingmancam mount

heh heh heh.......

PS: Herc - cheers for that link. I've just ordered a copy of that for myself... I like the idea of a s/h paraglider for a few hundred bucks too - just for groundhandling, I'm not silly enough to try and teach myself to fly. Actually, I'm pretty sure you need a license, membership to HGFA, and 20 hours or so of supervised flight before you're allowed to fly solo here...or something to that effect. Really must book myself in for a course next autumn....
