Inexpensive/basic Chicken loop

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 03:16 PM

Titel pretty much sums it up.

I just recieved my crispy new used Venom2 19m today. I did a partial unpack to spot check zippers, lines etc.

It has lines and bar attached, but I am not seeing a Chicken loop attached. I always thought and in this case assumed if a rig was sold with bar and lines it also included a loop? Am I wrong in that assumption?

I got the kite for a screaming deal so cannot really complain, BUT now I am in need of a loop before I can actually use the set-up.
It has a "wind wing" bar on it if that matters? I hope to do a full unpack on the way home tonight if the rain holds off. I can get a picture then of what I have to work with..

The least expensive the better at this point..

AD72 - 2-11-2011 at 03:47 PM

Put some photos of the bar up. I am sure there will be some recommendations. A push away type is better than a pull the the pin to the hand grenade type (04 bar) which probably came with it.

indigo_wolf - 2-11-2011 at 03:53 PM

One of these bars?

And yes, generally if a bar is included it should be safe to assume that a chicken loop is included unless the seller specifically states otherwise.

ATB,
Sam

Ozone Megatron chicken loop........................sweet rig!

dandre - 2-11-2011 at 04:30 PM

well that sucks. atleast you have the FS to play with in the meantime.
i'd wait till the heat blows over from your last purchase... :ninja:

Kamikuza - 2-11-2011 at 04:42 PM

What bar is it?

g00fba11 - 2-11-2011 at 04:49 PM

Hey lamrith..... I got an extra chicken loop/depow from a Zero 4 bar lying around doing nothing......

You cover the postage and buy me a beer when we meet and it's yours......

I will post a pic shortly so you can see it and make the call......

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 05:41 PM

Indigo, thanks for the confirmation, being a Neb, I was not sure if maybe I was assuming to much. But every listing I have seen on here that says bar had a loop with it when the pictures were provided...

I am debating now whether I should bring it up with the seller. Tough, I did get it at a geat price, but it is not living up to being R2f as he said when I asked. I was able to lay it out after work and do a quick once over, I found a blown seam that needs to be repaired I will post those picts in the for sale thread...

This is a pict of the bar that came with the V2...

Kamikuza - 2-11-2011 at 05:59 PM

Yeah I'd ask for the CL - he may have just assumed that it was in there ... god knows what bar that is :o

g00fba11 - 2-11-2011 at 06:07 PM

lamrith... I don't know what you got there for a bar.... and I doubt this will help..... but let me know..... like I said cover the shipping and a beer.....

That is lousy to get a kite with a blown seam with out up front disclosure.......

Seanny - 2-11-2011 at 06:10 PM

…It looks like a C kite bar?

Technical details aside, Peter Lynn kites work best on Peter Lynn bars. I'd find a Zero 7 for your Venom, and since it's a 19m, make it the big bar.. 60 or 65 cm I think. It'll make turning easier.

If you just want the chickenloop, an Ozone Megatron or North Ironheart II is the way to go. Even a Zero 7 loop will do. Try to avoid the Zero 4 loop.

dave brown - 2-11-2011 at 06:34 PM

I did some research on that bar when he said the kite was mine..
I think he hooked into the trim line.. I asked him if it had a chicken loop
he said it had a soft loop.. He just didn't know what he was talking about.

The original loop on that bar had a pulley on it.. The line went from cleat to
pulley then was attached to the bar..
A very odd design.. they called it the cruise control bar...from 04 or 05 I think
As long as the bar has a hole in the middle you will have no problem using
the zero7 loop and trim system..

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 06:46 PM

Dave - I appreciate your sharing the info given you lost out on the rig. Once again my thanks, your def a honorable guy and if we ever meet I Def Owe you a beer:bigok:

Soft loop, so he what hooks that loop around the hook like you would a strop? There is a pulley there on the backside (away from kite) that has a Heavy Cordura tab. The tab has no loop on it I can see, not sure how it is supposed to work?

Yes this bar does have a hole in the middle, and I was wondering myself if I should replace the loop & adjuster mechanism...

macboy - 2-11-2011 at 08:00 PM

I hope by "good deal" you mean sub $250 cuz I wouldn't fly with that bar setup. At the very least you need a chickenloop, but probably the full depower line. I have a Megatron to swap out on my Frenzy. The old Ozone one would be all yours if you want it. Including the depower line.

I bought a Guerilla 2 on behalf of a buddy here and was glad I looked it over when it got here. There was no safety and no trimmer AND the bar was real old school.....the depower line ran through an eye bolt drilled through the bar.

I swapped it with another setup I had before giving it to him.

Don't know how to suggest you handle it. I think I paid like $40 for the megatrons. They're pretty great units....I have one on my Access and loved it so much I got one for the Psycho and the one for the Frenzy. If you feel the sale was misrepresented I'd talk to the seller but if it was just poor communication (not asking the right questions) I'd chalk it up to lessons learned and hope you got a REAL real good deal on the kite. For a Venom II it should have recent kit....so this isn't factory for sure. I really don't know if you wanna fly that setup.

lamrith - 2-11-2011 at 08:27 PM

Mac, It was a pretty sweet deal, and is the one from the "V2 19m on ikitesurf" thread in the for sale forum here.. $195 after shipping to my door. I did not ask a ton of quesitons, no denying that. But I did specifically ask if it needed any repairs and was R2F. I only jumped as he said it was 100%, I had not been looking for an arc actively, but the $ he asked I had to grab it thinking it was ready to fly. I did not buy it thinking I would have to put another 40, 100, 200 into it. Had I know that I would have let one of the others have it. Specially since I see other arc pop up and down all the time from other forum members for close to what I may end up spending if I have to repair it, replace the CL and depower adjuster or even whole bar... As you said, might have to chok up as a learning exp..

The only thing factory on the entire package is the Kite and Alum bars for it. The bar is as pictured and the bag while very nice is a Best Wharoo? bag. No complain on the bag it is a sweet bag and very expandable height and girth, lot of cinch straps, hold straps for a board, nice backpack straps and adequete waist belt.. I would have no problem hiking kite and board many miles to get to a beach and ride..

The real disapointment was finding a small (1") tear on the underside and the thread letting go. Hearing that is a super simple fix so I contacted powerzone about a repair.

macboy - 2-11-2011 at 11:54 PM

Score! You can chuck a $40 chickenloop at that and STILL be ahead of the game. And you'll love the kite. I spent a whole winter with it as my go-to. Loved it. Prob not planned budget-wise but good nonetheless.

PHREERIDER - 3-11-2011 at 05:45 AM

you COULD ride it like that but WILL NOT HAVE A RELEASE feature . not recommended for newbie.

you have to add a pulley ON THE LOOP or the trim won't work so good.

the pulley most likely broke on the OME loop so there something to be learned there.

i would redo the main, eliminate the double line, and try to use the clam cleat for trim.

keep it simple and ALWAYS have a front line flag safety slide ring.

fun unit, have fun! you are gonna be so addicted when this thing goes up !

AND WHAT A DEAL!

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 05:56 AM

Yeah hard to see in the picutes but it does have the single line slide ring eye feature between the pictured adjuster the kite.

Now I need to learn how to install a chicken loop and power line :-p

bigkahuna - 3-11-2011 at 05:57 AM

Looking at the photo you posted, I don't see how you could possibly add a chicken loop and safety without rebuilding the entire center line / depower strap assembly. I suspect that somebody assembled or re-assembled things as I cannot imagine any company selling a system that looks like that. Like Phree said, where's the safety release and leash? You've got almost all the parts you'd need to build up a proper system, plus a decent releasing chicken loop which has already been offered. But you'd need to know how to rig it up properly. If you haven't done this before, be sure to get some help first.

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 06:11 AM

Big,
Your right man, unless that Tab on the pulley connect to a pin release or something on a CL it is going to need a full rebuild.

Yeah I have hit up Goofball for that loop.

It did not come with a leash, that I know I have to obtain or make. Thankfully it does have the slidering. I have Bladerunners Pulse 7m here right now also which is what I will be flying before I try and put the V2 up. Next time I roll it out I will make sure to look everything over and take pictures etc. Really take my time to understand how the systems interact, then I can fab up using G00f's loop and let you guys take a look. Plus I have BK close by and he has offered to help too.

Great community we have here and many thanks to all that have helped and shared info!

Seanny - 3-11-2011 at 01:30 PM

I have built and strung several of my own bars at home due to lack of funds to buy a proper one. You will learn A LOT about kites, bars, and how the two function. It's a great experience. And yes, you did get an exceptional deal:)

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 01:56 PM

That is how I am approaching it now Seanny. Just a bit dissapointed it was not as portrayed..

Thankfully John @ power kite sports said it should not take much to repair the tear, and I will work on converting to a single line CL as well.

Seanny - 3-11-2011 at 07:52 PM

Tinkering with that stuff gets addicting. I've sat for hours in my room with a knife, a lighter, and parachord/comparable leader line material, and tied knots and made adjustments. You skip meals  But it is a lot of fun. I totally understand the disappointment factor, though. My first depower came completely kite only, so I had to fashion a bar myself.

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 08:03 PM

HAHA I am already there Seanny.. I built up a cross-over from a Ozone FB bar that has my 8m dancin in the air now :-p

lamrith - 3-11-2011 at 09:22 PM

So I emailed the seller asking about the lack of chicken loop. I recieved an email reply from him saying that when he said old wind wing bar he thought I knew that meant a soft chicken loop.. Bad assumption on both our parts, can't really fault him.

He did give me an overview of how it works though, and it sounds just like using a strop in that the bare rope goes around the spreader hook. He said the pulley and black tab is left free and unobstructed, it is the pull release, it has a bearing so it rolls free on the line and is easier/safer to grab under load. Just yank it down to pull the line off the hook..

I wonder if I get a spreader with the soft tab underneath that might be a simple solution? I think that is made by PL, I will have to look at the thread from a few weeks back, those were discussed...

The good news though now that I think about it is that I can even hook up now since my climbing harness has the ronstan QR on it already? I could do it like this, the pulley is useless in this situation, but I will leave inplace for when I get a waist harness with hook..

Overall now the set-up makes much more sense, is just old school. I am not in a buggy, or on board for now, so once the kite is repaired I may fly it as is, I have much learning to do on how an arc handles before I am going to get myself to powered up and into to much trouble..?

AD72 - 3-11-2011 at 10:41 PM

You could not pay me to use that rig. Be careful. The best type of QR on a chicken loop is a push away system which requires no tension on the lines. You do not want to be in a situation with that big kite ending up in the power zone on a luff and then you are fumbling for the pin to the hand grenade. Like mentioned above, add a megatron, PL 07, North Ironheart and you are in business.

zero gee - 3-11-2011 at 11:37 PM

Do not use that type of shackle! That type can be jammed by sand or ice and by the pressure of the kite loading it in emergencies when you really need it to work. I have used them as the chicken loop and on the kite leash. In both applications I had situations (just in very powered landing situations, not even emergencies... they turned into a kitemare however) that needed both hands and all my strength to open the release.

This is the only type of shackle I will trust... http://www.wichardamerica.com/2-3-4-quick-release-snap-swive...
I have used it for years as a chicken loop. Always releases. Never jams. No accidental releases either (if setup as a pull away from you safety).

The other issue you might encounter using that setup with a shackle is the possbility of the depower loop it goes through twisting around it. This can lock onto the shackle leg even after it opens and not letting go. Shackles need to be shackled to a solid ring to function best. I shackle to my spreaderbar hook. This also sets it up as a pull away from me release and no accidental releases. This shackle requires very little force to open even under load.

On another note... I have also used your type of shackle to park the kite at zenith by attaching it to a solid object and shackling to the chicken loop. Once, it had jammed slightly open and I did not realize it. Apparently it opened and was still gripping the chicken loop right at the end of that leg that the pin goes through the whole time I was having lunch. I was amazed to say the least.

lamrith - 4-11-2011 at 05:57 AM

Thanks again for keeping me safe guys!

dandre - 4-11-2011 at 07:09 AM

thats a big kite to get stuck to.

lamrith - 4-11-2011 at 09:45 AM

Yeah G00f is takin care of me.. Proper CL enroute. Thanks G00f!!!

Dandre - yeah exactly what I was thinkin!! I did not realise those QR's have a binding issue... Glad my FB bar has a proper CL on it..

g00fba11 - 5-11-2011 at 07:42 PM

anytime..... I can taste that Sam Adam's already......

lamrith - 7-11-2011 at 12:08 PM

W00T! Landed today, thanks G00f!!! Looks brand new!!

Now to tear down the bar and get it converted. I like the look of the 04, nicer than the CL on my FB bar..

Any tips or links to a site on how to connect/tie this into an aduster? It has a camcleat right now, looks like just an eye loop and cleat connects around it. or feed this line thru and around.. have to get all the stuf layed out at home tonight and see!:bigok::bouncing:

g00fba11 - 10-11-2011 at 05:40 AM

boy.... 3 days late to this and it sounds like your done already..... oooops......
