Sunset Beach dunes

Me and a few of my friends go out to Sunset Beach on the north Oregon shore. If you travel north on the beach towards the Peter Iredale (old shipwreck), the first dune gets pretty tall and steep. When the wind is approaching the dunes at about a 45 degree angle or less, jumping off them is spectacular. You gain instant height, and you get the additional lift from the updraft.

What we do is a modified pendelum jump. First we swing the kite away from the dunes while running/jumping off the edge. Once airborne, we pull the kite back towards the dune as we pendelum out. As soon as you are half way though your swing, pull the kite again away from the dune to extend your flight, and keep you from being slammed into the side of the dune.

Because you travel so much farther in the arc than you would on a normal pendelum, its important that you apply plenty of brake while in flight, otherwise you will end up way ahead of your kite, and it will ball up on you.

Although it is much more difficult to do, I've managed to do a multiple pendelum from the top of the dune, all the way down to the flat part of the beach. To acomplish this, on the second time you turn the kite away from the dune, release some of the brakes and forcefully. If you have enough height, this should pull your body away from the dune once again before you've landed. As soon as you're heading away from the dune again, do the last two turns as normal, and viola!! You've done 3 midair arcs, dropped about 80 feet, and covered well over 150 feet in distance!! Hang time for DAYS!!!

Granted the winds need to be perfect. Strong but not gusty, and running almost parallel with and slightly towards the dunes. (If its too parallel, you don't get the updraft boost, If its too perpendicular, it just slams you back into the dune) I've only managed the full 3 arc run twice, but each time it was WOW!!

The only really scary part is the initial swing out. Because you're on a the side of a steep slope, your powerful 12 foot pendelum suddenly puts you 30 or more feet off the ground, swinging out into oblivion!!

The plus side however, is that the dune sand is really soft.

I'm assuming that a sand dune would be a wiser choice? I got a sick hill jump at my school yesterday i covered a 25 foot distance about 4 feet up the hole way... so nice! i am hooked!:cool2:

It's totally of subject but i went to jump with my 3M today and i was just flying for a few and a bird flew into one of my cells! I landed and ran over to the kite and looked inside the cells and when i opened one of the more center ones it flew out and scared me so much :o but i feel really bad. Poor little bird. Really funny noise though it was just like chrunch from the fabric and a pop from it hitting the back of the cell. simmilar to when your kite hits the ground top down just quieter.
