12/2 **NEW Video** NYC Area: Mike Dobbs Invitational!

MikeDobbs - 18-11-2011 at 10:48 AM

It's official! :wee:

Join us for the 2nd MikeDobbs Invitational tomorrow morning at Long Beach.

Low tide is at 7:24AM, I'm planning to hit the beach around 8AM. Winds are predicted out of the SW in the vicinity of 13mph and gusting higher (if you were at the first one you know what I mean) so bring all your kites big and small. :singing:

If you've never been you can check out the meetup and kiting spt on google maps: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=214...

Hope to see you there- I know Marinitpro will be out for this.

ragden - 18-11-2011 at 10:54 AM

yowzers... 5hrs 18 minutes without traffic for me to get there...
Sorry... cannot do that this weekend. Maybe another time...

MikeDobbs - 18-11-2011 at 10:57 AM

ragden- no worries, that's a long trip. Tomorrow's not the ideal tide anyway being so early.

One of these weekend when the tides are mid-afternoon and the wind is predicted SW or SSW all weekend we'll look to get a bunch of folks out for an overnight two day event. That oughtta make the trip worthwhile for ya

bobalooie57 - 18-11-2011 at 11:03 AM

6 hrs 3 mins. for me! But then, thats what it will be for you too, if you come up for the Tug Hill Snow Kite Festival, MLK weekend. Just starting to snow here, we got a trace overnight. Wish I could be there.

As long as the cost isn't through the roof, that would be much more manageable. Cold weather doesn't bother me, but bad tides, and expensive over night trips tend to turn me off..

Now, if we do an overnight trip somewhere.. I might be able to talk Sunnie into cooking bulgogi again...
;)

Overnight trips to Tug Hill are expected. And the cost on those isnt generally all that bad (staying at Eddie's Place is pretty cheap). That and you gotta love the snow...
;)

MikeDobbs - 18-11-2011 at 11:08 AM

bobalooie don't remind me : )

If only big open snowy fields were closer to home... I am hoping to make it up for Tug Hill though. Also plan on reaching out to a local sod farm to see if they would be open to letting us kite there if it snows.

weather permitting

martinipro - 19-11-2011 at 04:54 AM

Leaving soon. Should be there by 8:30

MikeDobbs - 23-11-2011 at 11:03 AM

Thanks to Martin for coming out to buggy with me last weekend and for sharing his 4.6 FB when the winds started to drop.

Unfortunately, the SSW wind never materialised and we were forced to do mostly downwind runs on the beach- still had a great time though! At LB there's a boardwalk you can take back so the "walk of shame" isn't quite as bad as it would be trudgin through the sand.

I hope you enjoy this video I edited (mostly from my helmet cam) of the day. Had a pretty awesome recovery while underway after steering the kite straight into the ground at about 2:10. Also brought the GPS this day and was clocking 18-20mph pretty regular, with runs as high as 25mph.

cheezycheese - 23-11-2011 at 11:10 AM

Killer !!!

martinipro - 23-11-2011 at 11:14 AM

Nice Vid!

I gotta get myself a camera!

bobalooie57 - 23-11-2011 at 11:22 AM

Nice one! Sharing a spot is always better, I think. Fun video. Thanks for posting. Great recovery at 2:10.

Kober - 23-11-2011 at 11:46 AM

Hope to join you next time .........
.... looking good......

martinipro - 25-11-2011 at 08:26 PM

Attention all:

We will be flying again this Sunday 11/27. Winds are forecasted to be 14mph dead onshore. Tide will be low at 3:30pm.
I will be there around noon.

I know Mike will be joining me. Anyone else?

MikeDobbs - 25-11-2011 at 08:34 PM

martinipro - 26-11-2011 at 03:51 PM

I will be there a little later than originally planned. I think around 1:30.

MikeDobbs - 26-11-2011 at 04:27 PM

Thanks for the video props Todd- watching yours makes mine better. Tomorrow I'll be trying out my new GoPro HD Hero for the 1st time- can't wait!

:wee:Woo Hoo! Forecast is now for 12-13 mph winds dead onshore. :wee:

Low tide is at 2:57PM - I'll plan on being there around 1PM or a little earlier.

If you haven't kited with use at this spot yet, check out google maps for parking and flying locations: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=214...

Kober and Jaymz, would be great to see you there.

Cheezy- you out there?

Jaymz - 27-11-2011 at 08:38 AM

Can't make it today. Have a good one!

rocfighter - 27-11-2011 at 08:54 AM

Sounds fun. But I'm heading the opposite way today. Have a blast and give us some more notice next time:wee:

MikeDobbs - 27-11-2011 at 05:25 PM

Sorry for the short notice rocfighter- the weather report changes daily it seems, and we just don't want folks to drive out if conditions are poor.

:singing: We'll try to be more pro-active this weekend! :singing:

rocfighter - 27-11-2011 at 06:06 PM

Well no wind at Nahant at all. But I was going that way any how. After seeing you guys in the video Matt made I look forward to coming down and riding with you. Not very far either. Less than 2 hours I think.
I hope you had a great time. See you soon I hope. Dave.

MikeDobbs - 27-11-2011 at 06:10 PM

Hey Dave- we'd love to have you. The wind isn't always perfect, but (knock on wood) we've always had a great time at Long Beach. Today it was barely blowin 5mph when we got there, and by 3PM or so it had kicked up to high teens, low 20's. A great time was had by all : )

Just so you know, next week is an early tide (7-8 in the morning) so might not be a good day, but the following weekend tides should be good. If the wind shows up we'll be there!

MikeDobbs - 1-12-2011 at 07:00 PM

Hey everyone- new video from this past weekend- sorry to make you wait so long Cheezy . This is more fun at Long Beach, NY. When we arrived the wind was barely blowing at all, 5-6mph on the anemometer. Within an hour and a half or so it had picked up to high teens - low 20's and it was on! :wee:

Joining me were MartiniPro and his girlfriend Kristen who got her very first ride on the buggy (and was pretty stoked as you'll see in the vid)!

I also got my 1st runs on my landboard :tumble: (although not too fast just yet)

The vid looks a lot better if you click through to YouTube.
Enjoy :singing:

cheezycheese - 1-12-2011 at 07:10 PM

Ok that does it.... No more fun at long beach with out CHEEZY !!! :frog: love your vids Mike. You seem to be a natural at all of this  wish I was there.

MikeDobbs - 2-12-2011 at 10:35 AM

Thanks Cheezy- don't worry we'll get you out there again soon :)

PHREERIDER - 2-12-2011 at 10:49 AM

cool , shes one excited pilot!

martinipro - 2-12-2011 at 11:00 AM

She was! =D it wasvher kite too!

cheezycheese - 2-12-2011 at 11:13 AM

Was that your Method i saw Martin...?

MikeDobbs - 2-12-2011 at 11:18 AM

Yup- Martin was nice enough to let me have a go with it before the winds picked up. What a sweet kite. Very stable pull and beautiful colors in the sky!

Of course I packed that baby up fast when the breeze started coming on

cheezycheese - 2-12-2011 at 11:35 AM

I see that 2.5 imP is steady becoming your go to machine....

martinipro - 2-12-2011 at 11:46 AM

Yup my Method =D.

Winds we've been getting are no joke. We have been flying 2-3m kites.

I got way overpowered on my 4.7 that day.

MikeDobbs - 2-12-2011 at 11:55 AM

It's so funny Cheezy- I've hardly flown the imp at all since I got it a couple years ago- that is of course, until I started buggying Long Beach with you guys.

After that day with you it's seems to be my goto buggy motor. I don't have much to compare it to (being new at this), but when they winds are up it generates plenty of power, seems to handle gusts well, and if I drop the handles it's all over in the blink of an eye- so I feel safe even if it's blowin like crazy.

Man I love that kite! :spin:

I am itchin to give my 3m flow a go on those handles though : )

martinipro - 2-12-2011 at 12:01 PM

I just remembered you have the flow! You should be putting that thing up instead.

If I am not mistaken, its a little higher AR, should make it easier to go upwind.

MikeDobbs - 2-12-2011 at 12:03 PM

Yeah Martin- the flow is a monster. It's only a little bigger but that thing pulls like a truck. I probably could've gotten away with it this past Sunday- but the Sun was getting low in the sky and the IMP was already on the handles. Didn't feel like making the swap.

Next time we're out feel free to remind me it's in the trunk if I forget :eureka:

rocfighter - 3-12-2011 at 08:02 AM

Mike I think if I lived there I'd be single and unemployed!! Neither good things!!

martinipro - 3-12-2011 at 10:48 AM

Hmm dead onshore winds again!!

So tempting! Low tide at 9am.
