somebody PLEASE talk me out of buying this kite

dylanj423 - 15-12-2011 at 12:30 PM

so pbkkiteboarding has this SA 2.5 in custom colors that is exactly what i want in a kite, but its so dang expensive...

nearly $2K... i know that if i hold out i can get something very similar for about half that... But i really wanna buy one NOW!...

so, somebody, please, talk me out of it... any poor points on this kite? ...

its so pretty, too...

geez.... i got problems

BeamerBob - 15-12-2011 at 12:44 PM

It's only money Dylan! And isn't it Christmas time? Who knows better what to get you for Christmas than YOU? Oh wait, you wanted us to talk you out of buying it? I don't know how to do that. :duh::duh::lol::lol:

ragden - 15-12-2011 at 12:45 PM

What size is it?

The only thing I can say about the Speed2s is that they are a little touchy.. they do not like to sit still. When I was playing with a friends Speed2, if you tried to hold it in one spot... it either tried to surge over my head, or fall back into the window... Both of which normally ended up with a crashed, twisted kite...

Now, once it is moving, it is a great, amazing kite... But I really like my S3 better...
;)

i tried to get my best friend to talk me out of it, too... that didnt work either... dang

so a stability thing, eh?.... was the wind gusty that day?.. i do remember that about a speed1 13m that i had... anything the wind picked up, it wanted to overfly.... but in smooth winds was pretty well behaved

ragden - 15-12-2011 at 01:12 PM

It might have been a little gusty. But not enough to warrant the fickleness that I was dealing with. I was also still just learning how to kiteboard. So, some of that behavior you can account to that.

It also turns kind of slow. Great park and ride kite, but if you are expecting something to turn quick, this is not the right kite. The bridle lines are also pretty long, and if you get a tangle, it could take some time to unravel. IF yo uare used to PLs, it will have a lot of bridle lines by comparison.

Still, it is a great kite. Nothing wrong with it. Just very different.

I am about to buy a 2003 jeep Grand Cherokee for $1,500... Maybe that will offers some perspective...

With the Speed 4's due in a few months, the prices of the S2's should really be coming down!

....ok, I fibbed about the S4's....just trying to help ;-)

In all seriousness though, I really like my Speed 2 19m Red Devil for what it was intended...light winds and upwind mobility. Don't know if I would pay almost 2k for one in custom colors...I could swear I saw a 21m speed 3 for $2300!?! Needless to say, that went really fast!

thanson2001ok - 15-12-2011 at 01:54 PM

You are correct, a 19m Speed 2.5 without custom colors will cost somewhere around half that.

I say buy a 19m S2 Silver Arrow (all white) and a couple boxes of sharpies. :bouncing::crazy:

dylanj423 - 15-12-2011 at 02:09 PM

yes, yes, i agree with everything that has been said... i missed kamikuza's speed 2.5 a few months ago, and had poor timing on a speed 2 19m (reg) purchase around that same time...

the reg SA2 is too brittle, im afraid, so it has to be a 2.5 or later... that limits my current buying options... id totally buy a 19m reg fabric right now... this other one is tempting... so tempting... but the price... geez... although its only competitor is the speed3 21m SA, which is even more expensive and hard to find used... theres a guy selling one on ebay.de right now, but i cant communicate with him due to the language barrier...

aaaagggghhhh.... i must wait.... but its killing me

.... unless i win the lotto...

burritobandit - 15-12-2011 at 02:09 PM

Call PumpMeUp. He's Kami's best friend and probably has him on speed dial ;)

Kamikuza - 15-12-2011 at 05:26 PM

S3 21 is a step up for sure - much better in the depower stakes ... got caught out on mine in gusts to 30 knots and while it wasn't fun, it didn't kill me. Thank god I had a pal around to land me :o

Feyd - 15-12-2011 at 06:18 PM

For that kind of $ it better come with someone to help you land it.

AD72 - 15-12-2011 at 06:22 PM

Lunchbox if you ever get tired of seeing red you can trade with me for a white one.

PHREERIDER - 15-12-2011 at 07:25 PM

a race board will get you more ride time with the stuff you have...have to admit a land session in 15 would be sick

stetson05 - 15-12-2011 at 10:46 PM

I paid $1400 for mine over a year ago. It is the black/gold version. I don't know if the custom colors are worth $600. When I bought mine on ikitesurf there were several available. Try foilzone too. I was a little nervous about dealing with an unknown person but the kite is amazing. I wouldn't say my kite is the most stable one either. Maybe the mixer isn't set right but it will overfly. I often fly it by the leaders to keep it under control. It is worst at the top end, above 15mph. Once I am moving though it is simply amazing. If the colors are exactly what you want are they worth an extra $600? That is a whole other kite.

Kamikuza - 15-12-2011 at 10:58 PM

Send it to John at powerzone, Stetson - tuned my over-flying S2 into a very stable, grunty jump machine!

dylan, I had to laugh at this post, asking a bunch of kite addicts to intervene for a guy who knows he has a problem. Like going to the liquor store to NOT buy liquor.:dunno:
Go ahead and buy it, cause if it don't work out for ya, someone here will snatch it up.:bigok:

Very funny actually.

As far as 12 steps go we all have the first step down. We recognize we are addicted. That is as far as it goes. :spin:

@Kami-Yeah, I should send my kite to Powerzone. He is only about 4 hours away. I just don't want to be separated from my kite for that long. It would be a good way to guarantee some wind though.
