Ice Buggy tires

Where did they come from?

Looks like self tapping metal screws installed into the tire tread...

I agree a 3/8 inch head or a 3/16th inch shank, self tapping and a lot of free time I would think. I would think that about half as many bolts would work almost as well. They would need to be short, like half inch or less on the threaded area. I heard of people doing something similar to this with there bicycle tires. Works well enough.

Also want to watch the down wind turns. Those grab good enough that buggy is going over.

All in all not a bad idea though.

Still looks like there is a fair amount of fish-tailing involved.... no where near the "bite" of blades.

They also appear to be installed "point -in" rather than "Mad Max/Thunderdome"-style "point out" wondering how long before the inner tube is placed in jeopardy.

And yes.... definitely a whole lot of free time involved. I expect more than a few pets died due to forgotten feeding times. :sniff:

Looks like plenty of grip. yes, maybe fewer would still be just as good. Sure would open up some buggy space in cold climates with freezing lakes.

And lots cheaper than a set of Libre blades ($700)

I was thinking the same thing about the points popping the tire. but at the same time as long as the tread doesn't wear down they might last a fairly long time.

On the Libre.de web page ice blades are $514 plus shipping.

rocfighter - 24-1-2012 at 07:15 PM

We used to do the same thing to our dirtbike tires to run on ice when I was young and dumb. I don't ride any more because I'm old er now!!

You guys under estimate the time saving magic of POWER TOOLS. Add a pinch of OCD and there is very little a guy wont do to have fun kiting.

Jaymz - 24-1-2012 at 08:48 PM

For the best grip on ice using a "studded" tire, these screws are the ticket.....

On the bikes they give even MORE grip then race slicks on tarmac.

Jaymz - 24-1-2012 at 09:07 PM

...sure wish we had local ice....or even snow. about 2" total snowfall so far here.

rocfighter - 25-1-2012 at 05:42 PM

Jaymz that is just what we used to do. sucks when you crash and get hit though!!:wee:

doublespeed360 - 25-1-2012 at 05:43 PM

i'm with you jaymz ,one crazy winter.

indigo_wolf - 25-1-2012 at 05:58 PM

This past week we had about 2-3 inches one day and 4-5 inches the following day. However, very windy nights scrubbed most open areas clear and then multiple 40°+ days and some rain has only left little islands of snow (most under 1' in diameter).

25 degrees one day 70 the next here in Oklahoma. No Ice to speak of. We had about a quarter inch of snow melted in 3 hours though.
