NEW WORLD SPEED RECORD!

 Pages:  1

BeamerBob - 6-3-2012 at 05:51 PM

We didn't have a conversation about it but I just got a text message from Brian Holgate that he has reached 84.1 mph. I asked about gps variation and haven't heard back. Looks like he beat the record though. I'll be away for a bit but he will surely post his account of how he did it when he gets back.

shehatesmyhobbies - 6-3-2012 at 05:57 PM

Awesome deal! I hope it holds true! Great job Brian! Get some!

cheezycheese - 6-3-2012 at 05:57 PM

Go Brian !!! Whoop whoop kite loop...!! :bouncy:

lad - 6-3-2012 at 05:58 PM

On a beach instead of desert?
Multiple GPS's?

shehatesmyhobbies - 6-3-2012 at 05:59 PM

I am pretty sure it was on the lake bed!

dylanj423 - 6-3-2012 at 06:07 PM

congrats Brian;-)

WELDNGOD - 6-3-2012 at 06:59 PM

good one Brian!:bigok:

Bladerunner - 6-3-2012 at 07:16 PM

Way to go Brian.
I always think of you as #1 in freestyle. Now #1 over all !
Prop's to PL for working on the buggy and having the good sense to leave it in the desert. Where it had it's best chance to perform . I always felt the buggy didn't get a good shot with the pilots he chose. Ivanpah has a learning curve ! Brian sits at the top of that curve !

:thumbup::thumbup:

mougl - 6-3-2012 at 07:20 PM

I am still trying to imagine how that speed felt! My PB is just over HALF this speed and I felt like I was flying. Grats again Flyin' Brian!!!

BeamerBob - 6-3-2012 at 07:21 PM

The bits that I've gotten by text and phone call were that he made 1 run when the conditions worked out and it was with the 2.7m vapor. He was running 3 gps units, an etrex, Delorme Earthmate, and his gps which I'm not sure of the brand. The run was a total of ~2 miles. To answer one question that I saw, it was indeed at Ivanpah dry lake. I'm sure Brian will fill in more details here and do a writeup for Popeye's site as required for uber fast runs and certainly world record runs. Congrats to Brian for going for it today in crazy conditions. While on my way to meet him with a spreader bar, a streetlight fell off the pole about 50 feet in front of my car. Another second later and it would've hit the drivers side of my car.

arkay - 6-3-2012 at 07:28 PM

Wow vapor I 2,7..must have been howling!! Congrats!

deanaoxo - 6-3-2012 at 07:37 PM

Congrats Brian, way to represent!

markite - 6-3-2012 at 07:37 PM

Well it sounds to me like you were a crucial part of the day Bob - big congrats to you for loaning the kite and driving out with the spreader bar - avoiding that street light of doom.....

okay Brian too, way to go buddy that's haul'n ass for sure - save some of that for NABX. Sounds like a great day on the lake for you. Keep pushing the edge.

Kober - 6-3-2012 at 07:41 PM

Congrats ...... that is fast ......

Thanks Mark. I guess as crucial as can be and not be at the lakebed at all! I just helped out a fellow kiter like any of us would do in the same situation. I just had some stuff he needed and live here to be able to loan it to him. I wish I had been there to see it!

thrash - 6-3-2012 at 07:49 PM

what was he riding in? dont think a 2.7 kite would get the black pen s going that fast.

jellis - 6-3-2012 at 07:52 PM

Congratulations Brian! That's hauling ass and carrying big balls.

RedSky - 6-3-2012 at 08:09 PM

Wow! Not jealous at all,

When I heard of the crazy winds I knew someone would knock fast arie into second place.
Congratulations that man. I guess this means we all drop a place on the ptw leaderboard.
I reckon we'll drop an other few places yet too.

BeamerBob - 6-3-2012 at 08:16 PM

All he had out there was the um..... phallic buggy and his little XR+.

Yep, that's the one. Peter Lynn stickers are missing and the wheels have covers. I don't fit. At all. I have video of my son Wexler puttering around in it on Sunday and some scenes of it sitting still.

pretty stoked for that guy!

popeyethewelder - 7-3-2012 at 01:42 AM

What fantastic news, funnily emough I have an App on my phone which tells me the wind at Ivanpah, I emailed Bob to say get out there, its predicting 40mph winds.....then this news.

I find it very fitting that Peter Lynn, have produced the tools for Brian to get the New World Record, if it wasn't for PL, none of us would be here, and now all this time later, they (Company) are still at the cutting edge.

Well done Brian for your courage, and well done Peter Lynn

Ladieeeeeeeeeeeees and Gentlemeeeeeeeeeeeeen.............and the NEW WORLD RECORD HOLDER..........BRIAN HOLGATE

popeyethewelder - 7-3-2012 at 02:57 AM

Soooooo........Beamer Bob strikes again.......before Brians WR we all new that Bob had bought the fastest buggy in the world off Ozzy, the buggy in which Arjen set the previous record in.

Now...Bob has the worlds fastest PL Vapor, spreader bar and GPS unit to have ever been on a kite buggy, I think Bob you should open a museum "Kite buggy world records and the equipment used"

also, this is just you all over.....you go over and above the call of duty to help anyone out, I am so pleased to be able to call you my friend

thanson2001ok - 7-3-2012 at 07:35 AM

Great write up. Tremendous accomplishment. Hats off to you and your courage to fly in those conditions! Wow.

revpaul - 7-3-2012 at 10:23 AM

hah!!! cool video.
again congrats brian...:bisou:
and he didn't even think he was going that fast, wow, that must be a real smooth running buggy. i think he's going to get 90 mph soon enough.
(:P watching them try to launch the kite reminded me when i had only one kite, the 4.5 Ozone LD, and trying to launch it in 25-35 mph wind...what fun!!! yeehaw:karate::lol: )

jellis - 7-3-2012 at 10:43 AM

Congrats Brian on a historic record run. Enjoyed reading your documentation, and the video that let us share your experience. Looking forward to seeing your 90mph record.

mougl - 7-3-2012 at 10:43 AM

Drewculous - 7-3-2012 at 12:59 PM

'SLOW RIDE'

where's the actual run... c'mon, dont hold out on us!!

geokite - 7-3-2012 at 02:04 PM

Congrats!

Heard on the news that it was so windy planes were not leaving/flying out of the airport. SDSU basketball was considering a bus.

BeamerBob - 7-3-2012 at 02:11 PM

Yes, flights were delayed for takeoff much of the day. Seems like it wouldn't disrupt that as much as landings. They have 2 runway angles to accommodate the current wind angle. You get used to seeing the planes always land from the east then it looks funny to see them landing from the west and taking off to the east.

doublespeed360 - 7-3-2012 at 02:56 PM

just watch it 3 times ,thats wicked faaaaast, love it all, i think i got a taste of the playa when that gust came by.wicked cool brian and thanks bb.

Houston AirHead - 7-3-2012 at 04:23 PM

jesus, on a buggy? 84mph? that is really really really fast.

sand flea - 7-3-2012 at 06:38 PM

Way to fly Brian!!!
That is so extreme....
The best and fastest freerider in the world!!!

Try to make it back to Sunset this year,
thanks again for all your help,

KAZEDOKA - 7-3-2012 at 07:56 PM

KUDO'S Brian- Great; Run, Read and intense video. Flag was a nice touch. Your one cool dude strop line not releasing at

Brian
you are a true pioneer and a positive force promoting this amazing sport, can't wait to get down there!

Wolfpaklv - 9-3-2012 at 02:02 AM

Thanks to all of you...There has been some negative feedback from some and I am currently doing my best to quite them down. I am taking the GPS units down to a GPS store to see if they can help me download the log. I did find some video of the take off. One of the witnesses shot for a moment before, as he states "I disappeared into the dust".

I am not clear what you are asking.

Proof , is in the 2 witnesses and 3 GPS.

If you knew Brian`s character and skills you might feel a bit foolish being such a doubter !
Nice to see MG`s official responce

van - 9-3-2012 at 07:21 AM

That's kinda harsh. MG is only asking what the video is a proof of. Looks like a video of a buggy, nothing more. I think the title of the video is misleading. I don't think the question was pointed at a person, just a video.

BeamerBob - 9-3-2012 at 07:56 AM

Look at this another way and it will put perspective on the situation. There is video of Arie's record run and his gps units. Let me state first that I have never and still have no doubt about Aries run that day, but really what does that video prove? It shows a buggy going fast again, but how fast is he going in the video? The video was handheld and not smoothly showing the buggy's travel. Witnesses, multiple gps units, and a video don't really make Arie's run any more credible than Brian's. Many don't realize that Brian does professional video for a living and could easily put together a video that shows whatever he wanted it to, but he didn't. He just has what he has and left it at that.

MDK - 9-3-2012 at 09:38 AM

There were 2 witnesses. We heard from one. It is extremely unlikely that a witness would lie for the benefit of another. Video would be nice, we all want to see it obviously, but video is not proof of speed. The GPS was witnessed, that’s proof.
@ Brian, congrats! And I wouldn’t worry too much about the negative feedback.

MG-kites - 9-3-2012 at 10:37 AM

I believe that he made the run but what is this video telling.
Just sitting in a buggy and nothing, then you can better post nothing.

We want to see some action and some dust behind the buggy, whatever for run it is......

Craig Sparkes - 9-3-2012 at 10:44 AM

Ok here goes.

Being honest I did not believe it when first saw it, It wasn't aimed at Brian but having seen that buggy struggle in past didn't think it could do it without major mods.

The thing that triggered it was the GPS readings which seems to say trip 1, trip 2, and total trip time.

My thoughts were last trip 6.57 long over 2miles. This gave a low average speed and thought it wouldnt get upto 84mph in that time/distance as how people said acceleration was so quick.

My honest thought was Brian arrived, reset GPS, then drove to get harness, came back (1.01 hour time) then reset GPS but not max speed. So my thought was speed came from Highway.

BUT I've seen the GPS up large and it says.

Time Moving 6.57 Mins
Time Stopped 1.01 Hour
Total Time 1.07 Hour

Avg speed 3.4 mph

IF brian had taken it with him by accident those times would be greater for moving, and average speed would be greater also.

I really do think Brian did it. The GPS figures do match up.

I know the video is odd that none of take off, I think that is what people got edgy over.

Well done to Brian as said on Facebook!

Craig Sparkes - 9-3-2012 at 11:01 AM

BUT more importantly.......

Brian does this now mean you will be entering speed of day at NABX and not the Freestyle Comp:P

Have we lost you to the world of Big Buggies??? :o

See you at NABX?

Ozzy - 9-3-2012 at 11:23 AM

I agree with Graig,..also, this is for a harcore Kitebuggyer, like Brian, to important to be hounest about, I am hard core believer about this record, buggyers like us, and Brian, do NOT make fun about such records..

Way to go Brian !!,....have fun in the next one !!,....feeling a bit sick that I couldn't join you guys... :(

regards, Ozzy ( just 116.2 kmh....:),... )

sunset-Jim - 9-3-2012 at 12:22 PM

I had a feeling when I first saw the vid that there might be some nay-sayers. It got me thinking just what is "proof". A video? No, because how easy is it to manipulate that. Witness?, there again... no. Too easy to gather a conspirators. GPS?, Obviously too easy to fake that one as well. One thing that can not be easily altered is ones character.

So I asked myself these questions. Did the conditions warrant the possibility? Yes. Was the equipment used capable of such a feat. The kite yes, the buggy... if what was learned by previous attempts were resolved. I do not know this off hand but felt pretty safe to assume that they did. Does the GPS show it done? Yes, 3 of them actually. Would have had some doubts relying on only 1 of course. Witness? yep. Ok, so the pieces of the puzzle do fit. But for me the one thing that cemented the puzzle into a true picture is knowing Brian.

deanaoxo - 9-3-2012 at 01:52 PM

Guys, gals, Brian, gentle folk, it is very natural to question world records.

Currently, Bobby Muse has seen the track data and is a believer. Not that anyone doubted Brian's veracity, but when it's a world record, all of us want it to be true, no mistakes and way to go Brian!

So, proof is coming to all! Popeye holds to a very high standard as do all of us this side of the sport. Nothing personal, all aoxo here!

Stand by for more, look forward to a big toast to Brian at the banquet!

deanaoxo - 9-3-2012 at 02:09 PM

Congratulations Brian Holgate!

What a run!!! There is no doubt, and what a run it must have been, pure acceleration, just really wild, and what a testament to the buggy, my gawd man! Did you check your pants!

Folks, this was one hell of a feet, I so wish we had video, not to prove it, because we know he did it, but to ride along on this awesome journey.

Just magnificent! Would love for you to break the run trak out so everyone cans see what an incredible achievement this is!

Again, Congrats, I can't wait to shake your hand!

Pure speed, pure Aoxo~

BeamerBob - 9-3-2012 at 02:11 PM

YES! We spent the last couple hours learning how to extract track data and used the "basecamp" software recommended by the staff at Garmin. We have graphical representation of his track and when that track is selected and properties are looked at there is a page of all the data points corresponding with the track. This IMHO is an unquestioned world record run. This data file has been shared with Popeye the Welder, dean jordan and Craig Sparkes, to show them what convinced me and they are all in agreement that this is indeed a verified world record run. Popeye has already updated his site, celebrating the new Kite Buggy World Speed Record. Congrats "Flyin Brian":thumbup:

http://popeyethewelder.com/world-buggying-records/100kmh-clu...

Drewculous - 9-3-2012 at 02:12 PM

nothing will top my 556 mph at jibe last year... angus saw it  (the gps reading anyway :smug: )
[you get funny looks from the crew when you insist on leaving the gps on during flights]

Gratz again Brian... Its all freaking amazing, i just like buggy vids... thats the only reason i want moar!!

Craig Sparkes - 9-3-2012 at 02:25 PM

Brian, hope you do not mind me posting this as shows the amazing run so clearly?

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/1970/worldrecordproof.jpg

*Gave link as forum resizes it!!

You can clearly see run out to left pick speed and head to bush's! 100% On this run, the data shows 83mph but this is over a few seconds and GPS's both showed over 84mph. This proves a kite buggy run on playa and speed. I've looked all over GPS log and no other speeds close to that point.

Full respect to Brian!

shehatesmyhobbies - 9-3-2012 at 03:13 PM

Glad this is put to rest and now it is time for Brian to sit back and enjoy the record! I hope that he can only keep trying and do even better!

Again Brian much respect for that mad run!

BeamerBob - 9-3-2012 at 03:28 PM

Thats the really amazing thing is you can look at how short his run was. It was only a trial run to see how everything worked. Who knows how fast he could've gone with 5 miles to fine tune and adjust his angle to the wind. I described his run as "throw a match in the gas tank and see where we go". Brian agreed.

Donaldgould - 9-3-2012 at 03:41 PM

Way to go Brian !!! What's next ? And just my 2 cents if there was someone the beat the man it was going to be Brian H. I have some video of him going back words some were between 30 & 40 mph !!

rtz - 9-3-2012 at 03:44 PM

I'm curious as to what the situation would have been had a 2.3m been used.

van - 9-3-2012 at 03:47 PM

GPS points are the way to go as proof. Videos are not necessary and has no way to show speed. So who's up for the 100mph attempt??

Wolfpaklv - 9-3-2012 at 04:06 PM

I'm ready for that challenge. My new goal is to be the first to break 100mph. With that buggy I could have easily hit that speed had I started at the freeway. It was a very short run. Felt kinda like a Drag Race! Now that this is settled I can relax. Most of you don't know me very well but to the few that do, I am not perfect. But one thing is for sure...you can always count on my word. My word is my bond, and as a man, that is all that we have.

Now I saw I uploaded the wrong video for you guys and I know you want to see. So I have a video that one of the guys took that I recently discovered. You will see me "Ride into the sunset...of Dust" LOL!

I am curious about this too. isn't it smaller kite faster speed. If the 2.7 can do 84 mph whats the speed of a 2.3?

I rest my case ,.... :) , good one Brian !
