2012 Alberta Winter Kite Fest is on!

macboy - 7-3-2012 at 07:57 PM

Someone picked up the torch. March 10th & 11th (this weekend).

Forecast doesn't look great so bring big kites, warm weather wax and lots of lakeside beers.

cool

canuck - 9-3-2012 at 09:19 AM

I will be able to make it Sunday. How do the conditions look? It is 13C down here and chinuuking today. All of our snow is going fast.

macboy - 9-3-2012 at 03:01 PM

16 in my backyard today! Plan on a visit. You might be able to fly and maybe with skis on?

I'm planning to be there Sunday from about 12:30 to 4pm - regardless of conditions. I'd keep an eye on this site after nightfall tomorrow to see how Saturday was and decide from there.

Rumour has it Shaggs might come out so we could at the very least meet him perhaps. Not sure if Alex is coming up. There's a good few others on here from the area - it'd be good to meet all of y'all!

Tell ya what, I'll have enough beer in the back for any and all PKFers that come out Sunday afternoon. Big black Chevy Trailblazer.

revpaul - 9-3-2012 at 05:23 PM

maccy-b you're going sunday?
i'll bring my little fella on Sunday too for a road trip.
not even sure if i'll need to bring some ripstop.
19mSA2 is gone but i still have 17Sp1.5 if anyone is interested in trying shaking it out.
12mPulse2 is here too.
:bouncy:

canuck - 9-3-2012 at 08:22 PM

It will be great to see the Edmonton gang again. I hope shaggs can make it too.

macboy - 9-3-2012 at 09:02 PM

RevP - Yup. In for the visit if nothing else.

PrairieWind - 10-3-2012 at 12:36 PM

have fun up there. too far of a drive for me from the deep south of Alberta. Here it was +19C yesterday and might get to 20 or above for tomorrow. Even the higher altitude ice in Cypress hills will get severely sketchy very quickly - the winds are 40km gusting to 70. The ice on the lakes closest to Medicine Hat were basically done 2 weeks ago with the wacky weather. Wacky.

macboy - 10-3-2012 at 02:01 PM

So really though....there is so NO wind here today that even an all out sprint would not put a breeze in your hair.

But there's beer!

8-11 knots forecast for tomorrow. Crappy direction but nice and steady. (Check the super forecast)

shaggs2riches - 10-3-2012 at 06:27 PM

I'm gonna make an appearance. Leaving Lloyd by 10:00. It's gonna good to finally meet you guys.

macboy - 10-3-2012 at 08:38 PM

Canuck/Shaggs - see you tomorrow! Hopefully some of the other local PKFers too! Might be time to break out the PKF Hoodie.

RevP - hope you can make it out! (Hope you had fun with the helis today too.) Put a few miles on the Honda Trail 70's today :wee:

revpaul - 10-3-2012 at 09:16 PM

i'll be there. might actually bring some ripstop and a Rev or two.

shaggs2riches - 11-3-2012 at 10:08 AM

Well I slept in a bit here and had to run to Canadian Tire for my wife, so I'm gonna be an hour later than originally planned. Leaving my house now so that should hopefully put me there at around 1:30 see you all when I get there.

shaggs2riches - 11-3-2012 at 06:10 PM

Just leaving the lake it was good to meet everybody. Glad there was wind

canuck - 11-3-2012 at 08:32 PM

It was great to meet you too and see macboy & revpaul again.. Hope to get more kiting in now that daylight savings give an extra hour in the evening.

shaggs2riches - 11-3-2012 at 09:21 PM

Yeah the time change really caught me. Thought it was maybe 5:30, so landed and got ready to pack. When I checked the time it was 6:45 lol. I got packed up and visited with Mike and the few others for a bit and left. I got home half hour ago at 9:30. The drive down hwy14 would be 3hrs if I hadn't been speeding to get home.

kiteboyza - 12-3-2012 at 06:39 AM

urgh...I had other commitments so couldnt make it. Lets see some pics

shaggs2riches - 12-3-2012 at 08:38 AM

I've got over two and a half hours of footage to edit off the gopro. Mike was really getting shots with his camera. It'll be good to see what he comes out with. I hope to get some edited this week. From what I watched last night, a lot of it is pretty shaky.

revpaul - 12-3-2012 at 09:09 AM

man it were pretty much 75% FS 19m and a couple of FS 21m.
then you see Canuck park-n-riding with his 8m Access.
granted the extra-large FS guys were mixing in some boosts but it was still neat to be standing around the watering hole listening to the big FS riders commenting favorably on the Ozone and wondering what size it was. we could all see it was small (compared to all the 19-21m with a few 12-15m). i seen Canuck un-roll it and i though it was 8-ish (as i just had my 7.3 Frenzy up and it looked about the same size) but i had to guess 10-ish by the way he was being towed.
it was 8m.
neat. good to get out for some fresh air and chit chat.
glad shaggs and canuck were able to put some miles on the lake.
Paul

shaggs2riches - 12-3-2012 at 11:13 AM

The wind picked up the last hour and I was able to get some nice park n ride. My 12m speed 2 felt the most in tune I've experienced. Trim all the way out and bar half way in, crank it a couple times and I was off. Could feel the power increases with slight pulls of the bar. But those other guys were on those white speed3 19&21 in the same winds, so I could have handled more wind.

shaggs2riches - 12-3-2012 at 11:18 AM

Wish I had taken Mikes offer to try some of those kites, but I was glad to get those miles in with my gear.

macboy - 12-3-2012 at 01:09 PM

I think we're kindred spirits 'cuz it took me years to get to the point where I was comfortable asking him to try anything....which is odd....'cuz that's why he has 'em - for people to try out. Too bad I launched the Unity at the lowest part of the day. My lazy gene stopped me from unrolling another kite and I spent the day BSing and watching but hey - I hadn't seen the "locals" all winter - our snowkite season was officilay ONE DAY long. Yesterday

I WISH I'd grabbed some pics of Paul's little fella flying the trainer. Missed Canuck but grabbed a few of you just before I hit the road.

Great to meet you Shaggs, we'll all have to plan a trip to Keho this summer? Maybe we can convince PrairieWind to come out and play.

"I WISH I'd grabbed some pics of Paul's little fella flying the trainer. Missed Canuck but grabbed a few of you just before I hit the road."

yep....that reminds me...I'm going to have to pick one of those little trainer kites up. a tiny little 3 line (Mike's were two liners just a bugger to reluanch). Spencer (just turned 5) really did a lot better than i expected for the first time. there was no leash (and at 1.5m or whatever size it was)and it was yarding him off balance pretty good. so i was holding one hand on the bar mostly just to stop it from getting ripped out of Spence's grasp and had the other hand holding him by his britches.
Of course the whole time he was instisting he was G2G (good to go) and I could remove my hand (from the bar) as it is getting in his way. :singing::spin::thumbup:
I've got some small Busters but they are quad and some NPW but they are also quad. I'm going to need a three liner for him.
Cool little squirt he's turning out to be.

macboy - 12-3-2012 at 03:12 PM

The part we're forgetting to tell everyone is when the little chap asked you if he could fly the 7m Ace you had out. I watched you let him hold the handles while you flew it and then heard him ask if he could fly it by himself

I agree - what a great kid you got.

Bigbear97e - 12-3-2012 at 04:22 PM

hopefully next year, with a little notice, the rest of us Alberta boys can make it ... I'm always looking for an excuse to roadtrip home ...:D

shaggs2riches - 12-3-2012 at 04:35 PM

Don't feel too bad it took me 3 winters to finally make it to the festival, and I live 2 1/2 hours away lol

Man in those 19&21 speeds really make my 12 look tiny.

I started with my Mac Bego 600 but put it away after a couple of passes 'cause it was too much work to hold it when I hit 50kph. The wind dropped a bit - I should have stuck with it :wee:
