i have never been to the playa so here we go.i am planing on doing the 24 hour solo so my question is. what kind of tires(big foots, midis, or
barrows). is there a place to buy tires and rims on the playa or am i going to have to bring my own. i also here say that people burn through tires in
hours. i know distance is what destroys tires but average life of a set of tires would be nice. sam if this has been asked kindly direct me to the
thread. thanks guys

Some go through tires in a day easily, they last me years. Smooth
barrows. There are no sales on the lake bed, however some people will pre pay Kent at AWOK for some to be delivered or bring a couple of spares.
There is usually always somebody out there with some (I will have some, FYI.)

When I had my libre buggy I rode the same set of tyres for 2 years and there was still no cords showing when I sold it. Last year I had the mg and I
wore through the front tyre in a couple hours. This year I have my apexx and I am bringing 12 tyres for this trip. I hope I run out .. that will mean
the wind is good lol.
It all depends on how you ride out there as to how many tyres you will go through. In the Libre I never felt confident and safe like I did in the mg
and now in my apexx. Confidence = flying overpowered and going for speed. This also means you burn up tyres much quicker. If you go out there and
cruise around your tyres can last many years of nabx.
So it all comes down to how you ride as to how many tyres you will need.

Anything like Mr. Holgate you will generally only wear them out 2 at a time.

Most everyone is using 4 ply slick barrow tires.

Brian's tires wear funny with a curved shoulder on the outside. My tires wear evenly. Avoid the ribbed 4 ply tires that come on the PL XR+. I
showed cords last year on my front tire after about 60 miles. The V50 Vredensteins that came (used) on my Apexx are still going, with me putting over
500 miles on them and they are still going. Apparently not available in the US.
Wexler wore through a new tire in about 100 miles or so recently. I need to add weight to his front end to tighten up the traction on his front
wheel.
Tire wear is grossly accelerated by slipping while trying to edge back upwind trying to slow down.

Vredstriens are a thicker tire and last longer. No you can't get them in the USA.
Support the locals that also support the event
Kent and Corey both own shops done there. They will not sell you gear on the playa but you can visit their websites and Pre-order anything you need
and have delivery to the playa. Awesome service they both offer.
If you cruise you may never change your tires and if you're a speed nut or freestyler bring lots. It all depends on you. Why not order a few just
case, and you can bring them back next year. You will be back to NABX.

You will likely not burn through a single tire. you have to ride them pretty hard to burn through them. I wouldn't worry about it, and if on the off
chance you bus a tire then you'll be able to find one.
Don't stress and ride whatever you have on there, smooth, ribbed, ... nevermind. Last I checked they all roll forward Now if you do happen to have really nice bigfoots mounted that are designed for the
beach then I'd suggest getting barrows. you very well could blow out a 2ply bigfoot
BeamerBob - 18-3-2012 at 10:44 AM
Yes the ribbed roll just fine, its just that you are left with a 2 ply tire after you quickly grind off the ribs if you are riding aggressively.
Just cruising and no sliding and tires can last you for years no problem. I ran the wide tires (6.5-8) on my Flexi bug I took the first year and I
couldn't even detect wear on them after 3 days of riding.
