Buggy spots in western NY

stillflyin - 20-3-2012 at 07:00 AM

Is anyone active in the Rochester NY area? The lack of ice has me searching for alternatives. We have been using the Cmac parking in Canandaigua but it is not good in south winds. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

bobalooie57 - 20-3-2012 at 07:09 AM

Have you looked at Fairhaven Beach State Park? I've wondered about that, but never been there. There looks to be a nice stretch that could be workable in a N or S wind.

stillflyin - 20-3-2012 at 07:25 AM

I have not been to Fairhaven, we have concentrated our activity in the Finger lakes on the ice in the winter and athletic fields and parking lots in the summer. There are also some huge hay fields we can use close by.

bobalooie57 - 20-3-2012 at 08:40 AM

Fairhaven is slightly closer to you, but close enough to halfway, I'd be willing to make the drive to check it out. Maybe snowspider has been there, or might want to meet up, also what about BEC? Anyone??

cheezycheese - 20-3-2012 at 08:48 AM

Yeah, I believe that's Bec's neck of the woods.

cheezycheese - 20-3-2012 at 11:00 AM

Hey Stillflyin.. Welcome to the forum. I spoke with BEC, you should hit him up with a U2U. He's a few minutes away... Maybe you guys can carpool to the wildwood buggy bash next month. I know he is going...

stillflyin - 21-3-2012 at 06:43 AM

Unfortunately I have prior commitments that will keep me from Wildwood this spring, maybe in the fall I will make it. I will U2U BEC, thanks.

bobalooie57 - 21-3-2012 at 06:57 AM

Well, the weekend forecast isn't looking too promising, with possible rain and light wind, but I have Friday off, and the weather is looking like ptly cldy, around 50 deg.F, with wind from the NE at 10-15. I may make the drive to Fairhaven and check it out.

stillflyin - 23-3-2012 at 06:19 AM

The weather is not looking very good at all for the weekend, probably will forgo the road trip. Today looks like the best chance, to bad I have to work. Bobalooie if you get to Fairhaven let me know what you think.

stillflyin - 26-3-2012 at 07:39 PM

Made a trip to Fairhaven today, the beach at the park would work but is fairly small. The beach near Sandy Shores campground is all stones. Didn't stay. Headed for Cmac parking lot in Canandaigua and had a riot.
I will keep watch for a good westerly and head for Southwick soon I hope.

bobalooie57 - 4-4-2012 at 06:01 AM

Great to hear about Fairhaven, I never did get there. Fri. 4/6 (Good Friday) is a holiday for us, so I plan on going to Southwick. Right now forecast is for wind starting NW then switching to W at 10 to 15mph, sunny and 50 deg. Sat looks ok with NW wind around 10.

stillflyin - 4-4-2012 at 11:24 AM

What is your timing for Fri.? I have to use up some vacation time I might make a trip up. It is 2.5 hrs away so I don't think I will be there real early. Looks like the direction gets better as the day goes on though.

BEC - 4-4-2012 at 12:55 PM

There is a nice field off of 390...on Martin Rd. I believe it's called Martin Rd Park...Its about 6 soccer fields ganged together. I have a couple other fields like this, however when weather gets nice....all the HS kids are out practicing sports on them. I have a bunch of other fields that I fly in...some as big as 300 acre lots but they are private property. If you were with me that probably would be OK but it took me years for them to say yes and I don't want to freak them out. I will U2U my cell phone number...give me a call.
I would also be happy to meet you, have a beer, and get a game plan to go bang on some doors together for more field access.

stillflyin - 4-4-2012 at 07:03 PM

sounds like some of the fields we have around here. The best one is 2400'w x 3700'L and it is a hay field, but they just plowed and replanted it last fall with a different kind of hay so it will be to thin and easily damaged to use this season. Other than that it is athletic fields, Victor High School is fun, it is terraced with grass slopes between the different fields. But we use the event parking at CMac the most. It wears tires quick due to the blacktop but you sure can fly. I got 1.5hrs after work tonight on a friends land sailor. I will give you a call.

bobalooie57 - 5-4-2012 at 04:41 AM

I plan on being at Southwick by noon tomorrow, and buggy until I can't anymore. The forecast (NOAA - NW to WNW at about 11) has modified slightly, but still should be rideable. I'll park at the Beach Parking area, and set up on the beach, unless the water is real high, then I'll be at the end of the beach camping area, heading S into the Lakeview WMA.

stillflyin - 5-4-2012 at 07:16 AM

Works for me, I should be there by noonish, unless the forcast goes to crap. See you on the beach.

bobalooie57 - 28-4-2012 at 05:29 AM

Dredging up an old thread, I plan to spend this afternoon at Southwick Beach, forecast is for west wind about 10mph, so might get to use the Quadrifoil XXXL!

stillflyin - 28-4-2012 at 11:38 AM

Have a blast, moving my daughter this weekend so I can't make it up. Rats!!!

bobalooie57 - 29-4-2012 at 04:48 AM

Don't feel too bad, Rick, you didn't miss much. Wind averaged about 8mph, and varied from SW to NW and back over the course of the afternoon. I tried several different set-ups, and ended up on the 7.6M NPW9, my best speed of the day a mere 15 mph, but I put on 11 miles, poking around at an average 5 mph. I never even turned on the camera. Highlight of the day was when a small,(maybe 3 seater?)helicopter came screaming up the coastline from the south about 100 feet off the deck. I was eating a sandwich at the time, and had to jump out to where I had the kite staked out, to hold it down and keep it from blowing up into a knot from the prop-wash! :spin:

bobalooie57 - 11-5-2012 at 05:44 AM

I'm headed to Southwick again this afternoon for a much needed session. Weather is sunny and high 60's, with wind from the west at 15-20! :wee:

snowspider - 11-5-2012 at 07:32 AM

Woke up this morning , looked out side , "damn wish I had checked the weather yesterday" I would have called in sick. Enjoy the day, it looks spectacular!

bobalooie57 - 12-5-2012 at 07:43 AM

So I went to Southwick Beach yesterday, when I got there wind was right on shore about 15mph, and I immediately put up the 4.8M NPW, which I have on a 2-line bar. I got some excellent runs up and down the state beach area, before stopping to hook up my camera and gps. I rode for about an hour, then the wind dropped off a bit, and switched to SW. I took out the 7.6M NPW9, built by km4, and acquired recently from airin. I had to work my way in both directions, going upwind(S) tacking back and forth, and to the north, working the kite to keep from catching up to it. After about an hour of this, I took a break for some rest and sandwiches, and when I went back out the wind had picked up again, and went back to W. I took a couple of runs with the 7.6 and was powered enough that I decided to go back to the 4.8. I took a few runs that extended south into the WMA. There are signs there, every 50' or so, warning people that "Dunes are fragile, please stay out of the dunes". Well, I guess my attention lapsed for a sec., this is the result!

kite damage 005,resize.jpg - 32kB

cheezycheese - 12-5-2012 at 07:47 AM

Oh no Bob... That sucks !!! What happened... Sign got hungry ?:dunno:

bobalooie57 - 12-5-2012 at 07:48 AM

Anyway, I got 4 good years out of her, so not so hard to lay her to rest. Oh, I covered just under 30 miles in about 4 hrs of riding time, with a top speed of 19.5mph. I had a great day!

bobalooie57 - 12-5-2012 at 07:52 AM

Yeah, the sign had evidently fallen over, and someone had propped it against another one, and wrapped some wire around it. It stuck up above the other signs by about a foot and a half. Bottom line snagged it going by, and before I could react, rrrrrip! I certainly got my money's worth out of it, though.

bobalooie57 - 12-5-2012 at 08:07 AM

Of course, I didn't have the helmet cam on when it happened. I felt the line snag, and turned my head to watch, almost as in slow motion, the kite get pulled into the sign, even as I was trying to slide the buggy to a stop, and the kite just going "POP"! Ripped the bridle/outside reinforcement line right out of the kite. Then I had the 1/2 mile walk of shame. Got about 2 hrs of video to go through, and I'll post some of the ride.

stillflyin - 12-5-2012 at 09:12 AM

Major bummer bobalooie, don't chuck it, NPW's are easily fixable. Hang on to it I will see what I can do with it.

bobalooie57 - 12-5-2012 at 09:36 AM

I'll hang on to it, and you can try, but this kite is no where near crispy any more, I flew all that out over two years ago! Tell you what, I'll hang on to it for you, and if you can get it flying again, it's yours. I keep looking at today's forcast, looks about as good as yesterday! Darn, do I stay home and do yardwork, or go fly again???

vanatta251 - 12-5-2012 at 06:23 PM

Hi guys. My name is seth, and im from just west a couple miles from the city of syracuse. So i figured i'd introduce myself here. I have just started into kiting, when i recently purchased a peter lynn viper 2.6 from dakitez. I mainly use it currently for doing stunts, and having it drag me around. Brought it out this afternoon around 4ish to Oneida shores county park, wasn't much wind so it was hard to keep it in the air with the winds coming and going but boy are these things fun to play with.

I got the foil really dirty while trying to re-position it on the ground for the ever changing wind direction, what is the best way to clean these? I have heard just some warm water and paper towels will do the trick, but what do you guys think?

bobalooie57 - 12-5-2012 at 06:47 PM

Welcome to the fun, Seth. snowspider is close to you, also in the Syr. area. I am about 70 mi. north of you, near Lowville, and the Tug Hill. We normally have good snow-kiting up here, but not so good this past winter. I also spend a lot of time at Southwick Beach, on Lake Ontario.(buggying right now, but maybe on the water this summer) As for your kite, if you can hang it up and give it a good rinse with the hose, or a shower head, unless the dirt is really ground in, it should rinse right off. Then leave it hanging to dry. Stay safe and have fun! Bob

nice to see she fly's, too!

bobalooie57 - 15-5-2012 at 09:57 AM

Man, Thursday, 5/17, is looking like a potentially great day at Southwick. Wind west at 10-15, mostly sunny high fifties. I need a vac.day!

vanatta251 - 16-5-2012 at 07:19 PM

We took a trip up to southwick today, barely any wind. Not even enough to get up my Viper 2.6, but somehow my wifes much smaller prism snapshot got right up there. Then we went to fairhaven where they had 20+ mph winds. It was almost too much to handle! the beaches were big enough for our kites but are much too small for any buggying:wee:

bobalooie57 - 18-5-2012 at 07:03 AM

I spent about 8 hours at Southwick yesterday afternoon/evening. Had quite a good day with wind varying from west to southwest, at 10 to 15 mph. In 4 hrs of moving time, I covered 33.5 miles, with a top speed of 21.4 mph. I had a period where I felt somewhat underpowered on the 4.8M, but the 7.6M on the 2-line bar was scary, and the 7M on 17.5M Vector lines was also too much kite/lines for the spot.(hmmmmm, do I need a 6M??? hehehehe) Helmet cam batteries died about halfway into the session, I did manage to get a short clip of flying the 7.6M on the 2-line bar. Also got some separate shots/sunset run shots with a digi cam on a tripod, so will post the vid in the buggy section when I've got the editing done.

Kite buggy sunset

bobalooie57 - 18-5-2012 at 04:36 PM

Just one of the reasons this is such a great spot.

stillflyin - 19-5-2012 at 01:53 PM

Nice pic Bob, looks like I missed a good day, might have been to light for my kites tho, I need to build a 5M.
You-da-man, post some video soon .

snowspider - 24-5-2012 at 05:12 AM

Going to try Fort Ontario in Oswego Saturday 5-26-12. Several times I've heard that there is enough room there to ride a buggy , will post results.

bobalooie57 - 24-5-2012 at 05:40 AM

I went to a kite festival there a few years back, put on by NYKE. At the time I only had the Ozone Imp 3.5M Trainer, and had just got my first NASA wing. There's quite a bit of room there, but there were so many single liners up that day, I wouldn't have tried to buggy, if I had owned one at the time. What time do you think you'll be there, and would you like the company, if I can make it?

snowspider - 24-5-2012 at 08:01 AM

Going to be fishing in the morning and figure I'll be in the park around noon. If its breezy I'll stay 'till 4pm ,if not breezy I'll soak up some history and get back to fishing.

bobalooie57 - 24-5-2012 at 08:20 AM

Good luck with the fishing! Wind in Oswego does look kind of light for Sat. (W at about 3?) Southwick looking like SW at about 7. Might just plant the garden! I flew static last Sat. afternoon at Thompson Park in Watertown. Top of a hill site, there's almost always enough wind to fly. I was medium powered with the 4.8M on handles, and a couple of younger guys came around the block at the top(I was flying the field inside the block)on long boards. The first pulled right up when he saw me, saying "Whoa, that's the coolest thing I've seen today!" so I held out the handles and said, "you wanna try it?" "Seriously?" he replied, I said sure! Gave some short instructions, and handed him the handles. He got it off the ground, and quickly crashed, looking at me and saying"it's harder than it looks" Tried a few more times, got to feel the power, and was amazed by it, then had to leave, but with a big grin on his face! Anyway, catch something huge!

snowspider - 24-5-2012 at 08:51 AM

Big or small its all good if your catching something. Enjoy the weekend.

snowspider - 29-5-2012 at 05:17 AM

Fort Ontario was great for the history lessons but seemed lacking for kite spots. I assume I could fly in the area overlooking the lake but they had'nt mowed the lawn and it looked a bit small from my vantage up ontop of the fort. Will try again in a couple of weeks when they are offering a "1800's warfair engineering camp" , the kids can design trenches while I go fly.

snowspider - 18-8-2012 at 02:04 PM

Flew Southwick State Park last evening .....SWEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!! With lake levels low and early season storms moved sand into shore its "the most beach I have ever seen" said a local long time kite surfer/snowkiter. Little peninsulas of hard pack , up and down unevenness, some smooth fast stretches , sand castles , driftwood obstacles, some interesting driftwood artwork , a spectacular sunset , rock steady west winds at 15?mph, I was one happy boy!

bobalooie57 - 18-8-2012 at 04:33 PM

Didja make it all the way to 'the cut'? Did you see the "tiki bar"? Some folks were hanging out there when I made it down one day, and made me stop and sign the sign! I wish I had known you were going, I would have gone, too. I was there on Thurs. with light(10ish) west wind, and met another Bob from Seneca Lake area. He had HQ Hydra(the green one!), and a 5.5M NASA Star2, but no buggy or wheels. He said he has a crew from as far as Rochester that he kite boards with, and said they would all love it there at Southwick. I'm hoping to see them there sometime.

stillflyin - 18-8-2012 at 07:54 PM

Bummer sounds like I missed a good day. I am jonesin' to get back to Southwick. Spending the weekend putting a roof on my house. We have been real busy with the hang glide training and I hope to get time to buggy soon. Other than a couple short parking lot forays to CMac I haven't gotten much time with the kites. I know Bob from Seneca Lake, he lives in Clyde and kite boards on Seneca Lake. I instructed him in hang gliding a few years back. i have been watching for a good day to head up there but haven't checked in a few weeks, post when you are headed that way and with luck I can make it up.
I heard about a place on Cape cod, when the tide is out the beach is over a mile wide and 12 miles long, the sand is hard enough to drive out on. Gotta check it out some day.

snowspider - 18-8-2012 at 09:13 PM

Bob I knew there was predicted west winds so when I got home from work I checked Wind Mapper and sure enough dead on west at ,I think ,12mph. Nobody had any demands on me so I told them "I'm going flying, see ya!" Got on the beach at 5:30 and it was blowing pretty good. My 3.9 Viper was just right for everything I wanted to do. I actually figured I would see you there. I turned around just short of the cut so I missed out on the tiki bar , in that direction I did see an orange flag thing flying over an odd conglomeration of drift wood. I'll definatly be going back if the winds look that good again!

snowspider - 23-8-2012 at 05:35 AM

Southwick looks good for this evening (thursday), I'll be there approx 5pm.

bobalooie57 - 23-8-2012 at 04:46 PM

Darn Pat, I keep missing ya! I got invited today to go out on Lake Ontario on a 27 ft. Tri Hull Hobie. Jan B (from the Tug Hill Festival), Jackie P., Sally (the owner's wife) and myself got to sail from Clayton to Cape Vincent. They were going on across to Canada, but as I don't have a Passport/enhanced license, and I couldn't leave my dog over night, I jumped ship in Cape Vincent. We had to make several tacks, and I got to help with the hauling lines, etc. My first real sailing experience! We covered just over 24 miles with a max speed of 14 mph and an average moving speed of 8 mph. I went from there to Sackets Harbor Battlefield, and rode the buggy on the open field on the waterfront there. I hope you had as great a day as I had! Bob.

stillflyin - 23-8-2012 at 05:33 PM

So what do you guys think are optimum conditions for Southwick? It looks like it is a little south of due west to me, is that correct?

bobalooie57 - 23-8-2012 at 05:50 PM

WSW is great, but because you get a varying shoreline, some stretches are better, and each day is a little different, but you figure it out pretty quick, and hammer down on the stretches that work, I had a PB last week of 27.1 mph! (best that I have recorded, any way)

stillflyin - 23-8-2012 at 05:56 PM

What kite were you using to get your PB? Is the park road open all winter or not plowed when the snow flies?

bobalooie57 - 23-8-2012 at 06:14 PM

I was on the 7.6M NPW9 with 17.5M lines, and found a stretch and a gust that matched! I have been there in winter with no snow, the park is not staffed in winter, so I doubt if they plow it. When there is snow, I'm mostly up on Tug Hill somewhere, getting dragged on my face, but I"m determined if nothing else!

snowspider - 23-8-2012 at 07:50 PM

Very light ssw wind tonight , no good for the buggy but it was so nice out I stayed until sunset chatting with a fella. Turns out we are partners in crime , he had the dog police threaten him with a citation if he keeps walking his dog on a section of beach the park guy leaves but comes back as the parking police after a couple of minutes and says to me "did'nt I put a warning on your van last week." I'm in a different spot but this time I'm too close to the disabled parking area. He was about half pissed off at both of us. He did give me permission to park at the far end of the 15 minute parking area. We both kind of asked him how he spotted the dog and how did he remembered my van "well there's not a lot happening around here so you guys are the highlight of my week" Funny guy once he lightened up. I just hope its not 3 strikes and you're out!

bobalooie57 - 24-8-2012 at 06:39 AM

Looking ahead, the best looking forecast coming up looks to be for Tuesday, 8/28, with west wind all afternoon at about 14mph. I'm going to plan on being there, and will update as it gets closer. Bob

snowspider - 24-8-2012 at 08:18 AM

I'm begining to feel a bit labor bound , by next teusday it will probably be a full wind blown case of work-itis. I know I can get thru this, keep us posted Bob.

bobalooie57 - 27-8-2012 at 03:30 PM

Tomorrow's forecast has changed a bit, wind is predicted WNW at about 15mph. Looks even better for Thurs., at WSW 20-25!, and Friday, W at 15, but as I am not sure of my status Thurs/Fri, I will be at Southwick tomorrow around noon until...

snowspider - 27-8-2012 at 05:50 PM

I can't come tomorrow and the princess will be using the van at times for school , wed ,thurs ,fri look good , I'll be there one of those days but I'm back to catch as catch can.

bobalooie57 - 27-8-2012 at 06:05 PM

 The more into fall, the better winds/less crowds too! We'll click one of these times!

bobalooie57 - 29-8-2012 at 07:40 AM

So I spent yesterday afternoon at the beach with wind from the northwest at 10-15 mph. I walked in with all my gear as far as the first boardwalk, and set up, then realized I left my harness in the truck. Oh well, not walking all the way back for it. Wind direction was not the best, and though the 4.8M NPW was plenty of kite heading south, the upwind slog was a lot of work, so I switched to the 7M NPW9 on 10M lines, which made the upwind run a little faster, but still threatened to rip my arms off at times! I managed to do 15 miles(I've easily doubled that with the harness, so I should have gone back for it!) with a top speed of 23.7 mph, before my arms gave up. Beach was in great shape, wide as it has been this year, and not very many people. Tomorrow looks great with WSW wind at 17-23! I'll know later today if I will be able to make it tomorrow.

EDIT: hopefully this is a link to some pic's I took yesterday.

bobalooie57 - 29-8-2012 at 12:56 PM

Looks like I'm gonna be at the beach again tomorrow around noon 'til ...

stillflyin - 29-8-2012 at 01:28 PM

Bob any chance you will be there on Friday? Not sure I can make it tomorrow.

bobalooie57 - 29-8-2012 at 02:30 PM

Friday looks about the same for wind, so if you think you can make it, I'll put off my day until then. I would much rather have company.

bobalooie57 - 30-8-2012 at 04:31 AM

Well, looking at tomorrow(Fri.), it might be T-storms, so I'm going today, around noon, and if no rain tomorrow, I'll go back!

stillflyin - 30-8-2012 at 06:16 AM

Anyone else having problems with this thread? It says there are 3 pages but when you click on page 3 it takes you back to page 1. I will see if there is a place to report a problem to the administrator.

Bob, I saw you posted this am but can't get to it to read it. I am hoping to get out of work early enough to be up there by mid afternoon.

bobalooie57 - 30-8-2012 at 06:43 AM

Sounds great, I'll be set up south of the beach front camping area, depending on how many people there are, usually around the first boardwalk across the dunes.

stillflyin - 30-8-2012 at 06:55 AM

Thanks Bob, that worked like a charm. So far everything is quiet at work so I am looking good to be there mid afternoon.

snowspider - 30-8-2012 at 08:24 AM

I'll be there tonight for sure and maybe fri.

bobalooie57 - 30-8-2012 at 08:09 PM

Man, what a day! 23 miles, 28.6 MPH! snowspider and stillflyin from the forum, and also Bob and Fran, from the Saranac Lake area, and Steve and George from the Ithaca area all hangin' out, it seemed like a mini-event! I got there around noon, and had the best wind, though SW all day, it started out 15-G20, then picked up to 20-G25, then started dropping off around 3 or so, after Rick arrived. Steve and George were out on the water while the wind was up, and it turned out that Bob and friends had been up at Black Pond (a few miles N of here) kiteboarding, and Bob brought his 5.5M NASA Star II out and they all had a turn with RicS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s buggy. Pat arrived as the wind was really dropping off, and unfortunately his daughter had 'cleaned' out the van, and Pat only brought one of his smaller foils, as the forecast had been for 15-20 through evening. He and the boys had some fun in the lake, anyway. I hope Rick got some video, I did, but haven't even looked at it yet. I'll post it when I get something together.

stillflyin - 31-8-2012 at 08:03 AM

It was fun, wish I had gotten there a little earlier tho. I did get video and stills but got home to late to look at them. I will post them soon. Good seeing everyone, I hope to get back up there soon.

bobalooie57 - 31-8-2012 at 08:24 AM

Looking at todays forecast! :o NOAA says by 6 pm wind should be west at 17 -g32! I'm pretty sure some of the guys stayed last night, so they'll be out rocking the lake in that. I think I have to go back...

stillflyin - 3-9-2012 at 06:17 PM

Bob, check out the gallery I uploaded a picture from last week you might like, it is titled Southwick sunset. If you want a better version I can send it direct to you. U2U me where you want it sent.

bobalooie57 - 3-9-2012 at 08:06 PM

 Rick, that came out nice! I went back on Friday, wind didn't get near the predicted 17 - G33, but at around 6 pm it came in steady from the west at about 12mph, and I buggied until after dark, under the "blue" moon! I did a pass up by the big aspen at the point by the concession stand, and a teen came running down to the beach, applauding! As one of the last beach goers were packing up, the lady said "How long are you gonna keep that up?" and I replied " 'Til the wind dies, or my arms fall off, whichever comes first!" Riding in the moonlight is nice, but the holes dug by the kids are hard to see! U2U to you with my e-mail. Bob

bobalooie57 - 14-9-2012 at 06:25 AM

It's looking fair tomorrow afternoon at Southwick, with west wind around 10mph. I'll probably be there around noon. Here's to stillflyin (Rick) for a nice pic of the fun!

stillflyin - 20-9-2012 at 08:42 AM

strong W wind on Sunday, chance of rain, looks good to me, anyone thinking about going to Southwick?

I'm going to try to be there by noon on Sunday.

I talked to Bob from Seneca Lake and he is shooting for noon also. If the forecast holds I will be there asap depending on how soon I can skate out of home in the am.

Conditions for Saturday look like west wind at 25-30 mph, but with a chance of rain. I plan on being at Southwick somewhere around noon. I'm hoping to get some quality time with the 2M Toxic.

Have a blast and be safe, I have a Ski Patrol refresher all day Sat so I can't come out and play. Bummer.

So I went to Southwick today, when I got there the wind was about 15-g25, so I put up the 2M Toxic on 17.5M lines. It's been a while since I've flown this one, but I quickly remembered how fast this kite will accelerate you in a good wind. Within a few yards of taking off, I hit my highest speed of the day, which was only 24 mph, but that was only due to my lack of hooj ones. The rest of the time I spent with that kite was just practicing keeping the kite, and my speed under control. After a short time of just holding on, I switched out to the 2.4M NPW5, which I thought would be more friendly as it is on just 10M lines, but it was also quite overpowered, as wind gusts had picked up to about 35mph! I came close to getting flopped again, so I called it a day after just 40 min. of riding, covering 6.5 mi., with an average moving speed of 12.6mph.

Didn't do any better in Rochester today, I got out of class a little early and met John at CMac parking. The wind was up and down, had the NPW 4.8 out and it would go from pulling like a freight train to laying dead on the ground and everything in between. Went till almost dark and it was getting better as we packed up.

Pretty breezy indeed yesterday. Flew my 7.5 Apex in the park for 1/2 an hour and was being lifted with the kite parked at zenith fully depowered. Be careful out there.

anyone get up to Southwick lately? I was at CMac on the asphalt on Saturday in gusty west winds and snow squalls, longing for some laminar air. The 4.7m NPW was perfect till the 30+mph gusts came through then it got a little ugly but other than a few tangled lines no damage done.
