Power Kite Forum

So what's in a name?...RESURRECTED

soliver - 4-4-2012 at 10:21 PM

The old (original) bit: (circa 2012)

No, I'm not Shakespeare, but...

I've been on this forum for several months now, and prior to me joining, I've never done anything even remotely familiar with my computer,... Not a fan of facecrack, twitter, or any other online social media (i did join myspace and they practically shut down the next day... call me a late-comer)... anywho, I digress...

So from time to time I find myself pondering a much less kite-worthy topic while reading up on the forum... "what's with that guy's PKF name????"

Mine is boring, and probably obvious first name: Spencer, Last name: Oliver ... hence: soliver. I decided to go easy for my own sake,... I'm a part time Master's student on an online school and it is also my login for that, go figure.

I know some of you are boring like me, but some of you are less obvious. So,... what the deal with your PKF name,... I wanna hear from guys like Kamikuza??? mougl??? feyd??? (just to name a few) what's up with that man? What's the story that made you choose that? Inquiring minds want to know.

THE NEW BIT: (circa 2014)

There've been several new folks come in since this thread lost its momentum, so let's resurrect it and carry on with why your name is your name?

arkay - 4-4-2012 at 10:40 PM

This one time at band camp we... really, I never went to band camp.

arkay (are-kay) used to be RK... I got fancy and spelled it out because I'm all sophisticated and such. RK is the short form of... well that doesn't much matter now :) But it was part of a theme of nicknames from high school and they all stuck for a long while, I just decided to make it fancier over time.

ragden - 5-4-2012 at 04:50 AM

There was a previous thread on this same topic (might even have been called the same thing), I would be willing to bet that Indigo-Wolf can pull it up for you (I have no clue where it is).

Been using this name for years in various games and decided for consistency across forums, so I just use the same name. I pulled this name from a short story I wrote ages ago. Seemed like a nicely unusual name for a character, so I just stuck with it...

mougl - 5-4-2012 at 04:58 AM

What I can tell you is the the g is silent. (móo-ul)

The origin of the name is still classified information and could be considered a threat to national kite security.

nocando - 5-4-2012 at 05:07 AM

Mine is because I no can do

shehatesmyhobbies - 5-4-2012 at 05:50 AM

I think mine is pretty self explanitory! But here goes anyway, when I got into kiting, I also had 4 gas r/c trucks, 6 gas r/c airplanes, street bikes, four wheelers, surfboards, then came the kites, first a couple in the corner, then a few more, then a buggy in the shed, then two buggies in the shed, finally she told me to pick something and get rid of the rest. she hated all my hobby stuff all over the house and yard! I sold all my r/c stuff, sold off the motorcycles, fourwheelers, surfboards, all the rest. Once I started to fly the power kites, and ride buggies, that was it, that is all I needed!

P.S. I did pick up a couple little r/c helicopters that me and the kids fly not the same, but still fun!

WELDNGOD - 5-4-2012 at 05:50 AM

Pretty obvious I would think.

Kober - 5-4-2012 at 05:52 AM

In 80's I have small group making games on Atari, Commodore and ZX Spectrum computers. I name it Cobra Soft . After a while calling me Cobra spelling was changed to Kobra because my name starts with K ( Konrad ) then someone begin Kober thing and its like that since I was 16. My compony name is Kober Enterprises right now .... lol After over 20 years I think that nickname will stay with me for a while ......

MyAikenCheeks - 5-4-2012 at 06:38 AM

What's in a name???
Well...
I'm from Aiken, South Carolina (so is pokitetrash)
My last name is Cheek.
I'm 65 years old and everything on and in and around my body hurts!!!!

MyAikenCheeks

Same  I'm so boring.

shortlineflyer - 5-4-2012 at 07:39 AM

I live in northern Virginia and there are alot of light wind conditions. i started out flying stunt kites and revs and used short lines (usually 65 ft) so i could fly in light wind conditions. I also like that the kite moves faster with short lines

snowspider - 5-4-2012 at 07:55 AM

I was building this funky contraption so I could snowkite while sitting down, once I figured out it was going to work I said to my guys "we've got to name this thing". My older boy looked at me like I've got nine heads and walked away. My little guy said "looks like a snowspider to me dad" SHABAMM!

Feyd - 5-4-2012 at 08:40 AM

Feyd was my dog. The best 3 legged pit bull/rotty mix you would have ever meet.

Sweetest dog I've ever known. She's been gone 3yrs and I'm still getting tears in my eyes as I type this.

shaggs2riches - 5-4-2012 at 10:44 AM

Long sort of story but I'll try to sum it up:

When I was young I really liked Scooby Doo. (still will watch it with my kids any day). When I was 14 I wanted badly to grow a bad-ass Goatee but could only grow a few chin hairs here and there. My family started calling me Shaggy because of my chin hairs and past love of Scooby Doo.

The name stuck, even now the odd person still calls me that. When I worked at McDonalds I won employee of the month and the plaque was addressed to "Shaggy". Had a name tag made that said it and a hat embroidered Shaggy on the back. One of my managers started to call me Shaggs2riches and soon other people called me that. Needless to stay I started using that handle on forums and games and have been ever since. I once wanted to be a rapper and was gonna call my group "Shaggs2riches and the Nash Projects." Nash is my middle name and what my father usually calls me.

HMMMMMM... curiosity is peaked,...

nicely done,... keeping the mystery alive!!!

@ brother Cheezy,... very clever

awindofchange - 5-4-2012 at 11:26 AM

Mine is pretty self explanatory as well. :)

This way when people read the posts from me, they know that I am from a kite shop as well and can weigh that info in with the advice given. I always try to be as unbiased as possible, but I do have my favorites :)

g00fba11 - 5-4-2012 at 01:49 PM

Just ask someone that knows me.....

Pretty self explanatory....

Drewculous - 5-4-2012 at 03:46 PM

Well in high school I ran with a lot of peeps... Good friends with very few, but well liked by many for my uncanny ability to manipulate all things school related... favors for favors lmao!!

I was one of the few people that could walk down the hall, slap hands with the vatos, the preps, the stoners, and the nerds, lol the teachers

Anyway one such vato/stoner was completely toasted in an a&p class I was basically carrying him through, and one day he couldnt say "andrew".... So I start laughing... Gets worse, he cant say "drew"... So he starts laughing, the teacher, oblivious to his intoxication, thinks the whole situation is hilarious.... Well he finally gets "pudo drewculous" out... And so help me, ive never seen anyone laugh so hard... Carlos had to leave the class early because he couldnt stop laughing... That dude laughed for 3weeks straight because he thought "pudo drewculous" was the funniest thing to say and hear... It stuck

current variations include drewlicious, drewculii, drewbo, and pudo

soliver - 5-4-2012 at 03:53 PM

drew,... I figured "drewculuos" was just a cool variation of your name... good story

BTW... what the heck is a vato?

Drewculous - 5-4-2012 at 04:00 PM

mougl - 5-4-2012 at 04:12 PM

service409 - 5-4-2012 at 06:55 PM

Mine started out creating an eBay user name, my original attempt was taken so I kept changing this and that until it came to this. It took like half an hour of rejections so when they finally accepted one I just let it be. Use it on computer stuff, just easier. Has no significant meaning at all.

pbc - 5-4-2012 at 07:07 PM

Well, I am boring. My brother got into computers before I did and he said one day, "If you get to pick your username make sure it's easy to type 'cause you'll be typing it a lot." His username was his initials, so 26 years ago when given the chance I went with mine.

I work at a big university (10 points if you can figure it out) where for a very long time students had total latitude in selecting their usernames. So they'd pick cool stuff like BigSexxy11 or DrLove. Years later some of these students end up working for the university and their work-inappropriate usernames follow them to their first job. It's kind of hard to change your username so they have to deal with the less-than-professional name or deal with the colossal pain that is the username change. One of my coworkers has a pretty bad one and we rib him pretty much any chance we can get.

Philip

Kamikuza - 5-4-2012 at 07:29 PM

Well... when I first got on ICQ, I chose "Kamikaze Soul Rider" as a username cos we'd just started inline skating and soul grinds were my signature move
For some odd reason, my mate Jed kept calling me "kooz" as in - "Hey kooz you want a beer?" or "Aw don't be such a kooza"... so that kinda stuck too. But Kooz wasn't a unique username for forums etc so I mixed up my old nick and the new one... and bastardized the spelling a bit so it could (kinda, at a stretch) be read as a Japanese mish-mash word... I hate having to explain it and which I'd gone with something simple like "Kev"

My friends and I were not so nice teens. We used to steal or "mougl" things regularly just to see if we would get away with it. Any time we did anything slick, we mougled. If someone got something over on you, you had been mougled. Mougl can be used to describe various situations. The name just kind of stuck.

Jaymz - 5-4-2012 at 09:18 PM

Jaymz...just an odd way to spell my real name, James.

Quiz: Which famous James spells their name Jaymz?

Roadkyllphil - 6-4-2012 at 07:43 AM

I started making beef jerky years ago, my friends said "You need a name people will remember" So I came up with Roadkyll. Still make jerky but the name is now associated with my silkscreen business, and I get calls all the time "saw your name, I'll never forget it" or "The only name I could remember was "Roadkyll"

rocfighter - 6-4-2012 at 09:09 AM

I have been flying kites most of my life. I have been competing in Rokkaku battles at festivals for years, I even made all my own kites. So I became Rocfighter, I still enjoy the battles but power is my favorate.

hiaguy - 6-4-2012 at 09:21 AM

Way back when, we had friends John and Eliz Taylor. My wife nicknamed them the JETs. They returned the favour; my wife and I became the HIAs. Its just stuck since then. (Strangely enough, she doesn't like being called hiagal.)

canuck - 6-4-2012 at 11:27 AM

canuck is a slang term for Canadians - and I am Made in Canada eh. :bigok:

I also grew up in Vancouver BC and always hope the Canucks will bring the Stanley Cup home - but they seem to die in the playoffs.

hiaguy - 6-4-2012 at 01:37 PM

I'm also from the land of "Eh". The JETs (earlier post) lived in Kerrisdale.
Spent 20 years supporting the Canucks but now I'm back in the land of the Leafs. Hey, at least you're in the playoffs. I was 7 the last time LeafNation won.

RockinYotes - 6-4-2012 at 02:05 PM

Yotes is a nickname I picked up in high school (last name is Yates, someone photoshopped my face onto an oatmeal box). Rockin' Yotes is what I call my solo rockabilly act.

Bladerunner - 13-4-2012 at 04:23 PM

I joined this forum as " Snowbird " because snow kiting was my #1 stoke and I am willing to travel for it.
It soon became clear I was NOT going to get enough time on the snow to live up to the name.
I find I get out most often on the blades and like to promote the style so Bladerunner seemed a more accurate name.

bobalooie57 - 13-4-2012 at 08:32 PM

bobalooie - actually he spelled it BabaLooey, was sidekick to Quick Draw McGraw, who was a Hanna - Barbera cartoon character when I was a kid. My name is bob, and my last name sounds a little like looie, so some friends started calling me that way back when. 57 is the year of my birth.

You could copy and paste soliver's first post here and that's exactly how I came up with mine. S for sean and last name sayre. I haven't done any other forum or social media either. So, pretty boring screen name but I'm good with that.

soliver - 2-11-2014 at 11:22 AM

I had fun reading through this and re-familiarizing myself with the stories.

soliver - 2-11-2014 at 03:21 PM

here's lookin to you 3shot?!?!

AudereEng - 2-11-2014 at 04:25 PM

AudereEng is a combination:

Audere:
Latin Verb
audēre present active infinitive of audeō
1."to dare, to venture, to risk"
2.(poetic) "to be eager for battle

Eng: short for engineering
