Dynamic soaring (just wind power) 468 MPH

not kites but interesting nonethless.
i stumbled onto this Dynamic Soaring topic when they were trying to break 400 MPH. now it looks like they are going for 500 MPH.
wow. no links but plenty of you tube stuff.

Wasn't quite sure what you meant by "dynamic soaring"

- large, motorless R/C model gliders on those windy western hillsides!

I went to a local (flat field) meet up years ago for those things - launched by a wench slingshot thingie. They weren't doing anywhere near those speeds. But when one passed overhead, you KNEW it! :o Those things could kill you!

(You can see the plane much better in this nearer, slower speed one than in the distant, faster shots.)

So it catches the wind coming over the hill, and comes back in the wind-shadow of the hill?
