Flying rope thing at WBB Saturday

MikeDobbs - 24-4-2012 at 08:06 AM

Hey everyone- remember that cool flying rope thing that was at the bash on Saturday? The guy who owned it told me the name of the person who made it, but I forgot in all the excitement.

If anyone knows who's it was, or who made it, or if the guy who had it there is reading this I would like to find out more about them.

Thanks!

Was it a Jim Mallos SkyBow

I know it was very cool and loud the way the wind was howling. Could hear it a block and a half away! I want one!

MikeDobbs - 24-4-2012 at 08:59 AM

Yep that's it- That thing was wicked cool... think I'll get one for our local events

doneski - 24-4-2012 at 09:42 AM

Nice kite but FINALLY I get to see a picture of the dunes everyone was talking about!!

chris - 24-4-2012 at 09:54 AM

I'm my book, that was noise pollution.

bigkid - 24-4-2012 at 10:00 AM

where do you get them?

Chris,
if they are made with thinner, and thicker material I think they can be tuned to play a song or something like those damn wind-chimes. ops, did I say that out loud? same on me.:embarrased:

Hmmmm- you bring up a good point, it was noisy. But it was also really cool : )

Perhaps a smaller version might not be so loud?

Jens, the owner of the ribbon, described the noise it made as an effective tourist repellant.

rocfighter - 24-4-2012 at 12:05 PM

As a repellant it seemed to work well. Not a lot of tourests in that area!!
Crashthenswim owned it. I thought it was bretty cool myself. And I liked the changes as the wind grew and ebbed. Sounded like it was shifting gears!!

That's pretty much the product description.

"The aerodynamic forces always act nearly at right angles to the ribbon face, but the ribbon is constantly turning. This produces a rapidly varying reaction against the air ---sound is the natural result. Since the ribbon has two faces, the frequency of the sound is twice the spin rate.

A skybow flying well makes a howling sound reminiscent of the sound of high wind in a pine woods, a skybow that is not entirely steady sounds like a motorcyle race, with repeated accelerations and sudden downshifts of pitch.

Loudness increases drastically with wind speed. At 20 mph (32 km/hr) the curious have been drawn from a quarter-mile (400m) away. The sound is very directional, with a quiet spot near the fliers and directly behind them. "

OK, so, for someone that couldn't come and didn't saw it (what looks to be cool..), anyone take any videos of this thing, or know what's it's name, so I can watch it too ?? looks pretty cool...

Until someone posts Bash footage... might want to turn down the speakers a bit.... the music is a little.... "cruise ship chic"

Cool, thanks guys for the info. Interesting concept, yet for that cost, I can see another kite in my future.. :-)

Crash then swim - 28-4-2012 at 06:17 PM

Sorry I'm late to this party. Yes, it was mine and it was a Mueller SkyBow. They are all hand made and hand sewn, hence the price of about $100 to $200. I have several of them and they can be linked together to make a huge arch or they can all be flown off of the same attachment point and they will spread out. Sorry Chris, for the "noise pollution" I would not have put it up if I'd know it was bothering the guys flying on the beach. I like it because of the physics aspect and it always seems to bring people over to chat about it. :wee:

joecat - 29-4-2012 at 07:16 AM

I thought it was cool......

WELDNGOD - 29-4-2012 at 08:47 AM

I want!:ninja:

rocfighter - 30-4-2012 at 06:19 AM

I bet if we all get one we can have them end to end on the beach. Then it will be noise polution. But not nearly as bad as the power washer at the hotel!!

NeilDeans7 - 30-4-2012 at 07:45 AM

I'm with Chris. It was cool for the first few minutes but then...

Although the physics of the SkyBow are VERY cool, so is the physics of an atomic bomb. Have you noticed that MOST of the SkyBow videos have music and not the actual noise it creates?

Too bad, there is not a volume control for it.

But...then again I'm sure some people feel the same when I play my Highland Bagpipes; 120db, 9 notes, no sharps, no flats.

Drewculous - 30-4-2012 at 08:02 AM

i wanna see one of these things lol!

If youve seen my truck... noise pollution is my thing

JIBE maybe?

Kober - 4-5-2012 at 01:36 PM

noise pollution ..... Yes ....
cool ...... Yes Yes Yes .....

..... Its unique concept and love the way it looks ...... I was thinking noise was coming from some machine on one of the hotels ..... like that power washer that was working non stop .... after I realize that noise come from that thing it cut cool factor a bit ..... anyhow ..... It was nice addition that make event look like event ......

stevep - 4-5-2012 at 02:07 PM
