PL Navigator TS bar safety line??

zero gee - 4-6-2012 at 10:35 PM

A previous picture looked like the mini 5th line passed through the chickenloop, then the bar, throught the rigging, and attaches to a frontline (like kite span away).

Anyone have any info and pictures on how this mini 5th line connects to a front line for the new Navigator bars? If this is not the case, can you describe what is used to flag the kite?

Thanks.

there are 2 new bars one for LEI with front lines (both) and the P2 with the mini front line to one side.

everything goes thru the center even thru the stopper ball thing.

the mini front line thing ..the front lines are in segments and it attaches in the loop at the first segment from the bar. they used a bungee (the rest is regular line about 2/3) segment for trim compensation, its not so smooth thru the stopper thing when resting. it tends to bunch and with tension on the line it feeds thru fine but at slack it bunches up, def would use regular line. when deployed works just like a flag line. the reset with tension is hindered slightly by the bungee. it might the type of bungee fluffy with solid core stuff that give it this tendency.

the segments look to be about 10m...you could just add a small ring to a full front line at same position and be fine.

so just like a regular front line flag , it is side specific for smooth lay down.

i really like the bar very well done all they way around . the bungee thing is minor preference i would change

I really like the new bar. It seems very well made. I haven't looked really closely at the attachment of the flag line. If that line is in segments it would help with line replacement someday if original isn't available. I do lots of downturns and upwind turns and love being able to spin my bar to sort everything out after the turn with no twists anywhere.

The current design is (I think) to allow the bar to pass over the flag line attachment. It would require some thought about how far away to place the ring so the kite would flag properly since the bar couldn't pass over the ring.

and there is a keeper around the trim cleat area and the line actually angles from there, not at the frontline attachment point above the trim.

indeed bob the spin, the bar all good . the bar center has the PL icon stamped into the alloy and just feels like a million bucks, beefy loop and swivel with ALL in the center safety. not sure of the sizes (dim) available. medium to small would be my choice.

this does not show the actual attachment point up the frontline at the first segment junction but has a look at the safety line which angling off lower at the trim keeper ring. not sure where in the vid is best first half is less fog. it is the TS NAVIGATOR at work!

Looks like they've changed the setup with the cam-cleat too - looks much cleaner! any close-up pics around?

I might get a chance to unroll my newly arrived large Nav tomorrow and take some detailed pics of the bar, and 5th line attachment.

Well, I think I rigged up a similar safety line on my new Zeeko bar using their mini 5th line. The lines on the bar are setup with a "Y" split with a single line to the bar. The safety line goes to a left front line sliding ring type of safety.

I removed that stopper ring and tied the left front line to the same fixed ring as the right front line. I added an extension to the safety line and tied that to the left front line with a prussic knot. The total length should allow both my kites to flag out (should be plenty to flag out the big kite). This safety line passes through the works (including chickenloop swivel) without snagging. However, once that front line bottoms out from it's fixed point further up at the "Y" split the prussic knot on the safety line does not make it to the bar. The rest of the nessessary distance to flag the kite has to come from the bars momentum to reach (or pass) the prussic knot (about 1.5m).

I used a piece of flying line for the extension. That might wear out too easy passing though that swivel??

I only tested it in ground simulations to get the length right and check for snags.. Need to proceed with a light wind session.
