Heavy land boarding needing advice on kite

psyza - 29-6-2012 at 12:52 AM

Hi Guys,

Great forum, hope you can give me some advice. I've currently got a 3m Flow that I've been flying for the past 8 months. About 3 months ago I bought a Trampa landboard and have been playing around with that.

I'm comfortable flying the 3m Flow in most conditions, but to get me moving on the board I have to work the kite really really hard or go out when the wind speed is a bit too high and gusty for me.

I'm about 120kg and will mostly be land boarding inland. I'm looking for my next kite. Initially I thought of getting a Frenzy, but I think I want another 4 line fx bridle before I go depower and a harness.

What do you guys think of the Method? Would you guys go for the 5m or 6.5 taking my weight into account and this being my low wind kite?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Simon

you are ready for a depower mate. take the plunge and buy yourself an arc (15/16m)

Carl knows what he is talking about. He's got awesome videos of him doing what you want to do. check them out.

I would say go to depower ! It isn't as big a jump as you think and the direction you want to go.

If you are a big guy get at least an 8 or 9m ( 10 if your winds are usually under 20kts ) or you will just have a depower that you need to take out in strong winds.

at 264#s, you are going to need a 10m depower. My goto kite most of the time (when the winds are 10 - 20mph) is my 10m and since you have more than 100#s on me in weight, that's the smallest size I'd recommend you go with. Then maybe you move up to a 15m ish kite and down to a 7m ish kite if staying in the depower foil family.

Thank you everyone for your advice so far you've got me convinced to go depower. From the reviews I've read so far I'm looking at the 15m Charger or a 13m Frenzy. Which would you go for? Or is this a personal preference thing?

The majority of people riding landboards go depower. I only know of a few that won't but my bet is you will. I think if you buy another fixed bridle kite it will eventually just sit in the gear bag while you are flying your depower kites.

What are your average wind speeds? That will help us recommend a kite. My most frequently used kite was my 11m. On grass I can get going at about 12-13 mph at 205lbs. On the beach I can ride in much less, maybe 8mph. I fly my 19m just as much now because I have lots of days that are lower wind.

If you buy a 7-8m depower you will need almost as much wind as your 3m needs to roll. If it is too windy for my 8 I can still fly my 3m for a while but sometimes my 2m.

Your best bet though is to meet up with local flyiers and work with them to keep you safe and see what sizes they are using.

both sound like good choices depending on your winds speeds. The Charger can be used on water too if you decide to try that too.

On wind range I would say 10 - 20 knots

You definately will need to work your way up to a 13m or 15m in the higher winds but 10 would be a perfect place to start.

I am selling my 15m Charger at what I consider an extremely good price.

Looks like my 14m Eskimo is at the post office so I am keen to see the Charger go !

That said, the 15m Synergy on here is an amazing deal. I am sticking with my Synergy due to it's forgiving nature. It is probably a better choice as an intro to arcs ?
