Harness for 4 line kite?

aleitner - 23-7-2012 at 07:34 AM

Hi,

I have a 4 line kite (magma 4, comes with two handles, not a bar) and I use it just to have fun on the field (and maybe on the beach during vacations, but I have not tried this yet).

While this is lots of fun, the kite has quite a pull and strains my arms. Does it make sense for this kind of fun kiting to use a harness? I have one for Windsurfing (legs+waist). I have seen there are handle bars for 4 line kites. (E.g. this one: http://www.kite-style.ch/ksps/Zubehoer/Handles--Bar/4-Leiner...)

Can I connect this to my Windsurf harness? How safe is this to use? Is there an emergency mechanism similar to the kite killers I currently use?

I assume a depower kite doesn't make sense unless I want to do use it to be pulled on some kind of vehicle, right?

Many thanks in advance,
Andreas

You could make a strop. Go to http://www.gofirecrest.com/ , click on miscellaneous, then click safety. It has plans on how to make a quick release strop. enjoy

Snake, the quick release shackle in those pictures will not necessarily release under load. They are not designed to. Do not use them!!!!

You don't need to buy a bar to hook in. You can attach some rope to the tops of your handles creating a " strop ".

A simple strop and hook style spreader bar only gives you pushing out as a safety. Hard to do when fully loaded . This is how I ride.

The trick is to unhook when you are pushing it and hook in to rest up / walk back upwind. Doing so will inrease your fly time dramatically.

I don't get why it wouldn't.

The hasp can put enough pressure on the pin to stop it from pulling out and releasing the hasp. That type of shackle is used for halyards, the line attached to the top of the sail. It is unlikely that you would ever have to release it underload, unless you at the top of the mast..
For a shackle designed to release under load, you want a Wichard shackle.
Search the forum, you will see the topic has come up before.
