Questions on a larger kite.

Hello all,

Right now I have a 3.5m HQ Rush Pro. I love it and will soon have a scrub psycho arriving in the mail. I have a feeling that shortly after I have gone mb-ing around with my 3.5 I will want a larger kite.
Here are some questions I have regarding the above situation: First off, what should the prereq.s be for flying a larger, say, 6-7m. I already feel comfortable in high winds with my 3.5 and a buddies 5.0. Also, what winds (mph) should I be wary of with such a large kite. Thanks,

Ryan

kite size and wind speed all come down to your skill level. There is no set guide line to follow. A experienced pilot may feel comfortable with a 5m kite in 20 mph where a newer pilot is scared to death at 15 mph. It also depends on the model kite. Some kites are more mellow, where others are extreme.
Once you get moving on the board you will be able to hold down more power than if you were flying static. You will quickly find your rush will be underpowered unless you are in 20 mph + winds ... or on extreme hard pack or pavement. Surface conditions will play as big a part in kite sizing as the wind conditions.

I've flown many stunt kites before (about a year) so controlling the kite is pretty easy. With the board I will just need to figure out how where the kite is effects the movement. I feel like after I have that down, a 6 or 7m will be perfect because here most days are ~10mph with a 15-20mph day about every week or two. I guess I'll just wait until my board gets here then go from there.

what is your riding surface?

soccer fields mostly at the moment. Unless it is after rain it is not squishy. basically back yard grass style.

yep you will need a bigger kite sooner than later. 20 mph the rush will probably get you going, but in 10 - 15mph I doubt it. You can always try and if it doesn't work then you know you need bigger for sure :)

Would a 6m be good or should I go 7m to be "safe".

depends on the kite. what kite are you thinking of?

Here are the ones I am looking at:
Gin Eskimo 6m
Ozone Method 6.5m
HQ Beamer 7.0m
Elliot Lexx 6.6m
