anyone up for a post labor day meet up at JI for some surf and turf? Winds should be a bit more east-north-eastie for the buggy folks which works great on the water as well. The weekend of the 14th thru the 16th look great on the tide schedule............I havent buggied since JIBE and need to get back on it before WBBB (dont want to embarass myself).........:o::rolleyes:

I have clearance from the tower and have blocked off 9/14 - 9/16 on my calendar.

I was already contemplating a kiting weekend at St. Augustine, but Jekyll should be just as good after Labor day. The peeps should be gone by then.

My wife is toting me to a Jane Austin book fair Labor Day weekend. Says I have to go with her and smile all week end! Meet all her online book club peeps.
I'm thrilled. :frog:
A week end at J.I. will be sweet revenge!
Count me there. Hellooooo Plovers.
I need to embarrass my self some more.
Practice makes perfect.

pbc - 6-9-2012 at 05:20 AM

I'm still in for some buggy time. I have my P2 15m if the winds are light and the Scorps if otherwise. Either way a good time is in the forecast. I'm looking forward to some longs runs to the north when the tide is all the way out so we can go all the way up to the north end.

Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap hotel? I need to reserve a room for Friday and Saturday nights. Please no funny smells.

Microtel was nice and clean when we stayed there last. Might still be a nice place for a good price.

wiers - 6-9-2012 at 10:15 PM

I'll be in the area again for work and will try to come out. However, I wont have a buggy etc. But would enjoy seeing it done, since I have only seen video's. At this point I plan on bringing my Viper s 3.9 and twister iir 5.6. Maybe this time it wont be 95-105 degrees and be a little cooler for my Washington State blood.

Yes all of the hotels just west of exit 29- Microtel, Econolodge and Super 8 are run by the same owners. Generally clean and neat and well managed with decent pricing including breakfast and WiFi. For this and my other job at the Seafarer's Center we have had a lot of people go through there and never a complaint but a lot of positive remarks and compliments.

Also same for the Hampton Inn and Suites just to the east of the highway. different owners but good reviews.

Looking forward to seeing the gang!!!

Forecast looking nice ENE and or E with low tides and winds in the mid teens will mean great buggy runs and big kite water sessions...............:shocked2:

If the winds get up I do have a couple 3m fixed bridles available or the 5m Waroo for the buggy crowd. Need to fly the 4m Bego too.............

My apologies to all........chemo kicked my butt starting Wed and I just literally got out of bed.......good winds this weekend and hope to see you all very soon.......

pbc - 14-9-2012 at 07:55 PM

no worries. when you didn't show I wondered if the chemo had gotten the better of you. come if you can but dont sweat it if you can't.

Conditions were great today. Nick learned how to aaccelerate from a stop to cruising speed on a broad reach. we put this too good use on some blazing fast down wind runs.

met Rob and Darrin on the beach today. hope folks can join us tomorrow

acampbell - 15-9-2012 at 09:18 AM

I'm stuck at work today same as yesterday but will be out tomorrow for a while until about 3 pm. I have been noticing the east winds and I hope they are serving you well

i'm there in spirit guys. wish I couldve joined you. I hope you were riding powered up!

pbc - 16-9-2012 at 07:23 PM

On Friday we were lit! The crowds were thin while the wind was strong out of the NE. On the broad reach to the southern water tower the bugs were catching air at the top of every swale. I had one hand on the bar steering and leaning on the power while the other was handing onto the side rail with a death grip. I'm sure I beat my personal best at Jekyll on those runs.

We tried to go north to Driftwood Beach on Saturday but it was a bit too technical to squeeze through the crowds on the narrow beach with the big dog barking at my kite. We got while the getting was good and played a little further south.

Friday I got to ride my 15m Phantom 2 most of the day. It's so easy to handle in every respect. I sure wish it could have finished out the day for me but in a brief moment of mid-air inversion I spotted a splash of white in the middle of the black back side. I landed it to find a three in slice in the backside. Nick and I were dumbfounded. The kite had barely been on the ground and only on the open beach. I figure it must have found a barnacle on one of the many horse shoe crabs that littered the beach. I relaunched, flew it back to camp, and packed it. It'll be repair time next weekend.

Here are some photos from the weekend. Most of them are from a walk to the south end Saturday morning. It's worth the trip--even on foot.

Fun trip! Friday was perfect conditions -- I don't think I've ever sped along so fast in a buggy on the downwind runs. I had to ask pbc twice just how many miles we were covering on each one, it was unbelievable. Even the upwind legs had us moving at quite a clip. Saturday was a much more technical day (for me) due to the surge in people on the beach and the almost dead north winds. Phreerider showed off his amazing kite control on the landboard, and even I came out of the day with some seriously improved confidence and kiting skills. Not too hard to do when your options are practice, or sit and watch everyone else have fun in otherwise good wind speeds ;-) The only sadness for me was the missed run up to driftwood beach, low tide corresponded with the almost pure north winds of the day.. Moving anywhere on the beach meant a lot of tacking, and I wasn't quite up to snuff to manage (even pbc was forced to turn around).

As it was my first trip to Jekyll, spent some time walking the beach saturday morning near the shipwreck and wow! what a nice playground that must have been for kiting. Running to the water tower still has a lack of people and wonderful features to look at. There's quite a bit of varied scenery on both ends of the island -- makes for fun runs up and down as the scenery and beach is always changing on each run. And yes, I learned the lesson that for every sandcastle, there is a giant pothole next to it :-)

PHREERIDER - 17-9-2012 at 06:50 PM

JI is a sweet spot! perfect place to get some time in Nick. side shore rides are busy for sure. NICE FLYING with guys !
