Winds are turning south! (and it was awesome!)

flyjump - 22-8-2012 at 10:48 AM

I'm so happy right now after reading wind maps projected for this week. Windalert.com and windmapper.com both are showing winds coming up from the south later on this week and weekend.

For the midwest spots that I fly in these are the best. It means that the crappy summer shifting wind is over and stronger more solid wind is on its way! Temperatures dropped to 61 degrees last night and will peak at 90 today. I don't know about you, but large temperature swings at my local spot usually means wind is on its way.

14-18mph winds are projected for Thursday-Saturday during the late afternoon. :wee::wee::wee::wee::wee::wee::wee:

Nice!! Send some this way please!

Nothing here for the next few days

Get some Adam!

The summer winds have been horrid here. If there's enough wind to fly, the rain and lightning are just minutes away.

Send it south, Adam.

Same here in GA as in FL Phillip, totally lame-o wind all summer, but it looks like this tropical storm south of us may bring some wind early next week. ... Windfinder.com is finally showing some double digits for Tue and Wed next,... but of course I'll be at work,... blasted work ethic

... someone will be taking some 2-hour lunches this week ;-)

Yes, tropical storms! They suck moisture away as they bring wind. I can see it in the forecast. Perhaps this is the weekend!

Thanks for the tip!

I had a great session this weekend. Wind started at 14mph and built to 33mph and it was wicked fun. Speed, big jumps, lots of tricks and great weather. I wish you guys were there with me.

I had the chance to teach a few more people lessons....its always good to see the smiles on a new kiters face.

BeamerBob - 27-8-2012 at 06:32 AM

So you just keep the 15 out the whole time? :P Glad you had a good run!

flyjump - 27-8-2012 at 06:40 AM

haha no bob it got to crazy for the 15. Even the 9 was too much after a while. I eventually switched to the 4m scout and we were jumping with that thing...... it was nuts. Perfect strong yet smooth winds. It was a dream.

I had the 15 out in the mid 20s for a bit and had some good height and hangtime. It got to the point that with the kite fully depowered on both the clam cleat and sheeting out I still couldn't walk upwind. It was wild. I tried landing the kite by pulling the hand brake and I just started skudding down wind and eventually had to pull the safety

Indeed this was a good weekend. I went out Saturday and Sunday. Nick, Katie, Dean, Tim and Ruth joined me Saturday for some flying fun. Katie shot a few of me and Nick flying under one of Dean's newest creations.

We be flyin'

Mini-Redline

I got to fly my 15m Phantom II I picked up from Mougl this summer. It was very nice. I thought for a while I should drop my large arcs from my quiver, but for inland riding they are so valuable. I need the extra power on the grass. I need the depower and gust management because even in the most treeless area of Gainesville there are still plenty of trees and houses to make sheltered spots and swirly spots.

On Sunday the wind was 15-ish with gusts to 25. It was a 13m Arc day. Only occasionally did I have to reach for the trim to ease the load. It was a fast and wild ride. Unfortunately my 10m Scorp had an adverse event involving some chain link fencing.

Boo-boo on my Arc

It's fixable, but I was sure glad it was not on my new toy.

ouch dude! that sucks man.....

pbc - 28-8-2012 at 07:12 PM

It'll get better. This little feller will be back in action very soon.

I don't do things like this often, but nobody's perfect. I've never burst a kite, but this is the third I have punctured. I got a little too casual about my downwind hazards.
