It was always a 6 month contract, but for the past 5 years, it had been 'renewed' automatically during the year. At the start of the year, we got a
formal invitation: "Do you want to keep working here? Yes? Here's the contract..."
But this year... last day of term in July, the department boss told the 3 of us that they'll be interviewing for our jobs in September and that we
will have to re-apply and interview for them too.
Went to the interview, got the letter yesterday: "You were unsuccessful..." In fact, none of the 3 of us who've worked there for the past 5 years were
successful. Huh, what are the odds?
So, get this -
If they'd told us at the start of the year they were going to play this game (or even hinted at it) none of may have taken the contract so they'd have
been stuck having to interview right at the start of the year. Or maybe they were worried that we'd just have bummed around and they wouldn't have
gotten bang for their bucks...
Telling us on the last day of term meant that there was nothing we could do before the holidays - like use up all our leave - because we'd have to be
on our best behaviour for the weeks prior to the interviews in the vain hope we'd get to keep our job.
By giving us 4 days notice, they've minimized the time that we could leave them in the lurch - we've all taken this last week as paid leave.
Bunch of underhanded wankers. I knew we got no respect as teachers ("You don't have a licence!" "No, I haven't done the 3 week teaching course in
Japan...") but it just shows how little they care about employees... especially gaijins.
What really @#$%s me off - I put off having my ankle operated on until the winter holidays... so as not to screw up the school schedules and not to
waste kiteboarding time.
If I'd known that we'd have to interview for our jobs (regardless of outcome) at the start of the year - when I was offered the contract - I would
have had the operation sooner - like, in June. Telling us on the last day before the summer holidays, after we'd already made plans, means I can't
have it done on my insurance - I'll have to go on the wife's as a dependent...
... which also means I can't claim for Unemployment Insurance cos that income would mean I'd have to pay for my own insurance.
Considering the op is booked for December... that means I'm several months in the hole.
Nice. Best thing is - they'll be thinking "What a bunch of #@%$#! gaijins, not going to work for these 4 days."
No reference either - so I may as well have done nothing for the past 5 years.stetson05 - 24-9-2012 at 07:28 PM
That really sucks!flyjump - 24-9-2012 at 07:43 PM
Being a teacher sucks sometimes. We always get blamed for how terrible their children are. But to get not even a reference is so bogus!
Not as terrible as TEACHER's children...!

;-)
People you work for are not your friends. Get way in back of the concern line.... your after your bosses paperboy and the sandwich shop clerk who
makes their lunch!
Do they teach compassion and ethics..and hypocracy where you teach?
Life sucks..then you kite!
Here' s your job reference right here:

Hey Kami they are on the lookout for chalkies over herejimbocz - 25-9-2012 at 03:59 AM
My wife is a teacher here in the UK. I could rant for hours about how poorly she is treated, how she lectures at one of the most well known colleges
in the country but barely gets paid more than the janitor. Like your story, the administration leaves no oppourtunity to screw the workers.lives2fly - 25-9-2012 at 04:03 AM
That really sucks. Hope you get something else soon.
Hope you can make the most of not being at work by getting lots of kiteboarding time instead!B-Roc - 25-9-2012 at 04:24 AM
Bummer for sure but now you have more time to kite.
Surprised you can say f--cks on this board. Thought for sure the filters would have picked that one out.Kamikuza - 25-9-2012 at 05:33 AM
Yeah, had a great session today! looking forward to more of them :D
The more I think about it, the worse it gets. Means all 4 of my bosses above me were in on this charade, and the only reason they had an "interview"
was to cover their asses so we couldn't sue or something... they had no intention to hire us gringos.
We're betting that they've ditched us and gone for Japanese people who speak some English instead... people who won't say F-O! when they get 'asked'
to do (illegal) things like work through an unpaid lunch hour...
Dishonest and underhanded. Shouldn't be surprised really; I live in country where a major meat products company bought back all the mad cow beef that
the government confiscated from other companies, then resold it... but I am.cheezycheese - 25-9-2012 at 05:46 AM
Hey bro I am with ya... Officially totally unemployed!! Filed for UE Benny's yesterday. Scumbags also gave us no notice. They call us on Fridays to
give us our schedule each week. Well two weeks ago there were no calls... But hey, I'm loving your 10m Outlaw !!!Bladerunner - 25-9-2012 at 05:52 AM
I don't exactly know the show but a girlfriend who taught there said she made the real money teaching private lessons? The school gig mostly gave her
accomidation and such.
Since you are set up can you not go the private route?
I hope it works itself out somehow! :Ange09:
I work on a contract bases as well. It seems that eventaully most contracts find an end. Usually to replace with cheaper ones. It is sort of the
nature of the beast.tridude - 25-9-2012 at 09:44 AM

Best to get some water time, and look forward to something new.
At least you made an impact on the students, regardless of the shenanigans happening around you.WELDNGOD - 25-9-2012 at 02:35 PM
That sux Bro! Get some airtime, cleanse your soul!Kamikuza - 25-9-2012 at 03:30 PM
Wife is set up with a good job, I've got a few others on the go at the moment too... so we're not in trouble. I'm going to miss the cruisey hours
though.
I hate teaching privates - I hate having to rely on the whims of other people for an income. Did that for a while but it's a friggin nuisance.
Used to work for a company (still do, but only one day a week now) that paid me as much in 2 hours as I got all day at school :D but I never saw the
wife - she worked days, I worked nights. They do have daytime contracts sometimes too - but that usually means going into Osaka on the train - yuk!
The loss of the insurance is really the biggest issue, though.Todd - 25-9-2012 at 03:45 PM
Bummer man... sorry to hear that. How about teach kiteboarding :dunno:Kamikuza - 25-9-2012 at 03:50 PM
No interest - the guy at the club house has maybe a lesson a month, on average... he gets more money from charging fees for the showers etc. Which
reminds me, I need to pay him :oPHREERIDER - 25-9-2012 at 04:44 PM
