6m Phantom tour running into a squall~video

markite - 4-10-2012 at 08:05 PM

A friend of mine moved from Canada to Ireland a few years ago and gets to rub it in on how much he buggies now with videos posted all the time. Here is his latest doing a tour further along Inch beach using a 1st generation 6m Phantom and then running into a squall and the kite gets away ....

ha, ha, that'll teach you to get so much time in the buggy Mike!

So jealous of the beach! Very glad everybody came through with no injuries, and that pretty little red phanny didn't get eaten.

Mark can you post the link. I can't see the video on my phone.

Here is a link to all of Mike's video's from buggying in Ireland - he's down in the southwest so usually rides Banna or Inch - some really long wide open hard pack beaches. The video at the top is the latest that says Inch Beach Oct 2 part II

Just checked cheez, it says it's not available on mobile.

Maybe your phone handles stuff different than mine and could get it to play.

Did he not have a leash? I couldn't tell what went wrong and why he pulled the safety.

If I go to the non-mobile version of YouTube I can watch it.
Mark I remember you posting his stuff before. That beach is unbelievable. I would never go home...

My thoughts exactly. didn't look like the kite "got away" but more like it was sent away when he popped the safety.

that is an awesome spot..........i'm so jealous

I'm trying to figure out what happened as well - looks like he releases and for a split second it looks like a leash then everything goes. So whether he released the kite and the safety then let go? I sent a message this morning to him to get the low down. He's probably having a cup of tea and drying his kite out.

Bladerunner - 5-10-2012 at 06:40 AM

Why do I wonder why he kept heading into the sqaull when he had miles of beach the other direction? Was he headed home?

If the kite was O.K. why not set up again and head home while " flying dry " ?

Looks like he was flying low and hit some tall grass or something to me? Then was very quick on the release. I think I saw the leash in the trunk of his car ( actually I see it clearly as he's flying ) . They aren't required as part of RTF after all ! ;)

Got your mail Mark, but figured I'd post here to answer any questions others would have & save you emailing back & forth.

When the storm was first noticed we did contemplate going the other way but decided not to as 1- we were almost at the far end anyways & 2- It looked like 2 cells with a clear spot in between them. The idea was to try to position ourselves between the two storms to avoid the worst of it.
Unfortunately the storm was moving far faster than we thought & it didn't keep going in the same direction. The mountains on the headland likely kept it out on the peninsula putting us right in it's path.THe gap between the two storms disappeared just before it hit the beach anyways. It only lasted (a very wild )5-10 minutes if that.

I didn't intensionally hit the safety release.I was fumbling for it while almost blinded by the lashing hail & had just about located it when there was a pop & the bar was ripped from my hand.
The safety line broke where it attaches to the line.

I suppose I could have reset the lines & flew it back but wind was still very strong & kite was vey wet.Would have been a pig to fly & without a safety,so I thought it best to get the free tow.

I did manage to rig a safety line once back at the van from my seldom used 15m Phantom & did get the kite flown dry before rising tide put an end to our session.

I suspect the release wasn't seated properly & I should have checked it over more carefully before & during the session.I say this because I can't see it releasing with just a touch.(Note to self to ALWAYS check gear thoroughly)

Originally I'd thought of edging it onto the ground & just as it touched pull the safety. As it was ,steering was difficult in the gusts, extreme winds & totally depowered. It was also very hard to see.

In the end,the kite was fine & lines didn't take that long to sort out.The guys in the mini yachts even got tossed about. One fellow had the wind lift the front end of his yacht up off the ground spilling him out the back.He managed to jump on the sail soon as it flipped over. The other fellow had his mast blow right off.if not for a line he had on it,his sail may have gone as far as my kite. Both of their incidents happened while their sails were not powered & totally sheeted out. They claim to have not seen anything quite like it in their +20 years sailing each.
I guess theres some comfort knowing I wasn't the only one who had troubles.
A lesson learned.....that mother nature can be a real #@%$#! & doesn't take kindly to guys who like to play with her.hahaha

Good Winds
Mike

As a kid I think I remember being told I did'nt have sense enough to come in out of the rain (dad was so kind with his words) now I see I am not alone in this world. You guys are nuts. :wee:

I hope RevPaul sees that rescue!

BeamerBob - 5-10-2012 at 10:30 AM

Thanks for sharing Mike and Mark! It was fun to ride along and see that amazing beach. We can all learn from each other's pitfalls as well. I've found that when things really go wrong, it was actually several things that went wrong at the same time. Seems to be your case as well.

Thanks for the great video to start my day.
Thanks for the great explanation when I got home !

I have had my top hat pop up with just a touch before myself. 07 bar? I notice it creeps up every now and then.

I am the guy who would have turned tail and sailed off in the other direction if I saw that coming in !
