front axle for buggy

beachrights - 13-10-2012 at 04:51 AM

Found that my front bearings on the Kite Trike are custom made and a real pain to get. 13mm hole- who knows!

I thought it might just be easier to replace axle- plus mine has threads on both sides which makes tightening a nightmare!

Question is- can I use an off the shelf bolt [hopefully grade 8] or is there a reason to use a "named" bolt.

Plus I can now use a 12mm bearing!

I would assume if you are using a 12mm bearing just get a 12mm bolt. I would spend the cash and get stainless bolt and nut. I also like to use a nylon lock nut so no issues with loosening.

I 2nd roc's idea.
much easier then switching out the whole front fork

A stainless bolt won't be as strong as a high tensile bolt.
If you are jumping or just want the strongest bolt available then get an Allen key headed bolt, they go up to grade 12.
In saying that though, my PL buggy that I jump only has a stainless front axle bolt and it has last ok.

I don't think the bearings are custom made .. sounds more like it use off the shelf 1/2" bearings and bolts. 1/2" is about 12.7 mm. That would be my guess.

Unfortunately they are custom- the last time I did an extensive search I ended up calling the company and found that out. I tried a 1/2- too small- 13mm is the size. Those are $20 each!!:puzzled:

I replaced axle bolt yesterday- couldn't find a grade 8 so I will need to order a Flexi or Lynn.

What is the diameter of the bearing seats in the hub? That will Determine how easy it would be swap in a stock 12 mm. I had a Kite Trike awhile ago but did not have it long enough to catalog the hardware or have to replace any.

I am pretty sure I still have a Flexifoil Ss front axle bolt and can check when I get back in town this afternoon.

$26 to Angus + shipping gets you a PL rim with bearings and reducer to 12mm... I'm sure he could hook you up with a bolt too!

I saw that Angus has the whole setup- wheel bearing, spacer and axle. He is on my wish list...well not Angus his parts are. Wait, that sounds worse. Lets move on!

.....in the past week I bought 3 kites, new tires for the buggy, tubes, paint, and bearings. The funds are depleted for awhile! Wifey would kill me if I spent any more dough!

I think I have some bearings left in stock for the Kite Trike. Send me an e-mail if you still need them and I will take care of you.

Thanks Angus- I will be ordering the whole setup from you soon.
