Alvord

MDK - 26-10-2012 at 08:46 AM

I think I might take a drive down to Alvord this afternoon :)

bigkid - 26-10-2012 at 08:52 AM

aren't you a nice guy :P

MDK - 26-10-2012 at 09:17 AM

sorry, I didnt mean that the way it sounded, but it is nice being somewhat close. I think if I take the Durango and go the back way its only 4 hours.

buggeyed - 26-10-2012 at 09:19 AM

There should be some good wind with all the rain we're getting on the coast.
If it was 7 hours closer I'd be loading up the car right now.
Have fun and take a run across the lake for me!!!!!:Ange09:

bigkid - 26-10-2012 at 11:47 AM

Going north from the lake bed is not bad, I did 55 all the way in the RV on my way out. Well not quite, I ran it up to 65 for a bit but the dust began to come inside and that wasnt to good. 1 hour 45 minutes from Alvord to Burns that way.

Yah yah, if I lived that close I would have my garage set up there. Honey, I'm going to put the truck in the garage, be right back.

As buggeyed said, have a walk, er uh I mean, have a run across the lake bed for me to:smilegrin:

MDK - 26-10-2012 at 09:28 PM

We are on the lake bed. It only took 4 hours coming in from the north: saved about an hour and a half and 75 miles!

MDK - 26-10-2012 at 09:30 PM

And Jeff.....I been cough cough looking for property here :)

MDK - 28-10-2012 at 10:47 AM

I had a great session! But it is more fun with friends. Only took 3 hours 45 min to get home!

bigkid - 28-10-2012 at 11:32 AM

Drive slower, not so much dust. Drive faster, stay ahead of the dust.

MDK - 28-10-2012 at 06:40 PM

yeah Jeff but there was no dust this time :) check out the photos I took yesterday

buggeyed - 28-10-2012 at 07:23 PM

Nice Pics,is that snow on the ground?Brrrr glad I wasn't tenting it out there this weekend.

MDK - 29-10-2012 at 08:39 AM

no snow down where we were. drove in Friday night, slept in the car, woke up to 36 deg. warmed up to around 57 deg. but because the air was dry it didn't seem too cold. it really was a nice session, the scenery was awesome. since I was by myself (no other buggiers, I had two of my boys with me) I stayed a little under powered and kept the speeds around 15 to 30 mph and I didn't wander too far from camp. Josh has been good about making several trips down from Washington, but I need to get someone from here interested so I have someone to go with me, safer, but as soon as I explain what I am doing they say I must be nuts! I had one guy interested but he said I would have to take up scuba diving so he had someone to do that with, I can’t afford another hobby even if I was interested in that sort of thing. Oh well I will keep trying, there has to be another nutcase here somewhere. :)

buggeyed - 29-10-2012 at 09:06 AM

Maybe try connecting with some landsailors also,Burton said he might head down sometimes if he knew others were heading out.

MDK - 31-10-2012 at 01:45 PM

I am already having Alvord withdrawals  with-draw-al (noun) a period during which somebody addicted to a drug or other addictive substance stops taking it, causing the person to experience painful or uncomfortable symptoms.

sunset-Jim - 31-10-2012 at 07:00 PM

you addict....:bigok:

good question.....I think he travels to do it....kind of like me and my hobby. I have some nice open well groomed hay fields here I could buggy in but I think I have been spoiled....I would rather drive four hours and buggy Alvord :)

Tom, did you catch the videos of Alvord we posted?
http://youtu.be/aFVtJ26cHmE
Buggeyed and BigKid posted some as well

RedSky - 4-11-2012 at 10:31 AM

Great vid Mark thanks!

I hope to be a Nabx next year and it would be a bonus to visit Alvord. It has to be done. Then again I'd imagine you'll be at Nabx too. lol

MDK - 4-11-2012 at 06:28 PM

already registered :) hopefully Alvord will be as good then as its been this October. but I am all for doing the Alvord Bonus :)

RedSky - 4-11-2012 at 09:54 PM

In that case I might just have to get more time off work. :)

bigkid - 4-11-2012 at 10:27 PM

You all are aware that Alvord is a lake? that it is full of water in the winter and has to dry out to become a dry lake bed? Guess you could always bring the water gear with the buggy and the snow gear.

BeamerBob - 4-11-2012 at 11:32 PM

All 5 inches per year fall in the winter???? In that double rain shadow???? I guess I could take the fins off the kiteboard if its damp.

MDK - 5-11-2012 at 10:10 AM

Josh visited Alvord after the last NABX, I will ask him what condition it was in, still not a guarantee but helpful. BLM says July through November are the best months for a dry lake bed. and I think October is the best month for wind.

MDK - 5-11-2012 at 10:42 AM

Josh said the lake bed was good. but I say it probably depends on the winter, last winter was pretty mild. I will keep an eye on it.

it had rained between my last two trips there, there was 0 dust and I came across an area where someone camped over night and found them selves in mud the next morning. I know this cuz there were no tracks leading to the mess but tracks going out, and lots and lots of foot tracks :) it was an area I covered in the trip before the last so I know it wasn't there before. but the surface was perfect for buggying and it was only 2 weeks between my trips, it must dry up pretty quick.

bigkid - 5-11-2012 at 10:43 AM

Most of the guys that go to Alvord try to make the 1st trip on Memorial day weekend. And at that date it is a hit or miss.

heliboy50 - 5-11-2012 at 12:08 PM

We rely on nature in this sport. It's always hit or miss. Alvord is a beautiful but unforgiving place. Plan ahead, avoid unnecessary risks unless you enjoy them, roll the dice to go out there and have some fun. No matter what has happened on any of my trips out there, they have all been memorable and well worth the effort.

MDK - 6-11-2012 at 12:49 AM

another Alvord video. from my last trip...Jeff what'cha think of that Buster you patched together :) bridal still holding together :)

http://youtu.be/W-EAShq20zo

BeamerBob - 6-11-2012 at 10:16 AM

Looks like you had some speed in that one! How fast were you running there. Nice Freddy Flintstone at the end!

MDK - 6-11-2012 at 11:46 AM

LOL, yeah bad habit.. still a rookie I guess. not sure on the speed, batteries died in the gps (drawback of not having the motorhome that has everything I need in it), um maybe 35 - 40. I went there with the intention to be cautious since I was the only buggier, but after reviewing the video apparently I did get in a few speedy runs. I think the angle with the kite low to the ground made it look a little faster too. fun to watch :)

MDK - 23-11-2012 at 08:12 PM

I am headed to Alvord in the morning just for the day! wish I could have gone with Josh last week....I believe he has a new personal best 47.1 mph! I probably wont be anywhere near that, forecast just calling for 10 mph winds but it should be a good time with the kids!

csa_deadon - 23-11-2012 at 10:20 PM

Was there with Josh last weekend. Well worth the trip. When the wind wasn't blowing we were firing off the spud gun and launching rockets! Hit 44.5 with the 7m frenzy. Had it trimmed out at 50%. Wondering how much faster the frenzy would have gone fully powered.

I can see why Josh Likes the east side so much. Looks like prim Snipe hunting territory!

arkay - 24-11-2012 at 01:55 PM

Alvord is not that great and it's so far from civilization that if something goes wrong you are completely screwed. I'd just stay away from that place... :cool2:

Bassetman - 24-11-2012 at 05:54 PM

Heck,Alvord is only 440 mile from here. By spring I hoped to be equipped to make a few trips down. Almost wished I still lived in Nampa, ID.....but only for a moment.

I heard Buffalo Bills is expanding to Oregon next year :o :spin: :o

MDK - 24-11-2012 at 09:25 PM

arkay, I am so glad you you are here to talk some sense into me, in fact I think I'm going to sell everything cuz this sport is way to dangerous and the only place it should be done is on a beach filled with people and suv's.....not! I have been to Sunset Beach, Ivanpah and Alvord; Alvord is by far my favorite place to ride and I am a St Lukes Air Member and I checked, they are 28 min away and there are local volunteer paramedics close by as well. BTW we had a great time today! I gave lots of rides today and my daughter Tyler and I reached 30 mph, it was a blast!

I can teach you a few moves for your stay away from Alvord dance.:wee:

heliboy50 - 25-11-2012 at 01:25 AM

You also have to remember that the lake bed is frozen over with a foot of ice this time of year.

csa_deadon - 25-11-2012 at 01:40 AM

The thing to remember is that you can be screwed no matter where you are. If you use your head and plan ahead you are going to be ok. Poor planning can hurt you no matter where you are, or what you are doing.

It doesn't hurt to bring a nurse along!

heliboy50 - 25-11-2012 at 02:27 AM

And godzilla.... Don't forget godzilla.

csa_deadon - 25-11-2012 at 03:08 AM

What about the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog? I think we saw one of those out there.

arkay - 25-11-2012 at 10:49 PM

this is not the dry lake you are looking for.

Not really sure what you are trying to say there Bill. If you know of the dry lake we are looking for please give up the name. I would really like to know what I'm looking for.

MDK - 26-11-2012 at 09:51 AM

I think he is just mess'en with us, I think if we ignore him he will go away :) at least that's what I did to those stupid hypnotist acts in Vegas and it worked, they just move on :)

arkay - 26-11-2012 at 12:52 PM

i would think you wiser than that. i'm all in for keeping open access to our blm maintained lands. you can figure it out ;)

MDK - 26-11-2012 at 01:01 PM

It doesn't matter what we say here, Alvord will never pull big #'s to threaten that. Because in that aspect it is too far from modern conveniences.

csa_deadon - 27-11-2012 at 12:03 AM

I was poking fun at his Jedi Mind Trick. I was briefly in range, or he had just taken a dose of a Hop mixture that increases the range and strength of his Jedi abilities. Fortunately, I had just consumed a caffeine laced concoction that has the ability to lessen the effects of his Jedi mind tricks! :karate:

All kidding aside.
We ride where we feel comfortable. Some do not like to risk being in the middle of nowhere, others do not like to ride the beach along side cars, and suv's. As for me, I will continue to dodge the cars at sunset, and roll the dice in the Alvord desert. Sunset Beach offers the local kite buggy crowd, and the desert allows me to just get away for it all.

Bill all is good, and just because it's a desert doesn't mean every run is a speed run.

:bigok:
