Pre-Event 2013

coreykite - 31-10-2012 at 11:45 AM

Hey Sailors,

Looking to explore options. After last year at Harper's (and all the ruts and holes) and as we can't use Superior any more, and Elmer's charges a fee and has been wet the past 2-3 years... I've been looking a bit afield.
Red Lake in Arizona is pretty nice. Off US Hwy 93 between Vegas and Kingman, AZ, Red Lake is huge. Some 40+ s/m and nearly round, Red is dotted with bays and inlets and terrain choices. About 25 miles from the highway (#93) keeps looky-loos at bay. Paved (Stockton Rd) road all the way to the shoreline. Access for RV's and city cars. No facilities.
Check it out on Googlemaps and let me know what you think.

BeamerBob - 31-10-2012 at 11:54 AM

Might be a good choice since its closer to Vegas. I've had my eye on this spot since you pointed it put to me in the spring. I won't make the pre event this year I imagine but the school schedule has me set for the full Monty at nabx.

markite - 31-10-2012 at 12:23 PM

and it's getting closer to the Grand Canyon where the Skywalk is if visitors wanted to go a little further for site seeing - also get to see Hoover dam etc. I remember driving by and looking down at it but haven't been on it - sounds like it might be a good choice for something different.

flyjump - 31-10-2012 at 01:35 PM

What are the dates for the pre event this year?

SlasherQuan - 31-10-2012 at 03:15 PM

it works better for me....Takes less time to get to Kingman from PHX, Barstow is almost 6 hours, Kingman is like 3. Harpers is troublesome not only cause of bumps and such but the surface there is softer and those of us with heavier buggies have a harder time. I'm down for Red lake

Lets not blame the buggy!

Ramij2 - 31-10-2012 at 11:28 PM

Some of us don't have the luxury of owning top rated equipment. We just have to make do with what we have. So I learned to buggy on a Datsun of a buggy. Which gave me the understanding of how pilot and maneuver a lot better than if I would have started with the Maserati of a buggy. But, now that I do have a Maserati I can appreciate its full potential. So, don't blame the buggy for lack of skill. By the way Harper's was pertty nice last time I was there. On the other hand it would be awesome to venture out of my comfort zone!

awindofchange - 1-11-2012 at 12:24 PM

Been to Red Lake a couple times, it is pretty awesome. It has large flat areas for plenty of speed runs plus it has some hilly areas that can be fun to tool around on and play. It is right off the highway, just pull in from the paved road, throw your gear out and ride.

With the new bypass over the dam on the highway, getting to Red Lake is now about 30-40 minutes faster from Vegas. It's about a 1.5 hour drive from Vegas and very close to Kingman for those that may want to grab a cheap room in town.

I think that would be a great location for the Pre-Event.

geokite - 6-11-2012 at 03:26 PM

Can't wait. One of my tabs in Chrome is set to the map of the area. Looks like a great buggy spot, as long as it is smooth. Anyone know the dates yet? Antsy...

gbrown - 8-11-2012 at 08:06 AM

The lake looks good from the maps. Coming from the east it will save us time and money. Also when we leave and head to NABX we can stop at storage shed and pick up stuff which might save a trip later.
But for our friends from Calif it will add that time and cost.

chris - 8-11-2012 at 11:59 AM

Looks cool.

Red Lake

geokite - 8-11-2012 at 03:40 PM

I hope it is smoother than THAT. Bumpity bump bump on my rumpity rump rump.

KAZEDOKA - 8-11-2012 at 08:09 PM

Awesome area, the location i sailed Memorial Day week end was at mile marker 36.Stockton hill rd. The surface was pristine 5Mi X 5Mi. B/4 My arrival Blokart enthusiasts Mark established a new world speed record, utube video- Blokart world record to view the area and surface. Enjoy

^^ What he said. So if the event starts on 3 April is it safe to assume/ plan that the pre event will start on 30 or 31 March?

It's a longer drive for us (an extra 4 hours or so) but its something new to try out and that's where ChefCarls going to be so that's where we will be too

Sounds like a great new place to play.

I was looking at going to the pre event and googled the new bridge at the dam and now I am not to sure I want to go, I can get the motorhome down the bridge but up the other side will be a bit tough.

When the wind blows it fills back up. No problem!

Cerebite - 9-1-2013 at 08:19 PM

On behalf of my industry I would like to apologize for that BigKid et al :shocked2::smilegrin:

GIS geek mode on --- in order for satellite imagery to be geographically accurate it is mathematically tied to a digital elevation model [DEM] or digital terrain model [DTM]. Like the name suggests this is a mathematical model of the surface of the earth usually derived from stereo image pairs or radar mapping. It takes a lot of work, either human or computer, to then go in and adjust the model to the true ground rather than the "surface" created by man features such as bridges or buildings. In this case it could be corrected by making what is know as a surface model so that the "shape" of the ground follows the bridge for that 20m width rather than the canyon floor.--- GIS geek mode off :singing:

jeepersjoey - 20-2-2013 at 07:48 PM

Excellent John.

You throw out the Geek-Speak and shut down all posts.

Let's start this post back up.

Me and John are going to Red Lake. Who's in with US!?!?

If the buggies are stationary than the REVs will be chasing each other!

Morrie Williams - 21-2-2013 at 08:16 AM

Kelci and I "should" be there the afternoon of Friday Mar 29th.

Wolfpaklv - 21-2-2013 at 02:27 PM

Red Lake is Amazing. It is 5 miles by 5 miles of terrain. There are some bumpy spots, some smooth spots, a hill to climb with your buggy, and a crack of doom. Make sure you familiarize your self with the crack. It is a 3-4' drop in to it otherwise. I hit it once going about 35mph. Luckily it was full of water otherwise...who knows how bad I would have been hurt.

You guys are gonna love this place. It is amazing!

gbrown - 19-3-2013 at 07:07 AM

It is getting time to make final plans for our trip to the west. A lot of people wonder about the pre-event which is very much dependent on weather and when people can come and where they are coming from. Chip and I have decided that we will be at Red Lake probable early am on Friday the 29th and staying till ??? We decided this because coming from the east it is really on the way and we have not been there yet and the people who have say it is great.

We know we might miss some our friends who come from the west and will probably stop at El Mirage but we will see you at Ivanpah.

if you want to join us great but this is primitive camping you only have what you bring and we leave nothing there.
I will have my 5th wheel and have small grill you can cook on. Also we will have tools and a compressor for fixes.

Looking forward for my annual time to land sail and be with friends and family.

jeepersjoey - 19-3-2013 at 08:03 PM

John (Cerebite) should be there Thursday late or early Friday.

I should be there Friday late.

See you then!

Craig Sparkes - 20-3-2013 at 05:07 AM

It pleases me to think that in 1 week a kite will be back in the air on a dry lake.

Kelci and I will be there at Red Lake afternoon or early evening of Friday the 29th. See everyone soon!

We will take Wed as a travel day and be out there (pending Corey's report :)) on Thursday.

SlasherQuan - 22-3-2013 at 01:49 PM

Plan to be there Wednesday.....sometime.....I will be on Vacation so I'm in no real hurry. :singing:

Hey Sailors,
I made it up to Red Lake on the 24th.
Real nice and smooth.
Ready to have a swarm of wind worshipers ride across.

Directions from Vegas:
About 70 miles south on Hwy 93 (towards Kingman AZ)
Some 50 miles south of the dam.
Turn east on Mojave Co, N25 at Dolan Springs.
(The route to the Grand Canyon Skywalk)
Signs says: Pierce Ferry Rd. / Dolan Springs / Meadview

There is a grocery and two restaurants in Dolan Springs but no gas station.

Proceed to mile marker 22 and turn south (right) onto Stockton Hill Rd.
About 5-6 miles to the lake bed access.
We'll meet up about a mile out.

This is primitive camping - No water, no bathrooms, no restaurants or hotels, no nothing except what you bring.
We tend to share and feed each other.
Please plan on sharing and helping feed each other.

If I recall, Kingman is only about 15-20 miles east of there. They have full services with hotels and all if anyone needs. Please don't quote me on the distance, but I know it is not that far from Red Lake.

KitePwr - 25-3-2013 at 11:48 PM

Kingman is ~35miles due south of the lake entrance. Sounds like an easy hop down and back to get additional supplies if needed.
