I want to put an eye splice in a 3/16 (5mm) Amsteel line and am having trouble. The smallest fid Samson makes is 1/4". They said it would work but I
tried and it is too big. What do you use? Same question for 1/8" Amsteel. Thanks. Also the Samson instructions that came with the fid kit I got
are crap.BeamerBob - 12-11-2012 at 11:04 PM
I think I've seen videos where guys used looped piano wire fed through from end of splice to beginning.bigkid - 12-11-2012 at 11:14 PM

I use this method for making line sets.
I do the 1/8 blue amsteel splice loops with a Yale Wire Basket Fid. I found this when doing electrical work on custom made lamps. a bit easier to get
the material started. big key is to push the outside material together like the wire basket thing to make room for the inside to slide through.AD72 - 12-11-2012 at 11:36 PM
Instead of pushing with the fid, I just tried pulling it through with a wire. Worked better. That yale wire basket fid looks nice. I need to
practice more. I found a good video splicing 4mm. He makes it look easy and his fids are nicer than the Samson ones. Looks like it is a stainless
tube with a taper. crazymanme2 - 13-11-2012 at 04:11 AM
I used a small cotter pin & taped that to the rope to pull through.B-Roc - 13-11-2012 at 04:36 AM
I use a folded guitar string as a puller fid. They cost around $0.60 to buy and make. $2.00 if you attach them to a steel ring to help with the
pulling. I have one that is about 6" long and the other about 1.5'. They work very well with amsteel and especially well with 300-600# line. I use
the same locking brummel splice as he does in the video with the exception of the fact that you pull with a wire fid where he pushes with a solid fid.AD72 - 13-11-2012 at 08:59 AM
Do you lock stitch the splice after? The guy in the video does not stitch.bigkid - 13-11-2012 at 09:10 AM
instead of the lock stitch, he did the double through the line then went down the center. not sure of the decrease of strength at those points.bigkid - 13-11-2012 at 09:12 AM
What are you using the spliced amsteal for?BeamerBob - 13-11-2012 at 10:04 AM
We never had to stitch waterski rope loops, either on poly lines or spectra.B-Roc - 13-11-2012 at 10:39 AM
I don't stitch with the a double brummel. You could but the double pass through locks it in place. I do not think there is any decrease in stregth
since you are only creating 2 bends and no knots but I'm not 100% sure.
You also don't have to lock stitch with the zacher knot which is nice because it allows for adjustment for shinkage but doesn't slip under load.geokite - 13-11-2012 at 10:43 AM
I cut and shape a small piece of carbon rod, then tape that on the end of the amsteel and insert through the amsteel. The size of the carbon rode is
dependent on the size of the amsteel, and the length of the carbon rod is dependent on how small my loop will be.bigkid - 13-11-2012 at 12:01 PM

I agree, the Amsteal is rated far beyond what most of us need, unless you are lifting the house with the truck.:shocked2:AD72 - 13-11-2012 at 12:58 PM

Depower line for a 3:1 race bar with 2 pulleys. Also will be replacing the standard bridal pulleys with Ronstan Series 20 Orbit blocks. I will use
the 1/8th for lashing and pigtails. I thought I could use the 20's for the bar but the 5mm line is too big to act as lashing for the pulley. I am
going to order some 30's instead.mdpminc - 13-11-2012 at 02:30 PM
I have used both the Sleeving kit and Microhook Braiding Tool from fixmykite.com
Both work really well.
Prices are very affordable too.krumly - 19-11-2012 at 07:03 AM
FWIW, I bough the Samson to work splices in double braid on my sailboat. Don't bother with it for singlebraid splices. Go with the music wire loop
fid shown in my pics. I prefer a brummel splice - link to that is in the thread as well.

And FWIW, I've made music wire fids for use on 80 lb test single braid spectra fishing line all the way to 1/4" Amsteel. The former is a real
exercise in patience.

hears my set of home made fids. I mostly work with 3/16 -3/8 but i do have some guitar wire around hear somewhere.
