Cool stuff to try...any ideas?

Fairey Meister - 31-12-2003 at 10:31 AM

I have just got a powerkite (Symphony 1.4) after powerkiting in Cornwall, now I need some cool stuff to try just with the one kite on it's own...
I only weigh about 50kg, so is it likely I can do some kite-jumping even though my kite is pretty small?

Symphonyman - 2-1-2004 at 09:30 AM

Hi,I never knew one could do Kite Jumping with the 1.4?...I would`nt mind trying it with my 2.2 but so far no real wind.....funny you should say you were in Cornwall as I was there in August 03...I purchased a Delta Stunt Kite but havnt flown it properly since as ive got into Power kites!!...Cornwall is a great place to fly...I saw a couple of people near`Rock`(padstow)flying their foils on the beach.:spin:

verbatim - 2-1-2004 at 02:31 PM

Don't worry too much about the size of the kite - a 1.4 in a strong wind could offer the same pull as a 5m in light wind.

My Symphony 1.8 was pretty exciting on Trevone beach in November 'cos there was some STRONG winds - my lines snapped a few times, and I'm closer to 100kg in weight!

...Thankfully,mine has stood up to a 35 mph wind...I tend to find that a 15mph wind upward gives plenty of pull..having said that, ive been pulled onto my backside in less wind(quite funny to watch!)...suprising how strong they are and im 140Ibs!(15-16 stone).

Fairey Meister - 7-1-2004 at 09:48 AM

Cool! I am only like 8 stone, so i guess the 1.4 will be fine.

Next thing.....scudding? so i need to be running first to do this or just go from standing?

doomwheels - 8-1-2004 at 03:34 AM

Scudding... many power kites are strong enough to pull a medium sized truck so you should be able to start from a braced standing position. Keep the kite moving from side to side in smooth controled passes (like horizontal figure eights) and you can scud all the way down the beach. I say beach because scudding works best on the sand and is not safe on grass or gravel. Wear knee pads... you'll go faster!

verbatim - 13-1-2004 at 05:30 PM

Had my first real skudding experience on a muddy football field. Brother-in-law did better but he was wearing trainers that got clogged up whereas I had my clunky walking boots on with lots of grip.

Symphonyman - 18-1-2004 at 05:25 AM

...and there`s been plenty of mud around,eh?

havent been scudding on beach yet

Stug - 23-5-2004 at 11:29 AM

can u go faster on sand rather than grass, i would have thought damp/wet grass would be best

AD1 - 1-6-2004 at 07:07 AM

Scudding is much better on hard compacted sand rather than dry 'fluffy' sand - you'll go much further and faster. But having said that its probably best to start with dry sand as you'll have a softer landing.

Always thought grass was soft

Stug - 1-6-2004 at 02:47 PM

u need to learn how to scud properly b4 u jump otherwise u slip straight away wen u land and badly briuse yourself or worse, get injured

Yung one - 11-8-2005 at 11:08 AM

Hey, what would happen if you got a big rubber ring, sat in it and went riding round a lake or the sea? or sit on a little kid's boogie board and scud round the beach?

jumper - 18-8-2005 at 08:01 AM

that sounds like extreme fun but they have the potential to fip alot in high speeds if you tied yourlsef on makesure if you do flip you can get out or you may get seriously injured

Ginger_boarder - 29-10-2005 at 11:52 AM

What about using a skim board abit like kitsurfing in the shallows. Not tried it yet but as soon as i get to a beach its game on:D

Sthrasher38 - 20-5-2007 at 06:30 PM

I'm going to jump a cow next! They are all over in a field I wanted to fly in. But with cows comes s@#$. oh well.

j55 - 20-5-2007 at 06:35 PM

i've jumped about 5' with a bullet 2.5 in 20mph, i weigh bout 80kg

Sthrasher38 - 20-5-2007 at 06:37 PM

Dude right now i am waiting for a bullet 4.5 I cant wait! To try to jump.

j55 - 21-5-2007 at 02:20 PM

I have a bullet 4.5, I am able to get about 3-4 feet of air with a pendulum jump in 10-15 mph wind. I weigh about 165lbs.

From what I have read, its not too wise to jump too high with bullets as they do not provide much loft. You will fall just as fast as you fly.

Thanks

NPWfever - 2-10-2007 at 12:15 AM

I got some log shaped inflatable camp pillow things at the Army surplus store for a dollar each (I got 4) and I tied one to each flying line right by the bridles (because NPW don't float well) and i got on a buggy board with fins i put on it (and some straps made from an innertube) and it pulled me around my local lake quite well (no jump though) :wow:

NPWfever - 2-10-2007 at 12:17 AM

Okay it is way too late that post made no sense at all!:o
(NPWs dont float well)
(i got a boogie board with fins)
(no jumps though)

yay fixed now:cool2:

Pdxnebula - 21-10-2007 at 10:00 PM

Im thinking of & hoping for a ton of snow this winter with some good winds to go with it, then putting one of my kites on say 10' lines & get boogying down the nearest side street on an inner-tube as long as the winds blowing...

NPWfever - 22-10-2007 at 06:11 PM

Well yeah but the only thing is you need directional control and a tube is not exactly known for steering. I would try it but you would need to be constantly crossing the window and twisting the kite as to keep the kite moving faster than you and you would increase in speed. Also in order to so the "stunt" flying required you would need 100 foot lines so the kite doesn't hit the ground.

Pablo - 22-10-2007 at 06:17 PM

You don't need a directional tube, you just need the wind to be blowing almost straight up a hill, kite overhead to slide down the hill, drop the kite lower and work it to pull yourself side to side and up the hill.

Side note, no wind, big steep hill and a 8-10m kite can be fun as well with a tube or toboggan.

NPWfever - 22-10-2007 at 07:31 PM

Yeah i suppose uphill would work. And what are you talking about with the sidenote?

Pablo - 22-10-2007 at 07:48 PM

Well, get something like a Blade 10.5m and try and toboggan down a steep hill with it overhead. Glide angle is much more gradual than the hill, well, you can imagine the rest.

NPWfever - 23-10-2007 at 01:59 PM

R u kidding me? That is way sick but really stupid. I was talking bout that on a PG forum and all the pilots like freaked out. I'll try tho.

Pablo - 23-10-2007 at 06:20 PM

I didn't say it was smart, just possible, be sure to cut across the hill so you're only 5-10ft up if things go south

NPWfever - 23-10-2007 at 06:55 PM

LOL! I dint say it was smart just possible. thats great. yeah I would A: do it with an 8 meter so i am not lofted away (i weigh 130lbs, how many stone is that, and what does stone mean?) B: I dont have any steep hill round here so i wouldnt get too high (maybe foot launch at sand dunes with a good headwind) and C: i would do it on skis cuz you r facing forward, i can ski really well, and you go faster in less distance, oh and you can harness in. Also you dont do this on long lines do you? just like 10 footers? Yah turning sounds good although this does look fun....

Pablo - 23-10-2007 at 09:04 PM

I'd use standard line length, just make sure they've got a good rating and are in good shape.

Also, Ozone, PKD, I believe Flysurfer all have exp making parasails, I know both PL and Flexi are also known for being built tough and proper. I don't think I'd go that high with anything less.

Pdxnebula - 23-10-2007 at 10:09 PM

Well even without a Tube, I've got a nice L O N G street right out my front door, & steady east winds that love to blow right down the middle of the street, east/west in the winter, so no need for long lines...

I can't belive I said that! How funny:lol: I haven't got to jump a cow yet but that would be cool.

Pablo - 25-10-2007 at 06:23 PM

Somehow I suspect the greasy cow pies may be a challenge when loading up for a jump.

Sthrasher38 - 25-10-2007 at 06:35 PM

Why jump when you can scudd.lol in the mud pies.

Pablo - 25-10-2007 at 07:15 PM

Well, you could probably scudd for miles.

1oldkid - 25-10-2007 at 07:59 PM

Jeez! That is just amazing!
What kind of kite was that? Would have been cool to see the landing, looked like he went down out of site pretty fast at the end...

NPWfever - 25-10-2007 at 09:22 PM

The one where he launches off the mountain? If thats the 1 u r talking bout yeah it says size and make on the vid but the model idk? Yeah looks like he does a sick kiteloop at the end.
