1m or 2m FB on 200' lines

bigkid - 26-11-2012 at 08:12 PM

Been thinking about putting a 1m or 2m fixed bridle kite on 200' or longer lines, and flying it in 20 to 30mph winds.:wee:

Anyone with any experience with small kites on long lines in high winds?

Hows your vision BK , that thing is going to be just a speck at that distance. I know my 10m Pansh looked way way far away when I had it up somewhere just shy of 300 feet. I imagine you will see a slight delay in the steering response due to the bow in the lines creating a little out of sync feeling.

I imagine it would have to be a fairly stable kite or it could be downright uncontrollable. Also it might be really dragged down by the weight of the lines.

Control and visual issues is all I can think of here. 1m to 2m in that kind of wind still produce a lot of pull, and dart around like woodstock the bird on crack. Now couple that with the kite looking like a speck of dust.........
Gives me shivers.

I find 2m kites and less to be too twitchy and wonder about control ? It should create a larger power stroke ? That would be an advantage ?

Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

I have flown a 6m Combat on 200' lines in 15mph (or about) and found it was less powerful than on short lines due to the line drag, and I had lots of time to think about what I wanted to do, and the little spot thing, with out my glasses, I can spot a PKD kite a mile down the beach. Hmmmmm, 5000' lines?

Everyone says little kite, shorter lines. Was led to believe bigger kites on shorter lines was better also. Sorry, I defiantly disagree with that, maybe in a race, but out in the open for my own enjoyment. NO.

I would like to try even longer lines than 200', but running the bug through the surf and the kite only feet away from the trees and the bluff wouldn't allow anything longer than 200'. Most of our beaches are not that wide.

i have a 0.7 (and 1.4) meter PKD Buster with OEM lines and handles.
they look like flying flourescent pillow cases (they fly surprisingly well and right though).
i had feet and meters mixed up...
the 30 meter/100' lines' slack already cause a noticeable sponge/delay. i imagine 200'/60-ish meter's lines on it would still be manageable though.

Next time your down this way we gotta try it!!!
Sounds like fun!! My turn to film....:singing:

I think we just say....200ft lines and adjust the kite size accordingly....bring a couples sizes and we'll test em out...

The "air up there" is awesome....smooth and consistent....

I dont understand this thread at all. In 20 - 30 mph winds whats wrong with a 2-3 m on 15 - 20 m lines? Your kite does not produce more power or speed just because its closer to the sun or almost out of the atmosphere. Less line = less drag = faster speeds. Even if speed was not your main focus who wants to wind up 200' foot of line? not to mention its hard to ride with other people around when your lines cover such a vast area. Also the delay turning response time would be great .. mix that with a 1m kite and more disaster will follow.
If slower speed is what you want then use a grocery bag and fly it straight off the handles .. they are included with the bag :wee:

Well Dino, It's like this.
With my understanding of long lines and large kites, if applied to long lines and small kites should be somewhat the same. My ultimate desire is to go out in 35 to 50 mph wind and not have to try to keep up with a 1 or 2m kite, but to be able to still fly the kite with more control.
I need to work up to those winds, and all I was asking is if anyone has had any experience with small kites and long lines.

If I wanted to fly a bag on handles I would have looked you up.:P:lol: Not all of us sit around and count money, some of us spend it. Good to hear from you by the way.

And flying with other people, most of them are using longer lines also.:eekdrull:
Do you have any experience with long lines and small kites, or just concerned for my well being?:embarrased:

Interesting thought, I loved flying my 10m on 200' lines when the winds were nothing on the ground. My thoughts, larger window, better air, more time to react. If you don't get around to trying before we meet up again, I would be a test pilot. My 2.2 century on 200'. Makes me smile.

I took my 1.5m trainer out in 30 gusting to 50. Lines lasted about 5 min before poppin. Dug out a set of slingshot profire lines and threw them on. (40m..2x20m lines)... turned a hornet on crack into a friendly puppy, and much fun was had static flying that day.

come to think of i have a 10' (foot) Flexifoil ProTeam(?) (2 line foil with leading spar) and i believe it came with 150' lines which are the longest lines I've used (other than stringing two or three 500' reels on a $5 plastic single line delta...still don't know where that kite went that day)...
anyhoo...it is nice to bust out that kite once in a while and rakeing it along the horizon is fun fun fun..very large window.
the small pillow cases are going to be tricky(ier).
