I think i'm losing my job this year

flyjump - 6-12-2012 at 08:16 AM

Well fellas i'm feeling crappy this week. I found out yesterday that the enrollment in my school is low this year so the district may be cutting some teachers. Since i'm not tenured yet I think i'll be one of the first to be cut. I got wind of this through a friend who knows the right people and he gave me a heads up yesterday.

Unfortunatly the district doesn't start the contract process until March. So I have a few months to just sit and worry. I know many of you have gone through this before, but I think the worst part is not knowing for certain. So i'm on the lookout.

If anybody knows of any schools who are looking for Highschool Science teachers (physics, biology, Earth Science) let me know.

Its going to be a long three months of waiting

That's a bummer man! At least you have some time to start looking, you should move to the east coast!

cheezycheese - 6-12-2012 at 09:01 AM

Been there, done that... No work since Sept. :( more time for kiting...

I second Martin.. Move out here... :bouncy:

Not to make light of your situation, but you are diligent. I don't see this holding you back for long...

flyjump - 6-12-2012 at 09:04 AM

The wife and I are already looking at moving ;)

thanson2001ok - 6-12-2012 at 09:11 AM

That stinks. I bet you outperform 90% of the other teachers in your school.

This tenure stuff. Don't get me going.

Come visit. Bring kites!

I may have to do that Todd. Just feeling very discouraged this week

thanson2001ok - 6-12-2012 at 09:18 AM

Any time, my friend. Any time.

Feyd - 6-12-2012 at 09:27 AM

Sucks to hear A. Kinda double edged situation as you aren't getting let go immediately so you have time to try to line stuff up but at the same time the whole mess and uncertainty is hanging over your head.

And the worst part is NOT KNOWING and having everymove you make be somewhat affected by not knowing where things stand.

Take stock in where you are right now, like right this second. You're okay right now and in a good position to start preparing for your next move down the road. Kinda scary I know but this stuff all kinda happens for a reasaon and I'm guessing you've got Karma on your side so don't sweat it too much, just stay focused and you'll be fine.

Applications are being taken for Science teachers here in Clark County. 5th largest school district in the country I understand.

Chad - 6-12-2012 at 11:23 AM

I would be happy to pass your resume along to the High schools in my area? Not that you would want to move here but i would do anything to help out!

If the time comes for that, I will contact schools all over....including schools closest to the coast ;)

I think the hardest part is what Feyd said, just not knowing what to prepare for.

I don't want to have a bad attitude and then make the decision easy for them to let me go, but at the same time I don't want to invest my heart and soul into the school if they are going to drop me so close to the summer.

My contract ends in May, but they split my paychecks up in a way that I will still be getting paid june-august, so I will have means to set up something else for myself and not starve. I guess this is just a part of living in the real world and being at the bottom of the totem pole.

Anybody need to hire a kite instructor?

rocfighter - 6-12-2012 at 11:57 AM

What you need to do is find a town with a lot of folks like me. See I have wicked memory issues. So you could teach these folks constantly and they will still need you.
Ask Todd. I still can't post a picture although he has told me how I can't remember how many times! SEE my point? :bigok:
So good luck I hope this all works out for you.
By the way, are they cutting jobs and potentially closing schools the same way they did here 30 years ago? You know by not researching population growth in the districts and finding out 10 years later that they needed to build a bunch new schools because there were to many kids now? Gotta love the gubment.

After reading first thought was .... come to NJ .... and as I see Martin did same ...
I am sure you can find teaching job in NJ with no problem .... Its just cost of living is way higher ... Its a prison .... If you buy house .... thats it ... you be a hamster for rest of you life running around and focused on making money ... lol...

If you decide to consider NJ I can ask few of my friends in school system ..... and you always welcome to come visit me if you want research area ....

g00fba11 - 6-12-2012 at 01:44 PM

Yup....bring a resume, suite and tie, and of course some kites.....and I will put you up while you do some job hunting.....on days the wind isn't blowing.....

Kind of hard to reconcile right now, but it is wise advice to finish strong. Good for the kids, and VERY good for you.

I had a similar situation once. No regrets.

rocfighter - 6-12-2012 at 05:05 PM

Konrad must know some good teachers. Look how good he talks and writes in English now, I doubt he learned it from us!!

Bladerunner - 6-12-2012 at 05:08 PM

I'm a union electrician and was told I.B.E.W. ( our union ) stands for I've Been EveryWhere . I have faced similar situations working contracts and it sucks not knowing how things will play out. Believe it or not it gets easier to deal with the feelings when it has happened to you before.

Every time change has been forced on me it has turned out for the better. I know it's hard to look at it this way but they are actually setting you free to move on to a happier place. Take advantage of the time to work out your options. NEVER burn bridges !

I have to think your students think your the best thing that has happened to science class since the bunsen burner !

It is kind of sad that how " good " you are as a teacher doesn't pull more weight than tenure. I'm sure your students would get behind you but doubt it would effect the outcome ? So nice to see so many offering to try and help !

Keep a chin up and unload on us . We are Family after all !

flyjump - 6-12-2012 at 05:14 PM

Thanks for the kind words of encouragment Ken. I'm not going to freak out on them or be lazy if it happens. I'm going to do my best with the time that I have while I am still there. Its just the feeling of not knowing the outcome.

I'm already looking to move to a town with my favorite kite location in the midwest. Its like jekyll island but with grass.

Its just discouraging for everyone to tell you that you are doing a great job, but that doesn't matter......only tenure

Drewculous - 6-12-2012 at 06:00 PM

Positive aspect.... More kite time bro!! Lmao!

No, that sucks somethin fierce.... If ya need anything, call me buddy

flyjump - 6-12-2012 at 06:02 PM

WELDNGOD - 6-12-2012 at 08:02 PM

Head EAST young man...

stetson05 - 6-12-2012 at 08:31 PM

Best of luck. Like you said, best not to get lazy on them. Hopefully the cuts wont happen or they leave you unaffected. If your work suffers though you can bet they won't have a hard time cutting you. If you do have to move it might be a good opportunity too. Again, best of luck.
