GEAR UP! Pads/Armor What's everyone riding with?

crazyherb - 6-12-2012 at 05:31 PM

Looking at some different safety gear, pads, armor, and whatnot...

I'm just riding with stock MBS Knee/Elbow Pads, and a Snowboard (or bike) helmet depending on temperature.

Wondering if I should gear up a bit more, or replace my 2 season worn out pads with something better. Maybe even a little upper body protection for those faster runs...

Anyone like what they wear?

Show off your gear!!

I just got a sweet deal on a Bern helmet at Cleanline in Seaside. $49 . I just paid $79 in Canada for the same helmet with winter lining.

+1 for a Bern brain bucket. I picked one up this year and I absolutely love it. You forget that you are even wearing it after awhile

stetson05 - 6-12-2012 at 06:15 PM

Wore my boarding shirt for the first time today. It is a military style shirt that is ripstop fabric and padding on the elbows. The sleeves are ripstop and the center of the shirt is moisture wicking fabric to help keep me dry. It actually has Velcro on the left sleeve which could be used to put numbers on it say for NAPKA. It is kind of like a jersey in that it is big enough to wear the hockey pads I bought a couple of years under it. I should probably wear the pads more often long with real knee and elbow pads. I did a little embellishing on the shirt too.

Flexboardz shirt by Stetson05,

I wear a red trace helmet on land that is for snowboarding and I take the winter stuff off for the summer. I wear hillbilly pads too.

I have a kryptonics helmet that I bought years ago that I wear on water. I should replace it though. I also wear a kayak PFD because it doesn't go down as low in my waist.

I ATB and I wear a Giro Remedy full-face MTB helmet, a Feldsheer Summer Motorcycle jacket(spine, tailbone, elbows, lacking in chest), Hillbilly Butt Pads, 661 knee pads and ankle protectors, Novik 'Totally Cool Man' gloves(have lasted like 3 atb seasons now!).

Honestly I get a little bit of guff from some people about wearing so much when they wear only a helmet, but hey, I fall down and eat it ridiculously often, and thanks to armor, I get back up and keep riding quickly. I'm going to add a mouth guard soon, I did break a tooth last year on a fall.

B-Roc - 6-12-2012 at 07:41 PM

Geez, I guess I'm way under-armored. I always wear gloves and a boeri ski helmet for boarding and skiing and standard skateboarding knee pads. I wear elbow pads only when I have short sleeves on or a coat that allows for them. I do consider my fusion seat harness to pad my bum a bit (or at least enough).

I'm not a fan of being overly bulked up but I am thankful for my helmet as my head has hit the ground a handful of times over the years and I know that has saved me.

Turn to the Motocross crowd.

Lots of gear, knee guards, elbow pads, kidney belts, braces of all sorts.........

I have RED hip and tail bone shorts, six six one elbow and knees, hill billy wrist guards, and SHRED READY helmet (Forty4 Escher), but really,

most of the time I just have my motor-cross gloves on and a helmet, too much padding can really mess with certain moves,...
any handle pass stuff, any unhooked work, cant use wrist guards.....
otherwise, I have found if the wind is good and Im going to be pushing....helmet, gloves, and hip as well as elbow pads are perfect!

Kober - 7-12-2012 at 01:42 PM

I was about to order some protective gear from this company :

http://www.demonsnow.com

mostly for snowkiting and snowboarding....

erratic winds - 7-12-2012 at 02:28 PM

KOBER- DO IT! The DEMON stuff is great! Highly recommended!

Kober - 7-12-2012 at 03:32 PM

Erratic .... Do you use any of theirs gear ??? let me know what you think .... I have Demon gear on my Amazon wish list for very long time .... and now with d3o inserts its even more tempting ...
,,,,, after using Aboards pads with d3o technology I know how big difference it make ....
Convince me ...... lol

erratic winds - 7-12-2012 at 04:35 PM

I tried on a DEMON upper body armor with the d3o at Dillon Snowkite Open last year, great fit for me, full range of motion, not bulky! It's what I will be replacing my gear with after another year or so! My summer-weight motorcycle jacket is very bulky by comparison!

crazyherb - 7-12-2012 at 10:52 PM

As always, you guys come through with more info then I can imagine...
Kober/Erratic
That Demon Flex Force PRO jacket looks AWESOME!!

Toss in some hyper knee pro pads, a full face helmet, and a CAPE... and I'd look like some sort of freak kiteATB superhero..

Wish list sent to wife...LOL....

Great inputs...guys!! Who else is gearing up!!??

stetson05 - 7-12-2012 at 11:46 PM

Looks like good stuff. Too bad I just spent my money elsewhere. Looks like I will be saving for one of these too.

Kober - 8-12-2012 at 01:20 AM

Glad you guys like theirs gear .... Looks very good for safety gear ... lol ... as crazyherb stated above a must for Super HERO ... and I am a SUPER KITE HERO so I am thinking about set of Flex Force X for snowboarding, snowkiting , ATB and buggy... If I get it ... you welcome to take closer look at next WBB ....

and since every super hero needs mask ..... here are the options :

ikemiester - 8-12-2012 at 01:04 PM

If I'm going to be jumping anything above 5 feet, my hillbilly pads are more important to me than my helmet most of the time, as I don't land on my head often (yes people, I still wear one). Anyway, back to the point, my hillbilly butt pads have saved me more than any piece of equipment I own tenfold. I always regret it if I forget to wear them.

Kober - 10-12-2012 at 02:57 PM

Ikemiester ,,,, Cleanline ??? ..... congrats my friend .... \

On last WBB I have few OBEs with one ver scary ...... I decided that I need to start use protection ... lol .... and since snowboarding its something that I like in winter if there is no wind blowing I think that will work for both ....l My only question is about jacket and pants .... Will I need to buy new ones ??? size bigger ?? I will let you know what decisions you need to make when my gear arrives......

EVS...

crazyherb - 31-12-2012 at 11:30 PM

661 d30 knee pads. Hillbilly butt pads. Full face 661 helmet. Leather sailing gloves (all fingers exposed.)

Body armor jacket for NABX.:embarrased::embarrased:

PistolPete - 1-1-2013 at 05:12 PM

Time to upgrade my armor arsenal for occasions of extremely high levels of CSE

chudalicious - 2-1-2013 at 01:22 PM

Forcefield armored shirt and knees - great and VERY lo-profile for kiting and motorcycling but not cheap!
Troy Lee full face helmet. Duh, protect the melon (and the face!)
Demon D30 padded shorts. Saved my arse countless times snowboarding and kiting and the lowest profile of any I have found... and yes KOBER, you are going to have to size up if you wear any a$$ pads!! :)

Something people have not mentioned - hightop sneakers with good ankle support because turning em ain't fun. :eureka:

I been through a LOT of protective gear because it won't stay in place when it counts... I can tell those looking you def get what you pay for when it comes to quality.

Kober - 2-1-2013 at 02:46 PM

I use Demon d3o shorts on my last snowboarding trip .... and yes .... I did get new pants size bigger .... My tail bone its defiantly happier... Must have if you ride ice covered trails ....
I am sure it will make my snowkite sessions on frozen lakes and riding ATB more enjoyable too ...

I witnessed the falling down today and I gotta agree with EW: ATGATT is the way to go. I use old motorcycle gear (used to own a Triumph Tiger 990 dualsport) and a Bern helmet.

My goretex BMW armored jacket:

My leather triumph armored jacket:

Two pairs of pants, both have hip, butt and knee pads. I look a little silly sometimes and definitely got hot quite often, but I've taken some serious spills and come out without a scratch.

MDK - 16-2-2013 at 11:16 PM

I wear the 661 sub gear LS with a loose long sleeve T, it has some chest, back, shoulder and elbow protection. http://a248.e.akamai.net/origin-cdn.volusion.com/jncwp.jwbfy...
I have a Giro full face helmet https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/public/l30yxxOe49nUIa-YupC...
no link for my gloves but they are bicycle gloves focusing on palm protection.
I plan to purchase these pants http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/20...
in my motocross days abrasion was my most common injury and I think riding the dry lake beds will be the same so that is my primary focus. Ironically the one time I wore a chest protector riding my dirt bike I broke some ribs :)

Uhmmm...

skimtwashington - 16-2-2013 at 11:18 PM

How do you wear the Hilbilly butt pads with a seat harness:puzzled:

MDK - 16-2-2013 at 11:38 PM

since I have been flirting with higher speeds, I will probably ditch the mountain bike helmet and been looking at this one http://motorride.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Carbon-Fiber...

No problem at all unless your seat harness fits like a rubber glove...

Curious

skimtwashington - 17-2-2013 at 08:54 AM

:puzzled:
Do you have a thinner version of the hillbilly(Impact Shorts) butt pads..or just a very adjustable harness?

Mine have padding 1/2-3/4" thick and when I measure w/ it on..... it adds 6+ inches circumferance(in effect -the waist)! My harness doesn't fit like a glove but that's WAYYY too much an expansion to work.

Who has that range of Harness adjustability to go with or without the HillBilly butt pads?.

Unless you have a very adjustable harness to wear over the Impact shorts...like the Ozone Access w/ it's wide range waist adjustment...or something else as adjustable, I don't see how it can work.
You wouldn't have the option. Would have to go up a size or TWO to fit the padding underneath that you would always have to use with it.

It's also quite thick to sit in a buggy with..though the the segmented padding bends fine-better than say , a stiff harness itself like a Dakine Fusion.

{Fusion not so good a buggy harness anyway: too high and stiff}

What are you using w/butt pads for a harness , Erratic W, Stetson....anyone.... Bueuller...anyone?

BTW....Most( especially standing) harnesses already have some foam padding...so..... how about a prototype harness that just adds thicker padding too it (segmented for flexability- like a Hillbilly)? Why awkwardly wear another thick piece under a harness ?

Also..if we're polling here what ..'we're riding with.." .. I only use a helmet now while buggying.

erratic winds - 17-2-2013 at 09:53 AM

I wear ozone access harness...never a problem...
