I would suggest you get in touch with Monkey Air kitesurfing in Malibu. Talk with Traig. He also gives lessons and teaches on Peter Lynn twinskins as well as LEI/SLE/Bow type kites. In my opinion, there is no easier beginner kite on the market than the Peter Lynn (Bomba, Guerilla 2, Vortex, Venom II). They have the best stability and are super simple to fly.

Depending on the wind and your board size, you are probably looking at a large kite in the 16 to 20 meter size (LEI/Twinskin) or the 12-15 meter size for SLE/Bow style. Us bigger guys need a little more kite in the air to get up on the board. Nice thing is that we can hold down more power in the gusts.

Traig has all the gear you need and will be able to let you try many different styles of kites to find one that you like. This is huge, especially when a kite setup can cost well over $1000.00.

He is giving lessons constantly so if you get his machine, just leave a message and he will return later when done. His number is 310-457-6896

Hope this helps.

Get a used set up to start. You'll trash it soon and be ready for new gear.
