I'm going to be a local kite sport ambassador

AnnieO - 28-3-2013 at 08:59 AM

I've mentioned before that I live in an area where no one has any idea about kiting in general. I've found that has been both good and bad. The good is that I've been able to bring interest to the sport since people around here know me among other things, as the kite lady. People have really developed an interest in kites by watching me at my local fields. The downside to being a one woman show is that I've had to pretty much be self taught but so far so good.

The news is that I've been asked to put on a kite demo at a nearby state park as part of the annual kid's Easter egg hunt. The park folks have done a great job planning the event as the kids will even be given their own single line kites to keep. I just hope we have a nice weather and conditions that will permit me to do some fun things with my kites for the kids. I figure I will do a static display with one of my stunt kites and also a power kite and then hope to do a live demo of a stunt kite and a power kite in action. I think I'll be more excited than the kids!

Great job Annie!!!

Static only?

Don't get in a buggy and run over the hidden eggs!

Sounds nice. The kids will think you're cool. Parents too. Good luck.

Ya, just static. Lots of treeline make for not the best conditions for wheels. That's why I don't fly there a lot.

Good job! Way to promote the sport :)

Be careful of those single lines they will slice right through your lines

I feel your enthusiasm AnnieO and its great. Where are you located? I forget. When we do the public power kite clinics at JIBE the enthusiasm of newbies is infectious and a real rush.

Sounds great! It would be cool if you could get one of the manufacturers or one of the bigger kite shops to loan you a single line lifter and a giant octopus or similar... that'd wow the kids. Always worth asking if there's enough lead time. PL, HQ, Gomberg, Into the Wind - I know they deal with that sort of thing - or maybe some of our forum regulars?

Way to go AnnieO! I've seen some of those single line lifters at kite festivals doing candy drops to the kids, neat way to get them involved.

Annie .... Great .... Its good to be seen as ambassador of something unique , exciting and interesting and bring others closer to understand how it works and how much fun you can get doing it ..... Maybe you will find more kiting companion when doing this show ..... Enjoy ...

How did it go Annie???

AnnieO - 3-4-2013 at 06:57 AM

It was fun but unfortunately there was no wind at all so I just did a display of stunt kites and various types of foil kites and talked about them to parents and kiddies as they came by. I thought worst case scenario I would at least be able to fly my ultra light stunt kite but there was no way, wind was non-existent.

Sorry about the outcome of the day but....You are the perfect person to be an advocate for the kiting community. I can tell from your reviews that you would be very through.

Have you decided to join us at WBB?...Just picked up some bigfoots, downtube and fork for my flexifoil...Can't wait to try and won't be standing around this year during high tide or wind not going in the right direction.

FYI. You can make tyvek kites with the kids in the future during non wind days (or both). Kids love them as they get to paint or marker the art on them...FUN & a great way to get them interested.
