1st Kite

My uncle let me borrow a slingshot trainer kite. I tried to fly it but the wind was dead. I got it in the air a couple times, but the lines were too loose to do any turning. It was a bummer because a hour before it was blowing pretty hard! It should be fun until I get a 4 line kite.

That's weird, the new kite curse usually only affects those who get their own kite, not when they borrow someone else's kite...

Not true... the curse is in effect for any kite that's new to you either on a temporary or permanent basis.

The curse is insidious, relentless and without mercy.

On occasion, it has been abated by arcane pagan rituals which generally requires the assistance of a wee furry.

damn, how do I break the curse?

Lend your kite to someone else. You can bet the wind will come back as soon as you don't have ready access to a kite.:bouncy:

I haven't even flown the trainer, but I scored a beamer 3 3m on these forums today! With lots of parachute experience I knew I wanted a 4 line the first time I heard about them, and got to fly one with the bums. (yeah, real homeless guys that have $1000s in kites!)

Tell me more about these "bums"... This is the second time I've heard this term used. Where are you located...?

rocfighter - 3-4-2013 at 04:43 AM

Hey Mark I'm not homeless but I fit the bill!!:ticking::lol:

I think this thread may interesting today....don’t sell the trainer short, use it... start in nonukin winds w/ the 4line you don’t want to blow it up on hard impacts too quickly..although I have sacrificed a few to the wind gods, they make good bbq covers

There are 2 homeless guys that hang out in seaport village by downtown san diego. One 'works' for the kite store doing demos, the other one just hangs out there. I talked with the kite store and they said I could demo a kite so I talked with the bum that works for the store. He was helpful and let me fly a couple kites, a 2 and 3m. The other guy Tommy, was cooler and more helpful. They both have 5+ power kites in great condition. Tommy let me fly a 3M 2 line and a 5M 4 line (light wind). He liked the slingshot kites and pointed out things to look for like velcro blow outs / clean outs, bridle stitching, etc. That got me hooked and I tipped him $20 for the hour or so he taught me about kites and flying and he was stoked. I asked him "are you hear every day" and he said "where else would I go?" I picked it up pretty quick with my parachute experience, and like the brake lines on the 4 line. (you pretty much fly a 'chute off the brake lines 90% of the time). I uploaded a short video of me flying his 4 line. That is tommy on the left.
