Scamed

Thought I had seen a lot untilled this came up.
Got a check from a guy and after checking with his bank I was told it was good. Cashed it and used my bank card as ID and went on my merry way.
Fast forward 2 weeks and my bank tells me I am overdrawn big time. Seems the check bounced and they used my ID to get back their money. Now the great state of Georgia is a wonderful place to visit but my bank doesnt think it is good enough to open a branch here. Will have to take care of thing closer to the west coast, like next month.:flaming:

Can you elaborate on bolded part? Kind of curious, cause my mom got a small check from a settlement recently. Check the GPO and it's a valid case, but Spidey Senses have a low trigger threshold.

When I read that I assumed it was the bank that took the money out of his account since he cashed the check.

bigkid - 5-5-2013 at 07:03 PM

Sam, my guess is the money was in his account to show it was lajit and took the money out within seconds of my cashing it. Some banks don't record transaction until the following day.tt

I'm unable to make a visit to my bank or the other bank for a few more weeks so not real sure why, but I will change my second piece of ID to a one time use prepaid check card.
As I am not one to get even with a situation as this, I have been known to visit late at night.....
did I say that out loud? The items were not sent due to my grandsons lack of time away from soccer, which was a good thing. The sad part is the cost of the repercussions of the lost funds and overdrafts. Not worried about the bank stuff as a few phone calls should deal with all that. I hope.

Makes doing cash only seem a bit easier and more desirable. Now all I have to do is take a class on recognizing counterfeit bills so I dont get nailed with a bogus 100.00 bill.:o

Get a counterfeit pen. They are less than $10 and are almost a sure fire way to catch the fakes. They have never let a fake get through at the supermarket I work at.

What about the 'Bad Check Law'? I know all states are different, but California is below...are you planning on trying to recoop your loss?

"Definitions
The "drawer" is the person the check is from. The "payee" is the person the check is to. "Statutory penalty" is an amount three times the amount the check was written for (this amount must be at least $100, but won't exceed $1,500) minus any payments the drawer has already made.

Features
Once a payee determines a check has bounced, the drawer is expected to pay the amount the check was written for plus the service charges (up to $25 for one check, $35 for additional checks) and costs to request payment. The drawer has 30 days to do make payment. After this, the drawer will be required to pay the amount the check was written for plus the statutory penalty. If the drawer pays off a portion of the amount of the check but 30 days elapse before full payment is made, the statutory penalty is calculated on the remaining amount owed."

I'm not into that at this point, need to let the banks tack care of things when I get home.

So you cashed your customers check, then spend his money without shipping him his goods for over two weeks because your grandson (the shipper) is playing soccer?

I guess you came out ahead on the deal by not shipping the guy his products...but without getting any shipments/confirmations/tracking numbers for over two weeks...well that may also be the reason he stopped payment on the check or withdrew his cash from his account.

I just ordered a new video card for my computer, it has been three days without a shipping confirmation and I am starting to get a little peeved....I plan on contacting the company today and venting my frustration. If it was one weeks I would be filing a complaint on Paypal or contacting my Visa.....let alone two weeks without shipping. I don't know enough about the situation to blame your customer or to start making threats about showing up at his home but according to your posts, it may be possible that he may feel that he is the one being victimized here.......but that is just me.

Anyways, hope you get your issues sorted out with your customer, at least you got the upper hand on him by not taking care of his order on time.

I know they are not 100%. In one hasn't gotten through in the 10 years we have used them, or at least one that the bank could detect as a fake. In that case, the fake pretty much becomes currency.

Kent,
I cashed the check and the cash sat on my desk, I think it is still there.
As for the order going out on time, he requested it be picked up in a week as I had to order a part from Germany. So I placed a regular order and when his stuff came a few days after I left.........., well long story short, the order wasnt late. The part came after the letter from the bank.
If I would have had the part in stock, his order would have been sent out the day the check was cashed and I would be out the parts and the money. At this point I am out the bank charges and fees to clean it up, plus the shipping of the part from Germany and the cost of the part itself. I will sell the part in time but the point is I dont stock that as it is out of date and I dont need it.

My grandsons have 24 hours to ship orders, or they are charged a granpa fee. You think banks are bad, dont piss off granpa by making him do the work cause it will cost:mad:

Just a FYI there are many ways that people will scam you with personal checks, money orders and cashiers checks. My suggestion is not to accept checks unless you know the people. I have seen checks get sent back to the recipient after 14 days for insuficent funds, no account found, closed account, counterfiet, etc. For example I can get someone elses account number and a book of checks from staples and make checks in whomevers name I want and when the account number gets checked it comes up as good. Then gets returned later when the victim realizes money is missing. In many counties within WA State the prosecutors will not touch a case like this unless there is a loss of $1500.00 or more. I have heard that King County will not take the case unless the loss is 5-10K.

As for checking bills with the pen, that does not always work. The pens react to the lipids in the paper so if a $5.00 bill gets washed and changed to a $20 the pen will say it is good. The pens sometimes react to other papers as well. The easiest way I use to check bills is to use the tip of your fingernail and check the collar of the president for texture. You should feel your nail catch on the ridges. If there is multiple bills, check the serial numbers often the numbers are the same, crooks are lazy and typically will use the same copy or serial number of the bill they are copying or creating and make them all the same.

Anyway, Jeff if you want suggestions or to talk about it at JIBE feel free.
