big_d - 15-5-2013 at 10:54 AM

was going to go out for the first kite session of the year with my 3.5m trainer, bought it in sept

went to the park and chickened out, 35 k winds, but it was the gusts that were scaring me ha 60km/hr

since im still fairly new i figured i'd play it safe i guess u cant go wrong with that

You're not chicken...you're smart

Live to kite another day!

Sier_Pinski - 15-5-2013 at 10:59 AM

I'm confident to say that you made the right choice to chicken out. Those kinds of winds would have almost killed you with any kite. Just wait for a better day, and possibly pick a location that isn't as gusty.

Windy Heap - 15-5-2013 at 11:06 AM

We had a gusty rare wind storm, and I HAD to go to a school yard for a flight. 20 mph then 25-30 mph gusts.

I pulled out the baby New Tech 1.7 foil and man did it scream and carver up the sky at ludicrous speed..............right up until the 200 pound test line broke, at least it snapped only 3" up from the handles so the kite gods smiled upon me.........

brand new kite, maybe 4 flights on it, snap goes the 200# test line.

In that wind storm, no way I was going to pull out the 3.3 Soulfly.

whats a good next step up? to get into the water, what kinda/size kite should I look for? we can pretend money is not an issue at the moment

abkayak - 15-5-2013 at 11:10 AM

naaaah..that was the right move.....the trick is to kite many days/yr.....not one and done.

big_d - 15-5-2013 at 11:15 AM

yeah the book that came with the kite says for the wind speed very small kites and experience flyers

Assuming cost is not a concern, if you want to kitesurf in high gusty wind conditions, start off with a relatively small-sized user-friendly inflatable kite like the Slingshot Z or a water-relaunchable foil like the HQ Neo. Avoid the "C-kite" as your first water kite at all costs.

big_d - 15-5-2013 at 11:26 AM

lol too late for that i already bought a 6m c-kite not knowing anything about kiting a year ago for my first kite, sold it about 2 months later

markite - 15-5-2013 at 11:37 AM

yah it's windy out there. I was just washing some sand out of kites from JIBE and thinking man it would be a great buggy day sunny and windy or hitting the water.
Are you thinking of going to Cherry or Ashbridges beach to hit the water - keep in mind the water hasn't had a chance to warm up much unless you hit a shallow spot to learn like north of Sauble at Oliphant.

I wish man, all I have is a trainer, Im getting a new car tomorrow so all my money is going to that at the moment, but hopefully in a few weeks I will have something to ride in the water with

Better a live chicken, than a dead duck.

mougl - 15-5-2013 at 03:31 PM

You made a very wise decision!

hiaguy - 15-5-2013 at 04:46 PM

had an outside day (i don't get out much) in mid-town t.o. - gusts were crazy.
the only kite i'd have taken out is an 18" skynasaur that hasn't seen the light of day in more than 15 years.
with a little less wind, you're welcome to try out a couple of my 4-line foils (including the one that markite painstakingly pieced back together - thanks mark).

dirtslide - 15-5-2013 at 07:23 PM

Good choice , don't make your 1st session of the season become your last one.

MeatÐriver - 15-5-2013 at 07:33 PM

You're better off. Took the Snapshot out fairly recently in similar winds and i came out fine, but i don't think the kite was so lucky. Feeling REALLY dodgy since and has issues climbing. I'm thinking i handed those bridles a little more than they could handle. Did lay a couple nice 150ft+ tracks on the beach though. Having the chance to do it over again... I'd say no. Not worth it trash your equipment or your body IMO.

Michael Gaylan - 15-5-2013 at 07:59 PM

WOW that's not chicken, that's just safe. You could have very well become "gun shy" and been totally turned off altogether. In my first attempts at flying, there were a few "gusts" and eventually pulled me up and outward about 30-40 feet! Needless to say I was beaten up a little but kept going.

I have seen a few videos of people hitting the winds around 40-50 (guessing from the blowing stuff) and they couldn't have had a better time IMHO. But of course these guys were CRAZY.
