Has anyone tried a kite with lines that short? What adnvantage is there using long lines anyway?

Long lines give you a long power stroke - longer lines give you a longer power stroke but can build a delay into the turning response of the kite.
Long lines tend to get you into cleaner air but flying on a beach I'd say that could be negligible.
My guess is he is doing this to eliminate the power stroke and power surge so his daughter doesn't get injured. The kite is acting more like a sheet
or a sail capturing the wind as opposed to a kite you can "work" to take advantage of the wind, if that makes sense.

When the winds are over 30 mph I take out my nasa wings and fly them on the handles with no line or add 10 ft. of line. That way I have total control
of the kite in very strong wind and can buggy when some people can not because they do not have a kite small enough.

The kite spent as much time on the ground as it did in the air, could be expensive after awhile.

Long lines give you more/smoother power, easier to stay in the power when flying in light wind or underpowered. Takes longer to get the kite to
respond to imput though. Say you're heading right, it'll take a while for the kite to turn around and head off left before you get any real pull to
the left.
Short lines will give you way more response, quicker to change direction, way more pop for jumps. But a way smaller window, so if you're not on it you
could find yourself getting stuck with the kite at the edge of the window with no power.
Rule of thumb, small kites on shorter lines, your larger kites as you get to the bottom of your windrange should be on longer lines. Even if you're in
clean winds. My largest Century and Buster are both on fairly long lines.
